OK I might be totally unreasonable...but ... I'm sure there are two camps here.
If you've handled raw chicken or meat etc. Preparing to cook it I've seen so many people recently (and even someone on good morning!) Just give hands a light rinse with water and drying it then carrying on! You've not gotten rid of any bacteria and are spreading it everywhere!
Surely you wash with a bit of soap?
I'm no clean freak but bloody hell this I don't understand! Just why? It's well known that you can get very ill doing this...

Been to a bbq recently and seen the host do the same - didn't end up eating much and surprise surprise they had the runs that evening (could have bloody told you that 😵‍💫)

So please explain to me if you disagree with me why you don't wash your hands (or use the same damn tongs you used to handle raw meat to take cooked meat off the bbq). What am I missing ?

And if you agree with me - talk about your stories !

I am very hygienic and it’s a no brainer to wash hands after handling raw meat/ going to the toilet etc

Unfortunately there are a lot of dirty people out there who have no clue or care for hygiene.

Look at the amount of takeaway outlets who are closed down etc due to lack of hygiene.

Bleurgh 🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢🤢

I always wash my hands after touching raw meet or fish…but…I’ll eat steak tartare and sashimi quite happily so willing to be accused of double standards 😂

I’ve also eaten raw (sashimi) chicken on plenty of occasions in Japan, and never been ill, but I wouldn’t try it Europe. I’ll eat pink/rosé lamb anywhere, and happily eat pink pork in Italy…but wouldn’t in Germany or the UK. I’m an inconsistent mess really 😂

This reminds me of a family member who rinses raw chicken and fish under the kitchen tap splashing everything within a foot of it and then gets offended when I don't want to eat or drink there.

No. Washing your hands with soap, properly for 20 seconds, breaks up the bacteria’s cell walls which kills them.

The water doesn’t actually need to be hot at all.

https://www.cdc.gov/handwashing/faqs.html#:~:text=Use%20your%20preferred%20water%20temperature,when%20you%20wash%20your%20hands.

That's what I thought. It doesn't matter whether the water is is hot or even cold, so long as it lathers up. I just meant that if water alone is to kill bacteria, it needs to be too hot to even wash your hands with in the first place.

That will teach me not to read the second half of a post properly! Really sorry Blush

I have forever been traumatised by that public health film where everything is black and white except the chicken juice which is fluorescent pink.

I don't touch anything after handling raw chicken - not even the tap or the soap - I use my elbow.

Same

I blame TV chefs

C1N1C · 03/09/2023 19:28

Whenever I prepare raw meat, I have a kettle on standby to clean the board at the tools I use.

XenoBitch · 03/09/2023 20:01

I only cook for myself, and my hygiene is lax (non existent pretty much). Never had an issue.

pickledandpuzzled · 03/09/2023 20:48

Hmm. I'm a bit unsure about this one. I'm very fussy about some things, less so about others.

DH is appalling, swishing a wet cloth across the surface to wipe up raw meat juice then not washing the cloth properly. Basically creating a moist breeding ground for germs and using it to infest the whole kitchen. He thinks I'm fussy when I intervene.

That said, our hands are covered with layers of dead skin that slough off all the time. I'd be surprised if briefly touching meat needed a full scale decontamination wash. I tend to save that for when I've been doing something mucky and know that bacteria will be under my nails and in my cuticles. A rinse or wipe seems enough otherwise- and no one has ever been ill after eating at mine.

pickledandpuzzled · 03/09/2023 20:49

Totally agree about the tongs and utensils though. I'm very careful about that and chopping boards etc.

Daniki · 03/09/2023 21:40

Actually wonder this all the time! 😂😂My friend and I were watching at home with the fury's and parks was cutting chicken and rinsed her hands under the tap and that was it. 🫠 tv chefs are awful for it too.
I'm so weird about chicken in particular anyway, I also saw that health & safety video of the chicken juice all over the kitchen, I use a knife and fork to take the chicken out of the packet, cut it up and then I still wash my hands. Doesn't help I cannot stand the feel of raw chicken or the juice 🤢🤢
