OK I might be totally unreasonable...but ... I'm sure there are two camps here.
If you've handled raw chicken or meat etc. Preparing to cook it I've seen so many people recently (and even someone on good morning!) Just give hands a light rinse with water and drying it then carrying on! You've not gotten rid of any bacteria and are spreading it everywhere!
Surely you wash with a bit of soap?
I'm no clean freak but bloody hell this I don't understand! Just why? It's well known that you can get very ill doing this...

Been to a bbq recently and seen the host do the same - didn't end up eating much and surprise surprise they had the runs that evening (could have bloody told you that 😵‍💫)

So please explain to me if you disagree with me why you don't wash your hands (or use the same damn tongs you used to handle raw meat to take cooked meat off the bbq). What am I missing ?

And if you agree with me - talk about your stories !

I am, by MN standards, pretty lax on hygiene but even I wash my hands after handling raw meat and have separate utensils.

RampantIvy · 03/09/2023 08:52

I always wash my hands after handling raw meat. It's a no brainer.

LadybirdOnALog · 03/09/2023 08:54

We don’t eat at m’y I les any more after my MIL just wiped raw chicken juice on her hands……. On the dish cloth used for sting clean dishes!
Que lots if shit posted on Facebook bout how they used to lick the raw chicken knife as kids and survived

Clymene · 03/09/2023 08:58

I have forever been traumatised by that public health film where everything is black and white except the chicken juice which is fluorescent pink.

I don't touch anything after handling raw chicken - not even the tap or the soap - I use my elbow.

Coastalcreeksider · 03/09/2023 08:59

I really dislike handling raw meat so on the occasions when I have to, I always have a bowl of hot water and washing up liquid ready. All utensils go in as I finish using them and I get clean ones out and I wash my hands properly before handling anything else.

I'm really obsessive with washing my hands anyway when handling food whether it's raw meat or just cutting up veg, making a sandwich etc.

Noangelbuthavingfun · 03/09/2023 09:00

@LadybirdOnALog just yuck!
I'm wondering if this is the same camp of people who don't wash hands after being to the loo?
Or if you could be fastidious about one aspect and not the other?
Husband and I had a drunken conversation the other day about this and compared notes and thankfully we agree on both ...phew😆

I wear food handling gloves with raw chicken and then still wash my hands.

BorrowedThyme · 03/09/2023 09:02

An awful lot of pathogens are transferred by soap - hot water kills pathogens by itself, in may cases, but if you are using shared soap, use liquid soap, not solid

Phos · 03/09/2023 09:05

I’m by no means a clean freak, probably a slattern by MN standards, but I always wash my hands after touching raw meat and have the separate colour coded knifes and boards. I think I was traumatised by the same public health film as @Clymene

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 03/09/2023 09:07

I definitely do wash my hands after handling raw meat and spray the chopping board with anti bsc spray etc etc

But
Handling chicken and not washing hands doesn't mean you definitely will become ill. The BBQ thing may have been a coincidence not necessarily down to the chicken.

megletthesecond · 03/09/2023 09:08

Yanbu.
I rarely have meat at home so I use disposable gloves to handle it. Utensils straight in dishwasher, area wiped. Bin gloves then wash hands just in case.

mondaytosunday · 03/09/2023 09:10

I'm very relaxed about most things but I wash with soap after handling raw meat, wash the knife and cutting board thoroughly.

But it increases the risk significantly, and having had campylobacter poisoning I would rather avoid the risk entirely.

Doesn't the water have to be so hot that you would need to go to A and E if you washed your hands in it, though? 70 degrees or something? My understanding of it is that soap attaches to the bacteria and slides off, with the bacteria, as you rinse. The warmer the water is, the better the lather will be, but cold water and soap is pretty much just as effective, so long as you lather and rinse well. Relying on only hot water to kill bacteria would, to the best of my knowledge, risk burning your hands. Its all about the detergent and proper rinsing. I wash my meaty cutlery with detergent and warm water then put it in the dishwasher to get a proper sanitising blast of hot water, but it's scalding and would do me serious damage if I tried myself.

Obviously, it depends on the pathogen, yes I wash up in very hot water, but I use gloves, and wash my hands in cooler water.

Soap is not as safe as people think though. It destroys some pathogens, it harbours others.

Moonberri · 03/09/2023 09:14

It annoys me when chefs do this on TV as well. Hands full on into a load of meat then they use those raw meat hands to turn on the tap, sprinkle on a bit of water, turn off the tap, wipe hands on a towel. So now there's not only harmful pathogens on their fingers and hands, that they use to continue cooking, it's also all over the tap and the towel for the next person. Vile.

NotFastButFurious · 03/09/2023 09:15

OMG I watched my dad handle the chicken packet last week (he separating the film off the base to recycle) and then he wasn’t going to wash his hands. When I pointed it out he wiped them on the dishcloth 😵his next attempt was to run them under the tap and he finally agreed to wash them properly using washing up liquid because my parents don’t keep soap in the kitchen……which probably tells you a thing or two about their food hygiene standards. Yet my mother is the one who preaches to everyone else about levels of cleanliness!!

Moonberri · 03/09/2023 09:16

I use surgical gloves to handle raw meat and use kitchen scissors to cut it over the pan. That way you don't contaminate any chopping boards, knives etc. Just a pair of kitchen Scissors that go straight in the dishwasher.

CosyCoffee · 03/09/2023 09:18

What a palaver, I just lick my fingers then wipe the rest on the tea towel that I use to dry the baby's bottles.

No. Washing your hands with soap, properly for 20 seconds, breaks up the bacteria’s cell walls which kills them.

The water doesn’t actually need to be hot at all.

I'm with @CosyCoffee . Sort of. Use seperate boards, wash knife, quick wash of hands and carry on. No gloves( plastic waste) or scissors or using elbows to turn on taps.
Am nearly 60 with 3 adult ds and havent poisoned anyone yet. I dont think!

I'd say exactly this too.

carouselthoughts · 03/09/2023 09:41

This is why I don't eat what other people cook, except my in-laws whom I know I have perfect food hygiene.
