Shorts at a wedding

Holesinthewalls · 09/09/2023 12:47

Is it OK for a man to wear smart shorts to a wedding evening reception on a hot day? Unsure of the dress code but the venue is at a farm.

Yes-YANBU

Thanks!

I honestly couldn't tell you what anyone wore to my wedding, I've never analysed the photos enough but couldn't have cared less if someone had worn shorts, smart or otherwise.

Blinkinbloodyhayfever · 09/09/2023 13:44

No. A child yes, an adult man no. Shorts are great for casual wear, but for a formal occasion, absolutely not. My dh wouldn't even wear them in a British restaurant.

Tinybrother · 09/09/2023 13:44

Me neither, I would have noticed if someone wore eg a wetsuit and snorkel but completely normal clothes like shorts, no

Hummusanddipdip · 09/09/2023 13:44

I don't see why not, at a family wedding in July my cousins husband and their son arrived in matching shirts, tailored shorts and deck shoes, they looked so smart and adorable!

It's too hot to be uncomfortable!!!!

good one

The wedding is on a farm. Anything up from dungarees is a fashion statement.

Precipice · 09/09/2023 14:02

Would having bare shins really make much of a difference to body temperature?

Yes! I was at a conference in Israel, where it was 30-odd degrees out. I had full-length linen trousers (not the thin kind, the half-lined smart trouser type). The venue itself was running aircon, but I had to walk to a bus stop and wait for a bus, etc, then walk from the stop to the venue. I tell you, it was such a relief to roll the leg up even to mid-calf; it really made me feel a lot better.

ActDottie · 09/09/2023 14:19

Yes definitely if they’re smart tailored ones :)

I think the key words here are 'farm' and 'evening'. If your husband wants his legs bitten away by midges then go ahead. Personally I doubt it will be that warm by evening and that he would be better off in light weight trousers.

GreyCarpet · 09/09/2023 14:21

I'd rather guests were comfortable tbh. I can't imagine even being bothered by this.

Shorts at a farm in the evening? Good luck with that 😂

I entirely agree!😂

DeltaAlphaDelta79 · 09/09/2023 14:23

I did and would again. I would even wear smart chino/tailored type shorts to the ceremony in this weather. Matched with a shirt and appropriate footwear. I wouldnt be going anywhere that required a suit in this weather.

I think your outfit sounds great and suitable for day time. The OP has said this in the evening on a farm. At that time of day, on a farm, I'd rather have my legs covered than risk being eaten by midges.

Fair enough. It might depend if its a working farm or not, but I practically live in shorts this time of year, so would probably invest in some decent midge repellent.

Zanatdy · 09/09/2023 14:42

Evening do at a farm I’d say it’s fine, but wear some insect repellent

I've nothing against shorts in the right environment. I tend to have a few pairs of trousers with zip off lower legs so I can cover up a bit more in the later evening without having to get changed!

Honeychickpea · 09/09/2023 14:45

I think smart shorts is up there with smart trainers as an impossibility.

Good thinking. I have never found any I've liked that weren't cargo type trousers, but wouldn't rule them out.

Kissmas · 09/09/2023 14:47

"I work in this industry and several weddings in this weeks heat, not one person in shorts, not even the kids. Night do, possibly, daytime no."

🤣 as if. Mine always wear shorts to weddings

purser25 · 09/09/2023 14:47

Wear trousers and take some shorts to change into if you feel it is appropriate

Megifer · 09/09/2023 14:56

They're fine, its 2023 and you're going to an actual wedding not a made up Mumsnet one where no one can wear a square cm of white, or pastel colours as that can be mistaken for white from a distance, or red, or black, or green I believe, or anything with white polkadot, and can't be too floaty/tight/long/short and no shoulders/cleavage/bare arms.. No crazy coloured hair either.

Decent looking shorts in million degree heat at a farm wedding are of course fine.

Tinybrother · 09/09/2023 15:27

The women will likely be wearing dresses, so plenty of people will be taking insect bites into account, that’s not a reason not to wear shorts if overall you’re more comfortable.

thedevilinablackdress · 09/09/2023 15:47

@Megifer I support your post 100%
👏

Flakey99 · 09/09/2023 15:58

Wear whatever you want to. It's just an extravagant party after all.

KatherineJaneway · 09/09/2023 16:07

Definite no.
