Where to return this ring to?

I found a ring tonight in a co op car park in north london. It was underneath my car and I saw it and picked it up. Went into the co op but could only see young staff and no manager to be found. I have no idea if the ring is worth anything, have googled, looks to be a dirty diamond of some description possibly, large stone, hallmark on inside of band so set on a real band of gold.
What do you think would be the best way to reunite this ring with its owner? Take in to the co op and hand into manager or take to the police station but that is a few miles away. Mens ring I think, hard to tell. Slighlty old fashioned but could be valuable. Thanks.

My gut feeling is to go back to the co op and hand it to the manager.

I doubt any of the young workers in the shop would have done anything bad with it so I'm not sure why you couldn't have just handed it in there? If someone realises they've lost it, that will probably be one of the places they will go and check.

Make a post on social media and ask if anyone has lost a ring.

Facebook post on local area page.

Found ring in Co op car park.

If you can accurately describe it I can arrange to meet you back in car park.

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 22:40

No I'm sure I was being over cautious. It was busy though and would have felt happier handing it over to someone in authority who would have more experience maybe or someone who would find out if someone was looking for it if that makes sense.

I'm not on fb and there's no guarantee the owner would be either! Worth a try but sounds time consuming.

Police?

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 22:48

Thanks @ChoresSuck would you go for police over co op car park?

I would ask a jeweller if it was valuable and if it was I would hand into the police and tell the co-op manager I'd done that.

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 22:48

The police could do a social media campaign maybe to find the owner?

@determinedtomakethiswork that's s great idea thanks.

I found a ring in the street, I took it to the nearest police station and also posted on local social media groups that I'd found it. I think you'd be better taking it to the police than handing it to shop staff.

IDontLoveTheWayYouLie · 04/09/2023 22:52

Just take it to the police station. If someone's looking for it they will get it back.

Aserena · 04/09/2023 22:55

I would 100% take it to the Police station.
Whenever I’ve lost anything valuable, I always head to the Police to ask. If it was a child’s toy then fair enough leave it at the shop, but somebody else’s valuable property goes to the Police.

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 22:58

Something stopped me handing the ring over to the staff at the co op I didn't know if it should be them that should be lumbered wirh matching it to the owner but the police station does make more sense. Also the owner may not have realised where they had lost it.

This happens often in our local group, with keys, jewellery, cards, phones and various accessories. A lot of them are returned to the owner.

It's worth a try.

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 22:59

Okay police station it is. Thanks everyone.

Take a photo to put on local Facebook group saying that you've handed it in to police station

Normandyapplecake · 04/09/2023 23:10

Thanks @Pix56 but I'm not on fb. Will take to the nearest police station and maybe they can do something on fb.

You went into the co op and saw only young staff and no manager - why didn't you ask? Excuse me, is a manager available please?

If not I'd understand your dilemma, but...

LuckOfTheDrawer · 04/09/2023 23:44

Take it to the police station, and hopefully the owner will get it back. And, if not, it's yours after three months.

Don't post a photo on FB - anyone dodgy could just go to the police station and say it's theirs.

CassiniG · 04/09/2023 23:45

What about Next Door? You can easily join that.

dooneyousmugelf · 04/09/2023 23:47

It should be handed in to the nearest police station to where you found it.

Yes but un joining Next Door is way too tricky!

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 23:53

What do you mean by “dirty diamond”? Do you mean like a blood diamond, or that it was literally covered in dirt?

If I’d lost a valuable ring I’d be retracing my steps, and would ask in the co-op if anyone had handed it in. It would never occur to me to go to the police. Do the police even handle lost property these days?

WhatapityWapiti · 04/09/2023 23:53

At least if you tons the co-op staff you were taking it to the police they would know to refer the owner there if they came back and asked.
