to cancel/rebook London (mini heatwave)

I struggle with the heat, have various health conditions that cause this, and also get very anxious in hot weather as I feel sick. Last time I was on holiday in similar heat I got heatstroke.

Booked a show in the West End for this week thinking the weather would be reasonable. Of course it's now going to hit 30 degrees on Wednesday (getting to London tomorrow). We're driving, four hours journey, air con in car. Hotel has air con, not sure about the theatre.

I want to change to next week when it's less hot/humid but would be an inconvenience/would be a bit more expensive.

No, YANBU: cancel/rebook
Yes, YABU: go as planned

@RoomUse already ahead of you there! I have a little electric fan and a paper fan in my handbag at all times!

Good for you.

For next time, I can also recommend some really nifty German-made short neck scarves with integrated crystals that balloon up when put in water and then have an excellent cooling effect. Cheap enough not to get in trouble with customs. I've got one and UT was a lifesaver in past heatwave. Lots of people use them for walking trips apparently.

It wouldn't even cross my mind to cancel. Lots of us do have to live, travel and work in London in warm weather.... In your scenario I wouldn't cancel, sounds like you'll be inside with air con the whole time.

I would go and I hate London the heat. You are driving, there is parking and the hotel is near so no tube. I went to Cabaret and it was a really easy experience because of its great location. You won’t have far to walk and could go somewhere on the Southbank afterwards to eat.

@GrumpyPanda thank you for the recommendation!

Looks like we're about 50/50 on votes to cancel or go so far! I feel a bit more reassured now but not fully decided yet.

I'm a Londoner. To me, the really awful part of London in hot weather is public transport, the tubes (some lines worse than others) and the buses are disgustingly hot and airless.
Since you're not planning to use these, I'd go ahead.

Cantstaystuckforever · 04/09/2023 10:10

I agree with people who say you'll be almost entirely in air con, and should go. Lots of restaurants and most shops are air-conditioned too. Because it's been cool until recently, it's nothing like it gets to after a long heatwave, indoors and the tube are still generally cooler.

The only thing likely to be uncomfortable might be bus or tube journeys and you can book Uber Comforts that have air conditioning (or use black cabs) to travel around, for much less than it will likely cost you to cancel and rebook.

As a Londoner who also suffers from the heat I agree with PP that as you are not using public transport nor doing tourist stuff you should be fine. You have more air con (car, hotel and theatre) than I have in my flat! But call the theatre if you are still worried.

No, YANBU

I wouldn't want to go in this heat either. If you can, without charges, change the dates and you can then enjoy it all more.

Did you go?
