Car insurance doubled after somebody hit me?

121gigawatts · 03/09/2023 15:10

My renewal has just come through. My insurance has doubled after another insured driver hit my car whilst it was parked (I wasn't even in vehicle)

Their insurance paid out as they were fully liable.

Please tell me why my insurance has now doubled? I've done a comparison quote too and they're all the same, all because of this accident which was not my fault which my insurance didn't even pay out for.

AIBU - this is fair, you have had a claim even though you weren't liable and your insurance didn't pay out, it's still a claim

YANBU - this is not fair, you have not claimed against your insurance and it was not your fault

Also, does anybody know if there is any way around this? I honestly feel like crying, cost of living gone up hugely and now my insurance has doubled. I need my car to go to work and drop/pick up my children off at childcare. Public transport isn't an option where we live. I've been driving 15 years, never had a crash or claim, never had a penalty or anything and it feels like a kick in the teeth.

Insurance quotes have risen quite a bit anyway over the past year, I reckon mines up about 30% with no claims so part of the jump will be that.

The rest is because your claim has showed insurers that you park your car in a place where statistically you're at an elevated risk of being hit again and needing to claim again

MarieG10 · 03/09/2023 15:17

Yes. You have discovered the rip off of all insurance. Having a no claims bonus is a nonsense as it is a bonus if a hugely inflated base premium

121gigawatts · 03/09/2023 16:30

Unfortunately @jimmyhill it was a one off. DH and I went for a celebratory meal with family in next village and a man blacked out (due to fasting he told us) and hit our car and the car next to us. It's not somewhere we visit often at all and still the consequences are coming to bite us on the backside. If it had been hit in our works car park (me and dh work for same organisation) or outside house, I would understand, although I realise the insurance aren't going to delve into the details at all and don't care because we still took our car there. The place we visited has multiple restaurants and pubs on little narrow streets so I can see it being a place that's high in car insurance claims, especially if people are drinking and driving (which they do)

Yes @MarieG10 beginning to see what a real racket it all is, a family member recently tried to claim on house insurance after 40 years never claimed and had a very expensive policy, only to be declined for a ridiculous reason. Why even bother.

jimmyhill · 03/09/2023 16:41

It's not really a racket. I had an accident a few years ago in which someone was injured and required £££ of medical treatment. A bankrupting amount of legal and medical fees for the other party were fully covered by insurance. Took a modest hit on the premiums for a few years then they went back down.

121gigawatts · 03/09/2023 16:46

I understand that @jimmyhill but whats the point of 'protecting NCD' which I did, and costs extra if they're just going to increase the cost anyway?

Car insurance is ridiculous this year.
DH has 9 years + no claims. Usual premium is around £50 a month.
This year we can't get anything under £100. We need our car as we live rural

iamme21 · 03/09/2023 17:03

I’ve not had any claims in 20 years. Last year my insurance was £150, this years renewal has come in at £350. Nothing has changed so I can’t understand the huge jump in price.

IwantToDatePicard · 03/09/2023 17:09

I'm the same , £240 last year and £420 this year with no claims 😮

roseopose · 03/09/2023 17:10

This happened to me after some stupid woman drove across me and wrote my car off. If I had known I would have tried to get more out of her insurer to cover my premium increase. It really isn't fair. I did get it lower by shopping around though.

Snittle · 03/09/2023 17:18

DH’s went from £300 to £400 this year. After his renewal letter came through but before the renewal date someone drove into him and admitted fault (and it’s on dashcam). While we were reporting the accident to his insurer we got a renewed quote through for £500… a 25% increase for a non fault accident. We asked and this isn’t claimable. I’ve got a new sympathy for people who exaggerate injury symptoms, they’ll at least be no worse off, like we will be!

Lavender14 · 03/09/2023 17:21

This happened me, when I rang it turned out the other insurer had confirmed liability but not made payment. So it's still outstanding a year later. And I'm having to pay double on my insurance premium in the meantime waiting on it to go to court. Its entirely the fault of the insurance companies and nothing to do with me but I can do nothing about it. I'd ring and query it and argue that you were not at fault so shouldn't lose your no claims and check that the claim has been fully dealt with and closed.

