What's the most petty thing a home owner has taken with them?

We completed on our house yesterday. Sellers have been a nightmare, very difficult and tried to increase price by £12k the day before exchange. So we knew they'd probably screw us over and we haven't been disappointed. Lightbulbs, toilet roll holders, some handles from cupboards etc... but the most petty thing has to be the clock. They had one of those god awful clocks where you stick the numbers to the wall then screw in/add the arms. They've left the numbers, but removed the arms and taken them with them!

Left the house in a state, left cat litter boxes over flowing, garage full of empty paint cans, broken tiles, mowers, tires and litres and litres of dirty car oil.

They took the shelves from fridge, including the crisper drawer and egg cups. The oven racks and cooker hood. They also took the solid oak bannister!

We were doing a complete renovation project but needed to live in it first for a year and we moved in when my eldest was a year old.

Greenwitchhorse · 05/09/2023 18:53

Mine were the opposite...

The elderly couple I bough the house from left stuff everywhere that I then had to get rid of (as most of it was really old fashioned & not in great condition): curtains, curtain poles, chairs, wardrobes, large mirror, beside tables, chest of drawers, a table in the garden, random shelves, lampshades...they just could not be bothered to dispose of it. And also a bunch of old paint in the shed...

I only kept a couple of chairs and the table that was left in the garden which I then painted with chalk paint.

Frankly it was a pain to dismantle and get rid of everything, so I would have rather had an empty house with no light bulbs!

AnIntrovert · 05/09/2023 18:53

The fire alarm batteries.

Greenwitchhorse · 05/09/2023 18:53

I forgot the old washing machine and dishwasher...left too.

thefirstmrsrochester · 05/09/2023 18:55

yorkshire stone paved garden path and two of the original internal doors - victorian house. Left 2 cheap plywood doors in the garage as ‘replacements’ and nowt but mud where the path used to be.

our seller was going into a modern flat as well, but had been difficult as fuck to deal with upto and beyond exchange so we just had to let it go.

I really don't think it is petty to take things that belong to you.
If it is on the included fixture and fittings list then you are including them in the sale.
I certainly won't be throwing in my chosen light fittings and curtain poles when I move.

Yep, you’re meant to replace it with a standard fitting, like the one that costs 3 quid or so. You can’t leave bare wires.

WhatTheFridge · 05/09/2023 18:59

Ive got another ‘left’ as opposed to ‘taken’

12 large koi carp and a whole load of random crap throughout the house, including several topless photos of them found in the loft (they were in their 80s when the sold the property to us and not much younger in the photos 😖)

FlibbertyGibbitt · 05/09/2023 18:59
  1. lightbulbs
  2. carpets
  3. fitted wardrobes

left loads of dog shit in the garden though

Actually another “left behind” thing. An ancient cockerel. Alive. They refused to collect and this is pre- internet so not easy to rehome. In the end my retired farmer GF came over and dispatched it.

Edited

When you say "dispatched," please tell me he rehomed it not what i think you mean😒

Was watching some low rent TV the other day. Landlord had evicted his tenants and just got the house back. Along with the kitchen white goods, they'd taken the light fittings, the electrical sockets, the laminate flooring and skirting boards and THE TURF FROM THE LAWN.

MrJeremyFisher · 05/09/2023 19:10

The in-home display thing for the smart meter. Useless to them.

The house sign, very specific house name. Also useless to them unless they were moving to a house with exactly the same view. Highly unlikely.

A bit of plumbing from under the kitchen sink, which meant I couldn't use the sink until I could get a plumber out to the middle of nowhere.

Arseholes.

Soupsetscared · 05/09/2023 19:11

Ours left over 300 garden ornaments and 27 birdboxes.

Plus the filfiest kitchen and bathroom.

HowAmYa · 05/09/2023 19:16

Just coming on here to say when I one day sell my house, I'm digging up my David Austin Rose bushes because I raised them for MY eyes only😂

VerityRoss · 05/09/2023 19:18

They requested a month between exchange and completion and left the house in the filithiest state. It was disgusting mouldly fitted fridge and freezer filthy kitchen cupboards. Took all the light bulbs and some the glass bits from four wall up lighters. The metal fittings were left behind but no glass shades. It was such a pain trying to track down the manufacturer and ask them to only supply the glass shades. Took me months. The seller emailed a few months later to ask for something and I took great pleasure in telling her to shove it.

FatherJackHackettsUnderpantsHamper · 05/09/2023 19:19

I think it’s fine to take expensive light fittings but I would always replace with a basic light fitting and light bulb. Not just leave the wiring.

Yes, when we last sold, the fixtures & fittings form stated that you had to leave them functioning. By all means take your antique gold-plated pewter switches with you, but you have to at least replace them with cheap plastic functional ones from Home Bargains or wherever.

Fucksakekids · 05/09/2023 19:22

The plug for the bath. Not on the same level of others on the thread, but bloody annoying once I realised one evening really fancying a bath!

Oliotya · 05/09/2023 19:25

Showerhead.
Managed to leave loads of shit behind though.

ShowOfHands · 05/09/2023 19:25

I've already planned when I move that I will take the toilet and sinks with me. I have bought basic basic white replacements already so won't leave them without but I'm rather attached to my toilet!

scarceiron · 05/09/2023 19:27

Shelves!! Just left with a load of holes instead…

The washing machine waste pipe. Due to the position of the machine, replacing it involved removing kitchen cabinets!

This happened to me too! It was my first house so I had no idea the waste pipe was meant to stay there, I assumed they came with the washing machine. Had a lovely washing machine ornament in the middle of my kitchen whilst waiting for a plumber to come sort it, and AO refused to refund me the money I’d paid for fitting.

Yes it is it's massively petty.
How could a curtain pole mean so much to you that you could be bothered to take it down and move with it.

year12clueless · 05/09/2023 19:33

They had fitted disgusting metal louvered blinds (like you'd find in a cheap office block in the 1980s) in a maroon colour to all the Victorian sash windows. The metal slats were all bent and the blinds failed in their basic task of keeping out light.

Still, they asked for £200 for them. We decided we'd be happier with £200 and no horrible blinds.

When we moved in they'd left the blinds BUT removed all the long control wand things that you twist to open and close the blinds, so we were stuck with them in the random positions they'd set until we got more just so we could see what we were doing.
Nasty move.

housethatbuiltme · 05/09/2023 19:35

My friend did a council house swap and despite the fact the contract agreed to leave x, y and z but the other lady completely GUTTED the house.

My friend left all the agreed things behind (including curtains/blinds as it was in the contract) to get to a house where they had taken not just the blinds but the carpets, fireplace, toilet seat, kitchen cupboard doors, light fixtures etc... Basically the left a completely empty shell.

Honestly it seemed completely petty as the carpets wouldn't have even fitted in the new house etc...

Council didn't care and nothing came of it, friend had to re-buy replacements of everything.

Tulipvase · 05/09/2023 19:35

I don’t know if they intentionally took it but the plug was missing from the kitchen sink, and it’s a German design so I had to order one.

ThinkingAgainAndAgain · 05/09/2023 19:37

The big bin and recycling crates. They were moving within the borough, they said, so would need them in their new house. Surely the people they’re buying from would have left them there?
