To be concerned at the lack of Sunhats...

I'm at Chessington (for my sins).

I would say that at least 90% of people don't have sunhats on - including the kids.

Am I just too precious about it?!

Judge all you like, but it’s a bit odd to be ‘concerned’ about other people’s clothing choices.

Pleaseme · 04/09/2023 13:18

I was just thinking about dc who are at school without Sun hats or sunscreen. They’ve not been needed since June as it’s been such a wet summer. Will have to hunt them down. I think people are out of the habit at the moment.

CoteDOpale · 04/09/2023 13:18

Would they not just fly off on the rollercoasters? I know scalp spray with SPF is quite popular, I’d bet a fair few of them are using that.

LittleBrenda · 04/09/2023 13:20

I can never believe my eyes either. I was at a big outdoor event yesterday and hardly anyone had a hat on.

I don't think making a child wear a hat is a clothing choice'. And I never made mine wear coats if they didn't want to as they just get cold. And you can combat that by running around etc but getting burnt is a serious thing. It's not just a matter of being uncomfortable.

Gymmum82 · 04/09/2023 13:20

My kids haven’t worn sun hats since they were about 3 and I don’t wear hats ever because I hate them. They’ll have sun cream on. I don’t think a hat is necessary

JauntyRedShoes · 04/09/2023 13:22

it’s something I would notice too. I’ve not heard of scalp SPF spray and am going to check it out.

They would, but I would assume the sensible thing would be to wear them in the queue and then leave them at the side if a fast ride.

Absolutely. My kids do get a choice though; wear a hat or don't go out.

My kids are 1&2 so always have a sun hat on when the sun is out however I’ve never even owned a sun hat before. I don’t think anything of adults who decide not to wear them but I do think kids should be made to wear sun hats!

Think yourself lucky then because having a burnt scalp is horrible - I speak from experience!

Hufflepods · 04/09/2023 13:34

Why? There are other ways to be safe in the sun.
I have never worn a sunhat as an adult.

Gymmum82 · 04/09/2023 13:35

We all have very long thick hair. It’s unlikely to happen and has never happen to me in my 40 odd years of existence

Darthwazette · 04/09/2023 13:36

DH wears a hat to cover his bald spot. DC usually will if out in the sun all day but I’m less concerned if they’re in or out. I never wear a hat. We all wear high factor sunscreen.

I couldn’t be concerned about what other random people do or not wear though.

Magnalux · 04/09/2023 13:38

I haven’t put a sun hat on my kids since they were babies, I also never wear a sun hat. We do all use factor 50, never has anyone ever had a burnt scalp. Even on foreign holidays, I hate hats, they’re sweaty and itchy. DH wears one but he’s bald!!

OhmygodDont · 04/09/2023 13:38

I thought adults only wore those big floaty hats on holidays or men sporting hats when watching football. I didn’t realise I’d been adulting wrong and I should have a hat. Never burnt my scalp though.

Middle and youngest child have hats they can wear and do. Oldest barely sees daylight let alone sun.

Devilsmommy · 04/09/2023 13:40

I've got an 11 month old who obviously gets covered in high factor sun cream but try getting him to keep a hat on, no chance 🤣

BlackberryCrumbs · 04/09/2023 13:43

I sometimes wear a hat for comfort (baseball cap or smarter floaty straw thing depending on where I am) because I can't bear having glaring light in my face and I'm not a huge fan of sunglasses.

I don't wear them for sun safety reasons though.

Dc mainly don't wear them and I haven't enforced it past toddlerhood. Dh never does. We all wear factor 30 and no burns.

JassyRadlett · 04/09/2023 13:46

Well, there are reasons skin cancer is on the rise in the UK and one is that people think suncream alone is sufficient protection, and that if you aren't as red as a lobster then your skin hasn't been damaged.

Ohhelpicantthinkofaname · 04/09/2023 13:49

As someone who hates hats but has never had sunstroke. Please mind your own business.

SpudleyLass · 04/09/2023 13:51

My daughter is autistic and refuses to wear hats, so I just limit her time in the sun instead.

Echobelly · 04/09/2023 13:51

I guess that's up to individuals - I personally can't go out in the hot sun hatless without having a thumping headache in 5 minutes flat, but other people seem to cope fine, so far be it for me to stop them.

PizzaPastaWine · 04/09/2023 13:55

We are a family of thick hair and Olive skin. Factor 50 and sunglasses suffice - DC included.

No requirement for headwear here other than for fashion purposes.

SquareOne01 · 04/09/2023 13:56

My dc would never wear hats, glasses, hair bobbles, coats or tights. Well I would put them on them but they would be on the floor by the front door by the time we left.

However op I do agree with you if I bothered to think about it.

Wednesdaysotherchild · 04/09/2023 13:58

I get sunburnt partings but I never wear a hat! Just do my hair without a parting if it’s super hot. If on a hike, take a bandana maybe for emergencies. I’m probably getting skin cancer anyway from an 80s childhood with pale celtic skin…

JorisBonson · 04/09/2023 13:59

I've never worn a sunhat in my life.
