Car insurance doubled after somebody hit me?

My renewal has just come through. My insurance has doubled after another insured driver hit my car whilst it was parked (I wasn't even in vehicle)

Their insurance paid out as they were fully liable.

Please tell me why my insurance has now doubled? I've done a comparison quote too and they're all the same, all because of this accident which was not my fault which my insurance didn't even pay out for.

AIBU - this is fair, you have had a claim even though you weren't liable and your insurance didn't pay out, it's still a claim

YANBU - this is not fair, you have not claimed against your insurance and it was not your fault

Also, does anybody know if there is any way around this? I honestly feel like crying, cost of living gone up hugely and now my insurance has doubled. I need my car to go to work and drop/pick up my children off at childcare. Public transport isn't an option where we live. I've been driving 15 years, never had a crash or claim, never had a penalty or anything and it feels like a kick in the teeth.

Ours went up for the same reason. It's disgraceful IMO.

We've had 3 accidents: one for me (well my car was parked and it got badly hit), one for ds (driving along minding own business, driver on phone smashes into his side) and one for dh (stopped at zebra crossing for pedestrian, van rear ends him not looking).

our insurance is hugely expensive, even though all 3 accidents were 100% someone else's fault. it's a bloody scam. like everything in britain these days.

jlpth · 03/09/2023 22:04

my car was hit by a car - driver lost control - nothing to do with my parking!

ShitMermaid · 03/09/2023 22:13

An uninsured driver hit me (I was in the car) she drove off. Someone saw it and reported it to the police.
They didn’t do anything.
My car was in the garage for 2 weeks so I had the expense of taxi’s. Then my insurance went up by £80 a month for a year!
I wasn’t hurt which is the main thing but I am sure that there are cases when someone has been injured too😞

daffodilandtulip · 03/09/2023 22:42

Yeah mines gone up a ridiculous amount after someone pulling out of a side street, into the side of me. I was in normal traffic flowing at 30mph and they just pulled out into no space.

AndWordsWhen · 03/09/2023 22:59

Phone and check it has been logged as a no fault claim.

MegaManic · 03/09/2023 23:33

No claims for 15+ years, was £650 last year (which was a bit high but I was lazy and just renewed) and it is £1,150 this year. Nothing has changed except the value of my car is lower because it is a year older! I will be shopping around and trying to get a better deal from somewhere else.

121gigawatts · 04/09/2023 07:28

My insurer is LV and seem to be the cheapest from comparison. Usually I find when I do a comparison it goes down. Will be phoning today but don't expect much 🙄

Seems everybody is in a similar situation. Inflating the cost of everything and trying to keep people off the roads!

This happened me, when I rang it turned out the other insurer had confirmed liability but not made payment. So it's still outstanding a year later. And I'm having to pay double on my insurance premium in the meantime waiting on it to go to court. Its entirely the fault of the insurance companies and nothing to do with me but I can do nothing about it. I'd ring and query it and argue that you were not at fault so shouldn't lose your no claims and check that the claim has been fully dealt with and closed.

This as happened to me and my insurance has quadrupled.

Rainbowsandrainclouds1 · 04/09/2023 07:48

My brand new car was written off earlier in the year by a motorist who sadly died. It was ruled his fault. Ive had to pay increased premiums on a new vehicle until the insurers settle. Now someone has reversed into our brand new car whilst it was parked over the weekend. Im dreading the hoik in premium again.

Mintyt · 04/09/2023 07:55

Premium is based on risk, so you. Your occupation, address age use. Once you have had an incident you are a greater risk, a non fault accident is a loss. So your premiums will be effective even tho it's not your fault.
See if your current insurer can flex the renewal price to get it lower this means they make less profit on your quote.
Protecting NCD only protects the years not the price.

978q · 04/09/2023 08:34

They are profiteering because they get away with it, we know of one case where a policy up for renewal, which was £320 previously, was quoted at 300% more for renewal, with the exact same details as before. She done go compare and got it for £330 from Shiela's Wheels, also reported rip-off merchants to ombudsman.

