To ask how on earth you poo with a menstrual cup

Without it being pushed out into the loo???

I swear I’m not the poo troll, I predate Penis Beaker.

I am on holidays and due to an absolute cracker of a brain fart totally forgot to bring my period kit with me.

I went to the pharmacy and bought a Mooncup. Whilst it was boiling I read the instructions and it said that you didn’t need to remove it to pee or poo.

I always remove it before I poo because the same muscles used to poo are the ones that also contract the vagina. Anyone who has given birth vaginally will have been told to “push like you’re trying to poo”.

I am genuinely perplexed. Have I not been pooing correctly my entire life? I tried to poo with it in but had to literally hold it in place!

YABU - You just can’t poo properly
YANBU - I take mine out to poo

My cup sits quite high up, so doesn't really budge much. Surely if its coming out when you are pooping, it's also likely to come out when coughing or sneezing or whatever too?

It doesn’t budge at all when I cough or sneeze but I can feel it moving when I poo 😂

I can't poo with a tampon in, it pushes it out!! (Or pushes it down to the vaginal entrance so it's too uncomfortable to keep in)

Am I pooing wrong too???

Yep me too, in fact I posted on here years ago about it and a lot of people were in agreement with me

Secondhandemotion · 05/09/2023 16:06

I have this issue too and I don't even strain to poo.

I would always remove a tampon or cup before I start for that reason. It doesn't exactly come out, just moves down a bit and I find it more uncomfortable to try to push it back up than to do it all fresh.

However, I also take mine out to wee! I definitely don't push wee out but it slips down a bit when I relax my muscles to wee. I didn't have any significant birth injury and everything felt pretty much the same. Never had any continence issues after birth. I'm worried that I'm abnormal now!

Secondhandemotion · 05/09/2023 16:07

Doesn't move when I sneeze or cough either. Only when going to the toilet.

Same same!

RudsyFarmer · 05/09/2023 16:09

If I’m on my heaviest day with my period having a poo will partially push it out so I just take it out. Otherwise it’s fine.

Thank you @Humidititties I was starting to get a little alarmed!! 😁

Glad we're not the only tampon repellers out there x

TaigaSno · 05/09/2023 16:11

I'd suggest you may be pooing wrong 🤭
(a phrase I never thought I'd write to a total stranger).
Try clenching/relaxing your anal muscles, then try doing the same with your vaginal muscles. If they both react both times that's wrong, you should be able to control the muscles separately. Just as you should also be able to control your bowel and bladder separately.

I did have trouble pooing with a mooncup in for a while but that was because my pelvic floor was collapsing and everything was squashed down together. If that's the case for you, it's definitely worth working on it!

Theroom · 05/09/2023 16:12

I remove mine as it does slip. BUT I haven't replaced mine post-birth, so it's a bit too small for me really. I didn't used to.

Do you definitely have the right size? They come in different sizes and some sizes and shapes suit better than others.

I imagine it's more of an issue for people with naturally low cervixes too 🤷

NeverDropYourMooncup · 05/09/2023 16:12

You're describing the symptoms of a rectocoele. The rectum is prolapsed into the vagina when loaded and stool is pushing from above the mooncup instead of exiting in a direct fashion.

ChiefWiggumsBoy · 05/09/2023 16:14

Mine slips out in a way tampon would as well when I poo. I'm definitely not straining when I have a period poo!

I think it's because I have no pelvic floor muscles, I really should do some kegels.

Theredfoxfliesatmidnight · 05/09/2023 16:18

We definitely need a thread on the right way to poo

FlutteryButterfly · 05/09/2023 16:21

Yes this happens to me and if o don't take a tampon out of will either pop out or partially exit. This was also the case pre children.

duffed · 05/09/2023 16:21

I have this problem with tampons/cups... but I have a tilted cervix/uterus maybe that's why some of us have this issue and others not? Suspect stronger pelvic floor muscles wouldn't go amiss either.

Itwasntmeguv · 05/09/2023 16:30

I'm such a dinosaur - the menopause had hit me way before moon thingies had arrived!

However, I have frequently shot a tampon out, or at least if not fully out, out enough to dislodge the bugger and start again, whilst dropping the kids off at the pool. So yes, I'm sure anything else could be expelled in the same manner.

But now I feel like a freak of nature, as not many other people appear to have the same ability as me and the OP!

Oh and this:

Anyone who has given birth vaginally will have been told to “push like you’re trying to poo”.

I didn't need telling, I pushed and pushed and the relief at what I thought must have been the first of my DT's heads emerging was short-lived - when they told me I'd only had 2 of the biggest shits the delivery midwife 'had seen for a long time' The disappointment was real. The disappointment took a back seat to mortification when another nurse said she was taking 'the other twins' away to the neonatal unit to settle them in, whilst I got on with the matter of trying to deliver actual human beings this time My now 28 year olds still laugh if this story pops up 😂😂

RecycleMePlease · 05/09/2023 16:35

I can start to dislodge it if I really try hard and it's quite full (which I've done, out of curiosity), but unlike tampons, they sucker in so they are harder to eject than you might think.

honeylulu · 05/09/2023 16:39

Mine does slip down when I push. I'm not sure if it actually come right out because I then remove it to complete the poo as its so much more comfortable!

Mine also slips down a bit when I wee and if I REALLY need to go some wee ends up getting jetted into it somehow and i have to remove and empty it anyway. Perhaps I'm very slack 😳or maybe my holes are abnormally close together (yes I do know I don't wee from my vagina but this does actually happen).

kipperba · 05/09/2023 16:45

This sounds like something that would happen to someone who has had a posterior vaginal prolapse - maybe something to check with your gynaecologist?

ButterCrackers · 05/09/2023 16:47

If you have a lot of blood there might be a significant amount of blood and clots coming out with a poo. I’d take out the mooncup and get that blood into the loo. I think it depends if you have heavy period or not.

honeyrain · 05/09/2023 15:44

Do you normally wear tampons? Do you remove them upon each poo?! They don't move either in the same way a cup won't.

Doesn't everyone remove a tampon for a poo?! It was always the advice given on the packet, unless that has now changed. Can't be hygienic to poo with one in - yuck!

I don't see where the problem would be with hygiene?

SoSo99 · 05/09/2023 16:56

I once did some specialist pilates which included pelvic floor training, and there were three different aspects to this. One is the clenching the muscles around the clitorus, one is focusing on clenching the muscles around the anus, and the last one is the biggest...all the muscles aroud the vagina. I've just tried it out, and all these actions feel really different to me (it is also possible to clench the whole lot, all at the same time). Could it be that you can't poo with a mooncup/tampon in because you can't isolate these different actions? Just a thought.

Oysterbabe · 05/09/2023 16:52

The pooey string. Which you then pull out with your fingers. Plus the risk of cross contamination from bum to vag while you are wiping with the string hanging out.

Just a lot cleaner to take it out first!

No never used tampons in my life!

Good. Tampons can be dangerous, especially when people forget that they’re in and don’t remove them in a timely fashion, plus they should be changed regularly throughout the day.

When you open your bowels, you shouldn’t push or bear down, but rather the faeces should slide out with little pushing and definitely no bearing down. Please make sure your fluid intake is adequate and use your urine colour as a guide (the paler the better). Lack of fibre also causes issues with bowel motions.
