To think it’s not normal to have thick grey dust on skirting boards?

Went around to SIL house today and I’m by no means a neat freak but just thought it was unacceptably dirty. Not cluttered, just nothing was cleaned. For example her skirting boards had thick grey dust on them, on top and falling down like snow. Paw marks on them from the rabbits as well so it was so obvious. And the hair that had built up on them too was visible and a bit gross.

AIBU to think you should regularly clean and dust your house if you are inviting others into it?

Rabbits INSIDE a house ?

House rabbit.
They need the house to be rabbit proof - no wires on show so the host must have done some rabbit proofing at some point ie not completely blind to the state of their home.

GosPort · 06/09/2023 17:53

Agreed. Dead skin cells, fecal matter, hair, toe nail clippings! 🤢 That’s what makes up dust everyone. It’s not hygienic stuff.

I'm pretty on it with dusting, but I really wouldn't give a shit about this. I'm not eating off the skirting boards

You said the house had dust and hair, not bathrooms caked I'm faeces?

stayathomer · 06/09/2023 17:56

What a weird attitude. How can someone expect guests to go into a house (when invited) with toilets caked in feaces and dust everywhere? Health hazard! 😷 😷
Where did caked in faeces cone from?

whathappenedtosummer23 · 06/09/2023 17:56

I actually agree with you.

sorry I tried quoting the the quote didn’t show. Somebody said they never cleaned their bathroom so it must be covered in what is made in that room!

Thank you. No need to live in a mess.

Wow - thought this was the one place I wouldn’t be greeted with this kind of response.

Could never live in a grotty and grimey house! How do you never clean your bathroom? That’s a room literally full of s*!

You have obviously hit a 'nerve' with some people (the ones with dusty skirting boards) 😀

I am not fastidious about housework (can go weeks without doing a proper clean - apart from the kitchen and toilet) but I do hoover my skirting boards when hoovering the floor - it takes seconds.

I know a couple of people (one a relative) who simply don't clean their houses and they are pretty grimy. Not a way I would choose to live - but each to their own.

topshotta · 06/09/2023 18:05

YANBU this is grim

There's a difference between dusty skirting boards and a toilet full of shit. You only mentioned skirting boards in your op. I would be embarrassed if a guest visited my loo and it was in a mess, obviously.

You do sound very judgey though. I suspect you and your SIL don't like each other much.

TheYearOfSmallThings · 06/09/2023 18:08

You're not wrong but...you should never turn up unannounced at my house.

Also it wouldn't bother me in someone else's house, especially if they had rabbits hopping around.

Evaka · 06/09/2023 18:10

Fecal matter only makes up dust if you're shitting on the floor babe. Toilets do a smashing job generally. As for toenail clippings, dead skin cells etc. They're not inherently pathogenic or dirty. They live safely on our bodies after all! Anyhow, this thread seems to be way more about you beefing on your sister in law.

CupOfCoffeePlease · 06/09/2023 18:11

Um is that not normal for skirting boards?!
No idea when (if) I last looked at ours. Possibly when we last painted...

Lilithlogic · 06/09/2023 18:12

I do try to keep on top of dust. Dust and crumbs are my nemisis

Chippy4me · 06/09/2023 18:13

YABU
If you don’t like it then don’t go there.

I am someone who keeps my home reasonably clean, as I have pets and so I need to hoover and mop much more frequently.

But sometimes if I am ill either physically or mentally or something has happened then the cleaning is the first thing that gets dropped.

I know when I had depression it was just about getting through the day, I couldn’t give a shit if my skirting boards were dirty as that was the least of my problems.

When I got covid I was also out of action for a few days and just did the bare minimum that I needed to do like feeding my DD, doing the laundry etc which was exhausting. I couldn’t have dusted or hoovered.

You didn't say anything about health hazards or the toilet being 'caked in faeces' in your original post. That's a bit different to dust on skirting boards. I would be worried about her welfare if it's that bad. So how bad actually is it?

Hippopotaperson · 06/09/2023 18:14

How many adults live in the house? Why is this a SIL issue?

Chippy4me · 06/09/2023 18:14

I absolutely agree with the posters that have said it sounds like you just have an issue with your SIL.

Perhaps you are very jealous of her.

CorylusAgain · 06/09/2023 18:16

Why on earth did you think MN would only have posters who are house proud and judgy?

You are absolutely NBU to dislike dust and choose to keep your home dust free and pristine.

But to judge people who live differently makes me really uncomfortable. It suggests cleanliness means more to you than relationships. And that's sad.

If you were an asthma sufferer and were looking for a tactful way to broach the subject, fair enough. But simply judging is unpleasant.

Whatswhatwhichiswhich · 06/09/2023 18:17

Unless you’re the queen (and you’re not, she’s dead), you shouldn’t be expecting anyone to clean for your visit. You sound rather nasty tbh.

Godofwar · 06/09/2023 18:18

I think it’s gross as well OP. Who would want to relax in an environment where people’s skin cells are visible and floating around 🤢

It’s completely unhygienic.

BMW6 · 06/09/2023 18:19

Isn't this what hoover attachments are made for?

I'm too old and fat to bend down that far so use the hoover brush thing on the skirting boards once a month or so.

Also great for sucking up cobwebs, doing light fittings, window blinds.

bellsbuss · 06/09/2023 18:21

That's grim

Beseen22 · 06/09/2023 18:21

The more modern square edge skirting boards covered in gloss paint attract dust more easily than the older fashioned rounded edge ones. I do my downstairs ones every day when I'm hoovering and every day there is a visible layer of dust on them.
