To not pay for a garage door?

Badabingy · 03/09/2023 12:36

Hoping for some advice.

we bought a garage door online, chose forest green to match our front door (front door painted by us, so not bought from the same company). We weren’t expecting a perfect match but what has arrived is a yellowy green (DH calling it diarrhoea green). It’s very different to what we ordered or thought we’d ordered, doesn’t look anything like the door colour and is a really unpleasant colour.

Contacted the company and they say in their T&Cs that variations in colour happen, and they won’t take the door back as it’s not faulty.

I do get that colours online can be a bit different, but this is a huge difference, and the colour that’s arrived is really horrible.

Any advice as to what our rights are/ what we can do? AIBU to expect them to refund us (or provide a door that’s similar in colour to what we ordered?). I feel I’m not but the company is adamant.

Did they offer any swatches or list the colours as British Standard colours etc? It's hard to argue it looked different on screen as people set their computers differently.

Is it covered by consumer contracts regulation which replaced distance selling regulations? although I’ve no clue who pays for return courier service.

  • Your right to cancel an order for goods made at a distance starts from the moment you place your order and ends 14 days from the day you receive your goods

Can you post a picture?

towriteyoumustlive · 03/09/2023 13:44

Can you post a picture of your door and the online picture of what you ordered?

Colour is subjective. Does their website say there might be colour variation? Do they offer swatches of the colour?

SisterMichaelsHabit · 03/09/2023 13:47

Yeah they should post the BS/RAL colours for the paint to avoid this sort of problem. If you return it, you'll usually have to pay shipping and won't you be without a garage door until you can order a new one and get it delivered? I'd be tempted to just get some spray paint and go over the outside myself.

KateyCuckoo · 03/09/2023 13:49

Pics?

Dascha · 03/09/2023 13:50

Do they offer colour samples, either free or at a cost, and if so did you order any?

Dotcheck · 03/09/2023 13:52

Just paint it.

TidyDancer · 03/09/2023 13:53

It's difficult to judge without photos but if it is a substantial difference (and not just a case of viewing it in a different light etc) then I'd probably not be happy but would likely just get it painted.

OwlsDance · 03/09/2023 13:53

If you bought it online you have a right to return it for any reason whatsoever, even if you just changed your mind. You have 14 days from delivery day to tell them you want to return it, and further 14 days to actually do it.

I would get back to them, and quote Consumers Rights Act. If they still don't refund you, you can go to small claims court.

OwlsDance · 03/09/2023 13:55

An alternative would be for them to give you a discount for the cost of paint.

BlackberryCrumbs · 03/09/2023 13:58

Have you looked at their other colours- is the yellowy green more similar to another option they offer than the one you chose?

If so I'd go down that route, that it's clear the colour they sent you is x not x.

Badabingy · 03/09/2023 13:59

the first colour (the door) is from the website and is the colour ordered. The second is what we received.

its not a plastic protection cover that you need to remove? Only a thought.

No all the plastic has been taken off.

Google throws up a variety of shades of green as forest green. I would call your front door British Racing Green which on google comes up as exactly the same colour as your front door.

ShesJustAShyGirl · 03/09/2023 14:22

I’d say they were two different colours… does any amount of screen colour tweaking give you the same colour?

BlackberryCrumbs · 03/09/2023 14:27

Hmm I'd say that's pretty close to be honest...probably close enough to count as a colour variation.

Nopenopenopenopenopenope · 03/09/2023 14:33

The first one is more like Amsterdam green and the second is moss green. Entirely different.

Janieforever · 03/09/2023 14:38

I’m not going to lie the second one which you got is lovely.

can you post an image from the brochure of what you ordered. Because what you posted looks like it is not a colour image from a garage door company.

That doesn’t look like a garage door in the first image? What company was it?

Dascha · 03/09/2023 14:49

I don't think the starting point here is whether internet randoms think the colour matches your front door.

Firstly can you return it under distance selling? Try that first because it's no quibble, but if you are out of the time limit or it was made to order, or it's no longer in resellable condition, that is no good to you. Secondly do they sell a lighter green on their website, and if so check the colour codes on your order paperwork, the website and the door itself, and sense check whether it might be a miscoded lighter green one. Thirdly have you got any evidence, like colour swatches, of a significant difference from what was advertised?

If none of that applies then I think you'll have a fight on your hands. The colours do look different to me so it might be winnable at small claims if you are so minded, but painting it would be much easier, plus you could get an exact match.

Dascha · 03/09/2023 14:51

Apologies I misread the first pic as your front door not theirs

towriteyoumustlive · 03/09/2023 14:57

Looking at the two pictures they look very different shades of green.

You have two options:

  1. Claim under the consumer rights act as not being as described and either ask for a full refund or replacement, although I am guessing they'll defend it with their colour disclaimer...
  2. Return it under distance selling regulations. This is assuming it was chosen from specific sizes and colours rather than you specifying what size to have it made. You'll likely have to pay return postage.
Janieforever · 03/09/2023 15:02

Yeah that image is from a front door company, maybe the same company but it’s not a garage door image.

op, are you willing to post the site, as if not, it does look like it’s your error.
