to not sponsor pathetic charity efforts?!

My cousin and his wife are currently all over social media asking for sponsorship for a charity walk they're doing. Really going on about it. But i's less than two paltry miles they're walking! Not like they're tackling the three peaks in 24 hours or something. They'd walk more wandering round big Tesco fgs. I'd rather they just asked people to bung the charity some money for no reason other than they support it rather than pretend this walk is anything other than a little wander round a park.

Go on, tell me I'm a miserable bastard.

It's still 2 miles more than you are doing to support a charity of your choice? Donate or don't donate, but please don't shame people who try to do however much they can do to support a charity!

grayhairdontcare · 06/09/2023 17:22

@Miserablebastard I agree with you completely.
Have they actually managed to get any sponsors?

ConsuelaHammock · 06/09/2023 17:24

I agree with you. I wouldn’t sponsor someone to go on a jolly around another country either eg cycle India etc. Walk the greet walk of China.

Phos · 06/09/2023 17:54

I agree. Sponsorship should be for something that requires real effort. There's a lot of fundraising fatigue at the moment so I'll be surprised if they get much!

Gremlins101 · 06/09/2023 17:56

I agree but throw them a fiver for a peaceful life. Then, do a marathon or something to show them up.

Pottedpalm · 06/09/2023 17:59

I no longer sponsor people doing something of no benefit to anyone, or just of benefit to themselves.
Wash cars, pack bags, donate your hair- fine, but the money goes to charity, not to fund your trip to South America.
Walk, swim, etc -no.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 06/09/2023 18:03

2 miles isn't even a walk, they're going on a charity stroll

Moveoverdarlin · 06/09/2023 18:04

Totally agree with you OP.

Lottapianos · 06/09/2023 18:07

Well I'm a miserable git as well then. A friend of mine did one of these sponsored walks for Cancer Research a few years ago. Went on about getting into training for it before the big day. It was three miles long! And she stopped for a fag half way round 🤦🏻‍♂️

dizzydizzydizzy · 06/09/2023 18:14

A friend of mine signed herself up for a 13 mile walk. After several weeks of training she excitedly told me she has got up to a mile. I guess 2 miles is a lot for some people.

CreeperBoom · 06/09/2023 18:16

It depends. I'd sponsor someone doing a 2 mile stroll for a charity they are passionate about before I would sponsor someone running a marathon because they want to, and need a charity sponsorship to get a place.

(I say that as someone who has run a marathon. I ran because I wanted to, and didn't expect anyone else to pay for my place).

😂😂😂

KohlaParasaurus · 06/09/2023 18:22

There are people I'd sponsor to walk two miles because it's a significant challenge for that person and I don't mind donating to that charity. There are other people I wouldn't sponsor to run a marathon because they do loads of marathons and it's well within their comfort zone.

HoliHormonalTigerLillyTheSecond · 06/09/2023 18:23

🙄

fairyfluf · 06/09/2023 18:24

Is the 2 miles a challenge for them? Or will it be a breeze

KnickerlessParsons · 06/09/2023 18:40

You're donating to charity. It doesn't matter if they walk 1 mile or 100 miles.
If you don't like the charity don't donate. But if you do, do.
It's not the effort that matters - that's just to bring attention to a worthy cause. It's the donation that counts.

RaininSummer · 06/09/2023 18:40

I never sponsor people doing either pointless things or things which are really for them. Do something useful and I will think about it. Two bloody miles is hilarious. Perhaps I can get sponsored to sit on my sofa for two hours and eat crisps for charity .

caringcarer · 06/09/2023 18:54

I'd laugh at them tbh. My 17 year old just did the 100 challenge to support disabled cricket players. You had to do 100 of something in one week. He did 100 pushups, swam 100 lengths and walked 100,000 steps. He also used the rowing machine but DH took so long getting it out for him he only had 1 1/2 days left but still managed 17 kms. He had planned on doing 100 km if he'd had the full week.

Can it be 100 of anything? Sleep for 100 minutes? Breathe 100 times? Eat 100 Rolos?!

Elvis1956 · 06/09/2023 19:10

Fully agree with you that about the things for them. I've been keeping an eye on a local charity. Lots of things on fb and the web site about raising money very very little about services they provide. The real startling thing is that they spent 90%+ of the money they raised on raising that money!

That's amazing achievement!

SnuggleBuggleBoo · 06/09/2023 19:18

Sponsorship is ridiculous. If it's a charity you care about you'll donate anyway. Why pay for something you not interested in because your friend are? Weird.

virtue signalling maybe? Look at me, I'm doing something for charity?
I walk 2 miles to work each day and 2 miles back...

Yes, this is the one that really annoys me. When people want sponsorship for what is basically a fun and exciting trip for them.

Prescottdanni123 · 06/09/2023 20:29

I'm guessing there is no health conditions either are currently suffering that would make walking two miles a challenge?
