to cancel/rebook London (mini heatwave)

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 08:57

I struggle with the heat, have various health conditions that cause this, and also get very anxious in hot weather as I feel sick. Last time I was on holiday in similar heat I got heatstroke.

Booked a show in the West End for this week thinking the weather would be reasonable. Of course it's now going to hit 30 degrees on Wednesday (getting to London tomorrow). We're driving, four hours journey, air con in car. Hotel has air con, not sure about the theatre.

I want to change to next week when it's less hot/humid but would be an inconvenience/would be a bit more expensive.

No, YANBU: cancel/rebook
Yes, YABU: go as planned

I'd re book if it means you'll enjoy it. I hate big cities in the heat.

Whataretheodds · 04/09/2023 09:01

Which theatre? The older west end theatres get really hot

anothertrainwreck · 04/09/2023 09:02

This wouldn’t even occur to me to do, but given your anxiety and health conditions if it would enhance your enjoyment more to go in cooler weather and you can afford to pay the additional cost and deal with the inconvenience then do it.

That being said, you can largely stick to air-conditioned places, wear comfortable, cool clothing, carry water and a fan and take your time and you could be OK. Trying to manage your anxiety in these situations and not get panicky is important too as that helps your physical feelings.

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:03

@Whataretheodds it's Cabaret at The Playhouse, I just checked and it says it has air con so that's something I suppose!

If you can I’d rebook. We went to a london theatre in June n a really hot day, I’d phoned the theatre to check to see if they had air con, they had an air cooling system. In reality it was coolish in the bar areas but in the auditorium was really hot. My husband and daughter really struggled with the heat. Hope you have a great time whenever you decide to go.

MissDollyMix · 04/09/2023 09:06

Rebook! It gets really hot in London. I was down there earlier in the summer when it was a very civilised 19/20 degrees but it was hotter than hades down in the underground!!

LilyLemonade · 04/09/2023 09:06

I would rebook if you can; big cities aren’t much fun in the heat.

Jadeywithababy · 04/09/2023 09:06

Is your hotel close to the theatre/ are you driving to the theatre? If so I would say you’ll be ok because you’ll be in air conditioning pretty much the whole time but if you’re going to have to use public transport it’s going to get very hot so you may be more comfortable rebooking.

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:09

To add - we are five minutes walk between hotel and theatre. Parking is ten minutes from hotel. We are not planning to really sightsee or do much else, just hang out in the room as it's mostly a flying visit. Driving back Thursday.

The theatre has air con. I doubt whether they'll let you rebook under the circumstances.

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:03

@Whataretheodds it's Cabaret at The Playhouse, I just checked and it says it has air con so that's something I suppose!

I'd call them, explain your situation and ask.

Highlyflavouredgravy · 04/09/2023 09:13

I can't imagine having the kind of money to just lose because it is hot. Just go!

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:14

@sunshinesupermum I rebooked/changed dates once already because of a medical issue. I won't be able to exchange the tickets this time as my preferred seats are priced differently. So I would cancel the hotel, get a refund and rebook, but I would just have to buy new tickets for the show and take the hit on the current ones.

I'd re book if it means you'll enjoy it. I hate big cities in the heat.

Same for sure!

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:17

@Highlyflavouredgravy it's my own savings and it's my first trip in a long time due to health problems so I don't mind losing some money if it makes it easier. I'd rather not, I am all packed for tomorrow, but the weather reports of 'sweltering' are worrying me.

dynastyfan · 04/09/2023 09:19

We were at Cabaret when it was really hot awhile ago and it was absolutely fine in the theatre.
We absolutely loved it

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:37

@dynastyfan that's good to hear, thank you! this is a really huge thing for me so I'm really upset about the weather forecast. If I cancel the hotel I have to do it by 3pm today. Hence I'm freaking out somewhat about what to do.

DH really wants to go tomorrow and is sure I can manage but he doesn't understand hormonal hot flushes! (He is sympathetic but doesn't fully comprehend the feeling)

OP posts:
RoomUse · 04/09/2023 09:41

Assuming the theatre is going to be ok as suggested by a PP then I’d get a hand held fan to use outside of the auditorium. I have a couple and they are great. I hate the heat too.

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:43

@RoomUse already ahead of you there! I have a little electric fan and a paper fan in my handbag at all times!

OP posts:
Dahlietta · 04/09/2023 09:45

I hate the heat too, but if you're basically driving in an air-conditioned car to an air-conditioned hotel room to walk five minutes to an air-conditioned theatre and then return to the air-conditioned hotel room, I wouldn't be losing money because the rest of London is hot!

kittenmittons · 04/09/2023 09:49

@Dahlietta good point, my DH has the same opinion! Part of me does want to bite the bullet and go.

OP posts:
dynastyfan · 04/09/2023 09:51

I completely get the flushes issue but it was honestly fine in the theatre and if you are staying nearby this roof terrace is literally a 5 minute walk from the theatre and was gorgeous.
We had drinks here before the show and as it's high up there's a good breeze and fantastic views!

Dahlietta · 04/09/2023 09:51

I would! I think you heard about the heat and panicked, but your plan is fairly hot weather-proof.

Crunchymum · 04/09/2023 09:52

Re-book if you can, London in 30c is shit (I live here and am dreading it!)

Seashellies · 04/09/2023 09:54

If you were doing lots of walking around or sightseeing as well as the theatre then I'd say its worth trying to reschedule, but as you're parking close by and the hotel is close I'd go for it. I've been to that theatre in this really hot weather and didn't find it too hot (I hate the heat).
