What's the most petty thing a home owner has taken with them?

We completed on our house yesterday. Sellers have been a nightmare, very difficult and tried to increase price by £12k the day before exchange. So we knew they'd probably screw us over and we haven't been disappointed. Lightbulbs, toilet roll holders, some handles from cupboards etc... but the most petty thing has to be the clock. They had one of those god awful clocks where you stick the numbers to the wall then screw in/add the arms. They've left the numbers, but removed the arms and taken them with them!

No, they're very functional. In summer the sun comes up about 4am and it's very hard to sleep past that with no way of hanging curtains in any of the rooms. If people remove poles they should at least fill holes, repaint and fit basic tracks... though so many curtains are eyelet these days that even that is not much good.

The starting point with F&F used to be that anything that would stay attached if you turned the house upside down and shook it would be included.

Yeah so surely the curtain poles would fall if u turned the house upside and shook?

maddiemookins16mum · 05/09/2023 20:19

The shed. It was a lovely shed, new. When we moved in, they’d replaced it with a shitty, old one.

OrigamiOwls · 05/09/2023 20:20

The previous resident took the spare room light bulb - wouldn't have been such an issue if they hadn't, for reasons still unknown to us, fitted an industrial light fitting in there which you couldn't buy bulbs for off the shelf.

ŁadnaPogoda · 05/09/2023 20:20

We didn’t want to pay the extortionate price the last owner was charging for the curtains. He took one from each window. He lives upstairs from us and is still madder than a box of frogs.

Ladyoftheknight · 05/09/2023 20:20

Our current house- lightbulbs, socket covers, light switches, door handles, cabinet handles, shelves in the built-in wardrobes, shelves from the pantry, a basin and the lino from the utility room.

It didn't matter much to us as we were ripping out his awful blue kitchen and re-doing everything but we paid 7 figures, and he was down-sizing to a new build bungalow-he didn't need any of it!

Entire bathroom suite and kitchen

Of course they wouldn’t? They’re drilled into the wall aren’t they?

IClaudine · 05/09/2023 20:21

I am never ever moving. Why are people such arseholes?

Our curtain poles are attached to the wall... we have got magical hovering ones yet.

Procrastinatingbecauseithelps · 05/09/2023 20:22

The fitted wardrobes…

TheSkull · 05/09/2023 20:22

The stair carpet. They were moving to a bungalow.

fgswhywouldIdothat · 05/09/2023 20:23

It's what they left. The ancient kitchen cupboards were full of ancient food. We could have opened some kind of 1960s themed museum of old tinned food brands.

Purplefoalfoot · 05/09/2023 20:23

Curtain poles and those screw in doorstops! Madness.

LadyGaGasPokerFace · 05/09/2023 20:23

If you know where they’ve moved to, rip off the numbers and dump them in the doorstep with a note saying ‘you forgot this’. But I’m petty too 😳

SloraceHughorn · 05/09/2023 20:23

Previous tenants of the family home I grew up in took all the light bulbs, curtain rails, loo roll holder middle bit (left the bit attached to the wall) aaaaand the secondary glazing, which they later tried selling back to my mum.

Mum said they'd clearly tried removing the metal frames the glazing went into but hadn't been able to.

My mum felt really gutted because she'd made sure every light fitting had a working bulb in the house we'd left.

No, the bracket that holds them is screwed to the wall. The pole just sits on top of the bracket things?

Loadedbydeath · 05/09/2023 20:28

Shelves from off the kid's bedroom wall. Plus several chunks of lime plaster which needed specialist repair...

chickbean · 05/09/2023 20:29

We accidentally took the bell for the doorbell with us! It had just been sitting on the mantlepiece, because we never got around to putting it on the wall. When we got the boxes out of storage six months later we found that the removal men had packed it.

I really don't think it is petty to take things that belong to you.
If it is on the included fixture and fittings list then you are including them in the sale.
I certainly won't be throwing in my chosen light fittings and curtain poles when I move.

Hands up if you missed the point of the thread….

scoobydoo1971 · 05/09/2023 20:29

My first flat purchase was a rather beaten up London flat. The previous owner tore out the gas cooker and took it with him...only he failed to cap off the gas pipe or switch off the gas supply. By the time I arrived with keys an hour later, I was fortunate enough to smell the gas. If I had switched on the electric lights, I could have taken the whole block out...gas safety engineer was appalled when he turned up.

tillytoodles1 · 05/09/2023 20:30

An acquaintance of mine thought he was being clever when he dismantled his conservatory and sold it as he was moving abroad. He left the radiator on the outside wall.

Littlewhitecat · 05/09/2023 20:31

Curtain hooks from every single curtain track in the house. They must have just slid the curtains off and left the hooks attached. Cost a fortune to replace them all and I can't imagine they were able to use them in their new house as they were very specific to the type of track. They wanted to come back and dig up two plants from the garden and i refused to let them.

Lizzieregina · 05/09/2023 20:31

Thankfully they can’t do that where I live! You get to inspect the home AFTER they’ve moved their stuff out and before you sign the paperwork. Also, all the money isn’t disbursed right away, so if they did take something, you could bring it up at the signing and the money could be held while you worked it out.

Taking all the light bulbs is petty. Here, the door handles on the cupboards would convey with the house, so they wouldn’t get away with that. Sounds like you won’t miss the ugly clock!

Erm are you sure you fitted them right?

Every pole I've ever fitted has screws securing the pole to the bracket.

All internal doors. Not me but someone I know!
