To throw away chicken three days after its Use By date?

Rollingdownland · 06/09/2023 17:40

I have some 'chicken flatties' (ie breasts beaten thin) from M&S in a BBQ glaze. Planned to eat them tonight, just saw they are Use By September 3. Three days ago.

I can only smell the BBQ sauce when I sniff them. I hate wasting food but don't really want to make my family ill.

Would I BU if I chucked them away?

Throw them!! 3 day out of day chicken is reeeeeally pushing it

OldEvilOwl · 06/09/2023 18:01

Throw!! Not worth the risk

Moveoverdarlin · 06/09/2023 18:03

Chicken and fish I wouldn’t risk it with. Especially if they’re covered in a sauce, it could mask any nasty whiffs.

MummyDummyNow · 06/09/2023 18:03

I'd cook and eat them.

Dartmoorcheffy · 06/09/2023 18:04

If it didn't have a sauce on it and smelt ok I would cook and eat but the sauce will.mask the off smell so I wouldn't risk it and I'm pretty laid back with dates

GreekDogRescue · 06/09/2023 18:04

You need to sniff them before throwing them out.
At least leave them out for the foxes otherwise animals have died in vain.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 06/09/2023 18:05

I find I can normally give M&S chicken 4 days after it's use by. I'd eat it, I'd cook it really well first though.

Growlybear83 · 06/09/2023 18:06

Nothing would persuade me to eat chicken that was past it's use by date.

lovemycbf · 06/09/2023 18:10

If it was me in no way would I eat them
Is food poisoning worth the cost of the pack of chicken ?

jallopeno · 06/09/2023 18:11

You'd be unreasonable not to bin them

DO NOT DO THIS

Clymene · 06/09/2023 18:12

I'd eat it. Off chicken stinks.

fancyfrogs · 06/09/2023 18:16

Chuck them 🤢

ThreeLittleDots · 06/09/2023 18:16

Chuck it away.

The sniff test is bollocks anyway.

Pathogenic bacteria doesn't smell, spoilage bacteria does.

BMW6 · 06/09/2023 18:24

I'm very laid back about use by dates, but NOT involving chicken.

I'd bin 100%

This!! Dear god no! Just bin it, not worth the risk 🤢

Chuck it away.

Pathogenic bacteria doesn't smell, spoilage bacteria does.

But there's no more likelihood that pathogenic bacteria is in old chicken than fresh chicken.

M&S chicken = unlikely to have pathogens. Being past sell by date makes no difference.

Off chicken looks, smells and feels bad.

Letitgonowgr · 06/09/2023 18:43

I can’t even eat chicken on the day it goes out of date… worries me and I can’t enjoy it so no way on earth would I do this!

lap90 · 06/09/2023 18:45

I would cook them and eat them.

Clymene · 06/09/2023 18:45

Supermarket meat has a massively long use by date because they err on the side of caution. They have to allow for people who go to the shop and carry the stuff home on a hot bus for half an hour.

5 days I would absolutely say outside the tolerance zone. 3 days would be my limit. I've never been ill by following this but it's 15 minutes from shop to fridge for me.

There are other factors to be taken into consideration

Heronwatcher · 06/09/2023 18:45

I once got food poisoning from chicken and it was horrendous. No way would I risk it for the sake of a fiver.

Papillon23 · 06/09/2023 18:47

I'm fairly relaxed about use by but chicken 2 days after would be my limit I think, especially in a sauce

Shoxfordian · 06/09/2023 18:59

Chuck them out
