To wonder if mums of BF toddlers could make ice lollies out of breast milk, in this weather?

Just that, really - keep them cool, feed them, give them something to do, get yourself five grab-free minutes to fan yourself …

I did it for both of mine before weaning- I'd say about 4/5 months. Was such a help for them during the warm weather and for teething.

Yes I used to do this for my baby when she was sitting in the high chair in the garden on sunny days! She loved them.

It’s not “try hard” or a faff at all, what strange snobbery?!
Babies get hot, they like breast milk, it’s good for them and it comes out your boobs for free, why not lob a bit in a lolly mould? Literally a cheap and easy way to give your baby a treat.

Someone tried to make cheese out of breastmilk once. It was a funny read.

They concluded after a ton of milk used, that it's not possible.

Hufflepods · 06/09/2023 17:53

@Thementalloadisreal a baby isn’t a toddler though.

I breastfed for 3 plus years and don't know why you would go to the effort of expressing to make ice lollies for a toddler. BF when they / you want and bung them a normal ice lolly.

doroda · 06/09/2023 18:17

Never thought of this! Genius if you can express easily

TheNameIsDickDarlington · 06/09/2023 18:46

I had a huge over supply with ds1 and often made the breastmilk lollies.

If you don't have a mold you can use a baby yoghurt pot and a little baby spoon. Keep the spoon stood up in the pot using an elastic band or hair band.

It's really not a faff at all, if you're expressing already or using a hakka pump on the other breast while you feed.

Ds absolutely loved them.

CottageBearskin · 06/09/2023 19:55

Yeah, but then you'd have to pump. Hell no from me! Feels like it defeats one of the big bonuses of BF... Ease of use!

Riapia · 06/09/2023 19:57

Sounds a bit like a fetish.

Girasoli · 06/09/2023 20:01

A toddler is over one aren't they? I would just make them out of yoghurt or fruit puree by that age (never got round to learning how to pump.)

Well there seems to be a bit of a divide but we found it useful as someone else said I had a good/over supply, mine have been crap taking a bottle so we found it useful for fluid intake on a hot day if I was out/busy, for teething and participating in having a lolly with the family prior to weaning or in the early weaning days. I wouldn’t give a processed ice lolly to an under 2 personally.
weird how some of you are saying they can have a normal one made of milk or make one out of yoghurt… milk from another species, but think it’s odd to make them one out of human milk designed for them.

Yes people's reactions to breast milk is odd, I've also noticed that. I had many people ask me when my son could have "Normal milk" I'd always reply "you mean Cows Milk, breast milk is normal milk for human children, cow milk is normal milk for baby cows... but when he's over 1 he can have cow milk" or something similar.

I'm also surprised at how many people think it sounds like a faff, it was much easier than walking to the shop to buy mini milks and I assume healthier as, like you said, breast milk is designed for them.