MissBiljanaElectronika · 03/09/2023 17:26

NCD is often misunderstood

I think almost nobody understands it, not even sure I do, but it does NOT protect you from the insurance fee going up

it only protects the tiny no-claims discount percentage , not the full amount

NCD is a bit scammy

MissBiljanaElectronika · 03/09/2023 17:31

Even if you've protected your NCB, it isn't a guarantee that the premium won't go up later on. Your premium is decided by your claims history, and your NCB is taken off the final price.

so if you’d ncd is say 10%, they overal fee can still be doubled after a claim, but you keep that 10% discount

so if it was £700, last year you paid £630

this year they up it to £1400 and with the NCD still in place (cause you paid NCD protection) it will be £1260

NCD does not protect you from massive hike in fees

Densol57 · 03/09/2023 17:35

Ive got 20 + years NCB and no convictions etc. My Range Rover went from £500 to £1,700 a year ! Its my area ( London) as they are stolen a lot. I have a tracker, ghost , CCTV and barriers around my cars. Made no difference !

If I was it Kent at partners address it would be £450 ! I went for a black box 🤣 at age 57 and got the policy for £562 at my address ( Insure the Box ) Its utter madness this year for car insurance ! I feel your pain 😢

Lancrelady80 · 03/09/2023 21:00

Partly it's statistics screwing you over. I had an almost identical incident 15 years ago, except the prat who hit my car whilst I was in a school teaching on supply managed to hit my car when it was the ONLY car in an entire car park, parked right in the centre so clearly visible. I was fuming with both him and the insurance company. Apparently statistics say that once you've been hit, you're more likely to be hit again, even if entirely blameless and all settled totally without hassle by the other party. (The one good thing was he came asking at the school if anyone had car reg XYZ and owned up to what had happened.)

Also, insurance companies will say spare parts cost more this year due to price rises across the board, and demand for garages means higher costs etc etc. And even 2nd hand vehicles are more expensive due to chip shortages and less people buying brand new due to CoL crisis. Then there's increased overheads to the business, increased wages and bla de bla.

There's a bit of truth in that, but I don't believe an extra £100 or more per customer! Cost of living has given them a great excuse to hugely inflate premiums and so fill their pockets with impunity, as they are all at it.

JANFEBMAR23 · 03/09/2023 21:03

What insurance company is it?

121gigawatts · 03/09/2023 21:05

Mine has gone from £350 to £700. I used to pay it one go but can't really afford to do that right now so then in monthly installments it will add on another £50. The renewal quote is actually cheapest out of all comparisons.

I've been driving 15 years with no claims or convictions and all my NCD, I did not expect to be paying £700 a month for car insurance at my age and level of driving, and I only drive a Nissan, nothing fancy!

I will call my insurer and see if there is anything to be done and if the other insurer has paid out and settled as suggested by PP.

Thanks everyone.

I had an accident last year, hit and run. I'm still awaiting the court date, the other driver says he wasn't there even though I have him on dash cam 🙄

My premiums went up by £130 a year. I did a quote the other day, out of interest. They've got up another £144.

All the insurers seem to be charging more, and a bit extra.

Deathbyfluffy · 03/09/2023 21:08

Massive bump in premiums across the board this year for car insurance - I used to work in the industry so reached out a few months ago to ex-colleagues to ask why mine had rocketed.
More costs per claim, part unavailability and extra staff costs was the answer.

121gigawatts · 03/09/2023 21:12

Oh that's interesting @Deathbyfluffy to be fair the guy who hit us premium have gone up massively. If car had of been a little older it would have been a write off as he snapped the drive shaft when he hit it somehow! And insurer also made us replace two car seats. Can't have been cheap for them!

Willyoujustbequiet · 03/09/2023 21:14

Mine has gone down this year. £16 a month.

Hastings if anyone is interested.

Insurance has doubled for many in the last year anyway. Could be worth double checking with your insurance anyway. If you weren't at fault your price should not rise for this reason.

Noalcohol · 03/09/2023 21:19

Do you buy the NCD protection. Mine went down in 2022 after an accident in 2021 but it has risen this year by 20% but I have NCD protection.

Bovrilla · 03/09/2023 21:22

My renewal is nearly double and had no claims etc at all.

Prices gone mad, shopping around to get a better deal 🙄

fearfuloffluff · 03/09/2023 21:38

Insurers are just awful. We told house insurers we were having building works done (loft so not like the house had a problem or anything) - that jacked up insurance at renewal. I think people who never have building work might be more of a risk!
