to tell you I've found the perfect sick bowl?

I have found the perfect bowl for incoming vomit!

Plastic - check
Deep/large enough to contain splash back but not so deep as to be unwieldy - check
Spout to easily empty - check
Dishwasher safe - check

Plus the handle on one side and the spout make it easy to hold support on a lap.

It's showing out of stock online but I got it in a store today.

I'm sure it's great for mixing too.

We have a folding one which lives under a bed. Fortunately we've not had to use it in a long time. It's that powder blue that inspires nausea just to look at, possibly a throwback to the sick bowl of my childhood which was also that shade of blue.

Tbf when that bowl comes out "just in case", it does definitely make you feel worse. Not for me, I haven't vomited since 1991 (prior to that was 1980ish, I'm not a puker) but when DS isn't well it makes me feel churned up in sympathy and the appearance of the bowl just ramps it up.

I can see the advantage in a handle and spout, wish I had prioritised that rather than the folding aspect.

(I've bookmarked some of these bowls as DH was having a little hissy fit as we've only one bowl of the ideal size for pizza dough, so makes sense to quietly get another)

WonderingWanda · 10/09/2023 13:55

Glad to see I'm not the only one thinking that the vomit bowl doesn't get used for food prep in between. Ours lives in the bathroom cupboard.

The sick bowl is the one your mum also mixes cakes in.

That's the rule. Don't @ me, I don't make them.

No one, not even my beloved children, will be coming anywhere near my lovely Mason and cash mixing bowl with their vomit.

A couple of glow in the dark stars from Amazon make it much easier to
find in a ‘middle of the night-going to throw NOW-lights are off’ emergency

User3735 · 10/09/2023 13:58

Nope, one of these is the best. Line it with a carrier bag and a piece of kitchen roll and you don't even have to tip anything out, just bin and re-line.

The big colourful garden tubs with handles work a treat and can be cleaned out easily in the shower.

menopausalmare · 10/09/2023 14:00

We use a Halloween bucket which has high sides and is small enough to fit in the bathroom cabinet.

Dishwasher safe. WTF🤢🤢

Put it in with the bin lids for a fuller load of gross things

Bunnycat101 · 10/09/2023 14:10

We just use a normal washing up bowl like this. Can’t get mixed up with food stuff and has a nice wide base which means the kids are less likely to miss. We use icecream boxes for the car as then they have a lid if it’s a little while before disposal can happen.

I have I've very similar. My friend thought it was hilarious when he was not feeling very well, and I presented him with the allocated pile bowl.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2023 14:23

Mine is not see through.

Toddlerteaplease · 10/09/2023 14:26

I was I'll at work once and made the mistake of nicking a few cardboard sick bowls. Realised that disposing of them without a macerator is actually a bit grim!

Yep, the same one we use!

SENlife · 10/09/2023 14:29

@Lwrenagain fellow HG warrior and I was immediately thinking the same has to be a metal bowl or the smell penetrates. Metal can be properly bleached

Taylorswiftserastour · 10/09/2023 14:30

We use a washing up bowl, like my parents before and probably their parents before them.

You don't want a see through sick bowl.

Sgtmajormummy · 10/09/2023 14:36

Dear God, this is bringing back traumatic 50yo+ memories of our sick bowl. It had a peeling base that I always aimed for and did double duty as the bowl DM hand washed “smalls” in.
For my kids I used DH’s razor rinsing bowl. But I’ll definitely get a grinning
Halloween bucket for any DGC. Just right to scare them witless in their febrile state!

Ringadinga · 10/09/2023 14:46

No to see through, no to plastic. I use a metal bowl from Wilko that I've had for 20+ years. I like something that I can disinfect properly. You can boil a metal bowl for ages to kill everything

DappledThings · 10/09/2023 14:46

The sick bowl is another concept MN introduced me to. I've never been or known anyone to be sick regularly enough that a specific receptacle is required.

Do people really have a set sick bowl in the house or is this a jokey trope I don't get?

Flakey99 · 10/09/2023 14:53

I use the small black plastic bucket that is inside a bathroom pedal bin. It’s deep enough and has a handle for carrying and easily empties down the toilet.

You can also easily stick it under the bathroom basin tap for filling up with water for rinsing down the loo.

I also use it to provide an extra flush when needed as my en-suite loo has a very narrow fill pipe and takes ages to refill between flushes.

Finally, it sits inside a small pedal bin when not being used, so no-one will ever guess that it’s your sick bucket and there’s zero chance it could be accidentally used for making cakes. 😎

@SENlife I'm sorry you suffered HG 💐

At least we know how to sick bowl though, unlike these amateurs on here 😂

(Sorry to anyone I just offended with my sickbowl hierarchy, I'm sure your plastic bowls are adequate 😁)

SENlife · 10/09/2023 14:57

@Lwrenagain 🤣🤣 im stupid enough to have done it 5 times

MotherEarthisaTerf · 10/09/2023 14:57

Well - I bought myself cardboard bedpans on Amazon and felt very smug throwing up into it when I was sick a couple of months ago. We have a bucket as well for griping into. But the cardboard one works great for the first nasty bout. It gets tipped down the loo and then thrown into the bin (general waste not recyling before anyone shouts at me!)

I'm fastidious about cleaning vomit and lately I've become too ill to clean up properly after myself when I'm sick. I couldn't bear to put something I've been sick into in the dishwasher!