WhatHaveIFound · 04/09/2023 08:41

My mum's LV insurance has gone up by 30% this year despite no accidents. Maybe because of her age (85). Same with my MIL.

I expected DD's to go up as she was involved in an accident last summer and is only 21. Luckily dash cam footage shows the other car at fault though he hasn't admitted it yet. Only a modest increase for her (£40) so she's quite relieved.

Biker47 · 04/09/2023 08:42

The three accidents I've been in I've claimed for personal injury; but that's only the real way to mitigate the increase in costs for the next 5 years usually, and the personal injury payment could sometimes be wiped out by the increase in premiums anyways; so you essentially end up with nothing. Obviously can't claim for that if they hit your car when you weren't in it, also, they've reduced whiplash claim payouts drastically over the past few years anyways.

Handlecarefully · 04/09/2023 08:45

Twice I've had cars written off in no-fault accidents. Both times I was stationary, once hit side on, the other from behind. It definitely affected my insurance cost and there's nothing to be done about it.
This weekend someone ran into the back of my car at low speed. There is damage, but not a lot. I'm checking the price of getting it sorted but at the moment both of us agree to leave the insurance companies out of it. I don't want another increase on my premiums.
(I don't need advice to put it through insurance etc etc... just commenting).

DelurkingAJ · 04/09/2023 08:47

Companies in the U.K. (eg More Than) are exiting the motor insurance market because costs have gone so high that there is no profit to be made. Companies made significant losses last year because premiums weren’t set allowing for rampant inflation (which has been much more extreme for car parts than most other things)…ergo premiums have gone up massively across the market this year.

theresnolimits · 04/09/2023 08:47

Mine went up with insurer I’ve been with for 6 years. I called them and they offered £50 off. Shopped around and got it for less than last year’s.

It’s worth looking at whether you can tweak ~ are you covered for commuting, extra driver, do you need fully comp, windscreen, bigger excess? So often inertia stops us changing things we don’t need.

There are better deals out there if you’ve got the patience.

Oblomov23 · 04/09/2023 08:55

Mines doubled, from £350, to £700. I don't think so. Now got a quote for under £400.

AngelsWithSilverWings · 04/09/2023 10:27

I'm dreading our renewal. After 30 years of accident free driving we have been hit twice this year - once by a women reversing into us and then by a massive lorry that took us out while we were stationary waiting to enter a roundabout. The insurance company for the lorry driver tried to claim it was 50/50 even though we had photo evidence and witnesses and the driver had even admitted fault!

Our insurance company decided to accept 50/50 but protect our NCD - I think it's cheaper for them to do that maybe?

Driving standards do seem to have slipped around where we live - we have so many near misses I'm thinking about getting a dash cam.

SnapdragonToadflax · 04/09/2023 10:31

Yup, this happened to us when someone went into the back of us at a roundabout. Shopping around got it a bit lower but it took a few years to 'clear'. So fucking annoying.

sleepyscientist · 04/09/2023 10:31

Mine has gone up as I claimed for a cracked windscreen (it said free) was really annoyed as could have claimed off the manufactures cover I got included with the car. It's all a massive scam and is made worse by the ability to claim for personal injury when we have the NHS

Bax765 · 07/09/2023 10:23

We also had a no fault claim (someone drove into the back of us when we were stationary) and our insurance company (One Call) want to increase our annual premium from £270 up to £850, so more than triple!! We are shopping around but it seems ridiculous that we are now impacted by something that was in no way our fault, which our insurance company did not have to pay out for.

enchantedsquirrelwood · 07/09/2023 10:26

MarieG10 · 03/09/2023 15:17

Yes. You have discovered the rip off of all insurance. Having a no claims bonus is a nonsense as it is a bonus if a hugely inflated base premium

Yes. Even if you don't claim, but tell them (which you are meant to do) they will put your premiums up.

As for the 30% increase, mine more than doubled this year with no claims or incidents! I got them to knock about £100 off, but it was still close to double. And my car is a 2017 reg so losing value all the time.
