To be concerned at the lack of Sunhats...

Dinojump · 04/09/2023 13:14

I'm at Chessington (for my sins).

I would say that at least 90% of people don't have sunhats on - including the kids.

Am I just too precious about it?!

I’ve never worn a sun hat and neither have DC, and neither does anyone in this part of Scotland. What fuckery is this now?

Notoironing · 04/09/2023 14:05

I am dubious about sunhats. They might stop your face getting burnt but I think they make you hotter and sweat more which can lead to sunstroke which can be much worse. It’s possible to solve the burn issue with cream.

it seems contradictory to me that we are told to put hats on for warmth in the winter but then told to wear them in summer?

Maddy70 · 04/09/2023 14:10

I have never been able to wear a sun hat. They get too hot.

I'm blonde and live in a hot country. Most of us here actually never wear a sun hat. I've never even thought a little it before ... tourists definitely do

Topofthemornintoya · 04/09/2023 14:11

I live in a hot country and the locals never seem the wear sunglasses! They are just happy to squint at eachother all the time! Hats arent eally a thing where I live either. My kids wear them but they also have factor 50 on and stay in the shade. We don't go out in the midday sun if there's no covering.

Orangeglows · 04/09/2023 14:13

I’ve only recently started wearing sun hats as an adult. I don’t know why it’s taken me so long, I always make the kids wear them and I do often get a burnt scalp! I’m religious about suncream too, factor 50 for all.

KnittedCardi · 04/09/2023 14:15

Sun hats for babies, old folk, bald folk, not generally required for anyone else, especially in the UK in Sept. UV today is Medium.

Way back in the mists of time, practically no-one wore hats or sun cream. That's probably why skin cancer is on the rise. Also because the highest incidence rate for skin cancer is age 85.

Gastropod · 04/09/2023 14:15

I have a few hats for when it's hot/bright outside, as do my kids. However, the last place I'd wear a hat would be to a theme park! It'd fly off or get lost within minutes.

Hollyppp · 04/09/2023 14:23

I make my children wear hats.

coats in the winter I encourage but don’t enforce

Peskytooth · 04/09/2023 14:25

I was surprised when I took my kids (both under 6) to the beach. They both had those long legged and armed swimsuits on with the swimsuit hats that cover their necks too.. they were the only ones on the beach with them on. Most kids were just in a regular swimming costume. It was very sunny but I wondered if I was being a bit precious.

Wishitsnows · 04/09/2023 14:28

I’ve never worn a sun hat in UK or on holiday. Never had a burned scalp.

WhatNoRaisins · 04/09/2023 14:30

I bet loads of people have had a good tidy up of the summer stuff before seeing this week's weather forecast.

Singleandproud · 04/09/2023 14:30

Well you'd like my teen DD OP, she slathers herself in sun lotion including her undercut and then wears a sun hat, but she's red headed and her limbs are as pale as casper.

BaronessBomburst · 04/09/2023 14:32

DS and I both have thick blonde hair, which protects our scalps. I get far too hot with a hat.
DH has thinner, black hair so always wears a hat.
We all use sun cream, wear sun glasses, and stay out of the direct sun, especially in the middle of the day.
You're being quite judgy.

bryceQ · 04/09/2023 14:34

I always have my son in a cap, he is 4.5. and factor 50. He has darker skin but I'm still super protective with his skin. But I often see children with no hat and looking quite pink.

Mariposista · 04/09/2023 14:34

You must be having a very boring day if this is what you are focusing on. But then some people do hate places like Chessington so perhaps your mind is wandering. Not to worry - back to work in a couple of days!

Phos · 04/09/2023 14:38

I rarely wear a sunhat in the UK and don't get sunburnt scalp. I wear one and put suncream on my parting abroad as I have had sunburnt parting before and that's not particularly comfortable.

My daughter often wears one but I don't force her unless it's absolutely red hot, which maybe it was in Chessington. Doesn't get that hot where we are.

I don't think I'd bat an eyelid at this in the UK - given I was in Turkey this year and, apart from babies, didn't see any kids in full length suits and only a few in the rash vest and shorts type.

Hopingforno2in2023 · 04/09/2023 14:41

I am always amazed by people not wearing sun hats but then I faint if in strong direct sunlight and DH and DS burn awfully so we are a family of hat wearers. We get a lot of compliments on our hats (we go for wide brimmed ones and DS in particular has very colourful ones).

Getting burnt isn’t about the heat, it’s about the UV. You can get sunburnt when it’s cold.

FrenchandSaunders · 04/09/2023 14:44

Hats don't suit me, never worn one.

Eastie77Returns · 04/09/2023 14:53

Currently at an outdoor wet play place in London. Must be about 200 children including mine playing. Can’t spot a single one with a hat. I think I last bought my two hats when they were about a year old. Feckless parenting I tell you!

That's exactly my feeling too. My head gets boiling hot in a hat. Then when I take it off to go indoors, my hair is plastered to my head with sweat. Not a good look.

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 04/09/2023 14:57

I'm autistic and can't wear hats for sensory reasons.

RedPony1 · 04/09/2023 15:12

I've never worn a hat (riding horses excluded)
I hate them.

Not taken any notice on whether children wear them though.

LegendsBeyond · 04/09/2023 15:18

It’s concerning. Skin cancer rates are soaring too.
