To wonder who’s Ridiculous idea that stupid piece of Plastic was…

Yes you know the one I’m talking about. I don’t even have to mention the bane of my existence! Whenever you see anybody drinking from one of these, it’s awkward and unintuitive. What a ludicrous and quite frankly futile exercise in trying to save the planet.

I am of course talking about the piece of plastic on bottle lids for soft drinks, meaning you cannot easily drink out the bottle anymore without it snapping back in your face or grating over your skin. It’s like we are being guilted and shamed for this, plastic water bottles don’t contain it, just soft drink ones.

I personally can’t stand them! And don’t know anybody who sits and says they are a good idea…

Show me some of this data and these well respected studies?

As far as I know most bottles go into rubbish bins which is then either recycled or disposed of. Not into our oceans and the sea! You can find all sorts of studies on the internet including all the ‘flat earth’ stuff so come with actual facts and statistics and information or it means zilch.

Do your own research. You can evaluate if you think it’s credible then.

Perhaps you should join one of the regular local community beach cleans and see what is collected. 🙄

OP, do you genuinely think it’s a conspiracy that plastic litter ends up in the ocean, just because you personally have never seen any? And that everyone screws the kids back on and recycles them correctly, not litters? Or are you just frothing for effect?

There’s just not much evidence of it that anyone is producing is there?

What I’m more concerned about is why don’t they remove all single use plastics and replace with a suitable alternative? Oh wait because these aren’t single use plastics and can be easily recycled!

It’s no different to those bottles with a flip cap like lucozade sport. Just hold the cap back as you drink

NoSquirrels · 02/09/2023 18:21

I’m getting the impression you don’t know much about much, OP.

Small changes like this are excellent. Buy cans if you don’t like the new style bottles.

They’re not excellent for people with certain disabilities, my husband can’t drink from cans, he can drink from a bottle after opening it with an aid. The new bottles can’t be opened with a bottle opener, even if they could, he can’t then move the lid out of the way to drink.

Hungrycaterpillarsmummy · 02/09/2023 17:15

Well, if you think about how many bottles of the stuff are sold every day...I'd say it probably is a problem. Microplastic pollution is a big thing.

I've actually only come across this once with a bottle of ginger ale. This was a one off and actually we don't drink anything fizzy so not an issue to us 😇

The vast majority of waste plastic is nets and other equipment associated with the fishing industry. Most microplastics in the sea are from the same.

SweetcornFritter · 02/09/2023 18:24

I’d rather go without than buy drinks in a plastic bottle these days.

Stopthatknocking · 02/09/2023 18:25

My local Council won't take bottle lids. So we have to detach them and bin the lids.
Anyone who believes the new marketing and throws the whole bottle and lid into the recycling ends up contaminating the load and it all needs to be taken to landfill.

At least, that's what the council tells us.

sidarisally · 02/09/2023 18:27

Thanks for posting about this. I thought I'd list my grip strength when I couldn't easily detach it by hand recently as I've done previously. It all makes sense now. And yes, totally with you on this, OP. Life's hard enough without having that or the lid poking in your face when you just want a relaxing drink.

Aha - I’m not going mad! I’m sure that’s what I’ve been told as well.

Silly reply.

Youre assuming that millions of bottler owners unscrew the lifsband discard of those separately. Just not true! Most people screw the lid back on before disposal. They are trying to solve a problem that isn’t there. I now actually remove the lid and I’m not careful about screwing it back on anymore (because it’s so difficult!) so if anything they’re just increasing the amount of litter and micro plastics that are going into the ground or into the oceans.

It will actually make it harder to sell these at concerts as I many venues that I've attended, you can buy the 500ml bottles of soft drinks but the bar takes the lid off the bottle so that either the lid or the whole bottle can't be used as missiles during the concert (and believe me I'm not attending concerts where throwing bottles would generally be a thing that is done). I don't think the response that @Hungrycaterpillarsmummy gave was a silly response. Equally valid to be honest.

Upsizer · 02/09/2023 18:31

Unless you are an anteater I really don’t see the issue with the design of the caps

Floopyfloop · 02/09/2023 18:32

They are the work of the devil!

BasiliskStare · 02/09/2023 18:36

I hate these attached tops. I have nerve damage in one hand and cannot take the top off a bottle of tonic water now and then put the cap back on without cutting that thing off. ( This is not a single use drinking bottle eg for a festival , it is a bottle I would like to recap and put back in the fridge. ) I too scissor the thing off.

RantyAnty · 02/09/2023 18:38

The mediocre male who decided this, seems really pleased with himself.

Mabelface · 02/09/2023 18:47

Stupid bloody things. I ended up covered in diet coke on the train because the bottle fell over, and the lid hadn't screwed back on properly.

CPLawyer · 02/09/2023 18:48

Volvic water bottles have them too! It's really annoying!

GordanoBenito · 02/09/2023 18:49

@ReleasetheCrackHen "Sorry but that’s not what “R&D” means."

Er....yes it does. What do you think the R stands for? Confused

Companies don't implement a major change to their packaging on a whim, they run loads of trials and RESEARCH beforehand.

They’re doing it as marketing. So they can keep pumping sludge into rivers and lakes but unwitting consumers think ‘oh well aren’t they environmentally friendly!’ Even though they are not

Pour the drink into a glass.
Children need to be taught in school how to drink from a glass.
Obviously they can’t expect their feckless parents to do it.
Bottle fed into adulthood. FFS.

Riapia · 02/09/2023 18:57

Do not drink in the street.

DragonFly98 · 02/09/2023 18:58

I knew what you meant before you open the thread. Just twist and you can snap it off. I don't under why it's there though can someone please explain.

Universitynewbie · 02/09/2023 19:10

RingsOfSaturnn · 02/09/2023 18:03

No. Don’t be obtuse and misquote me deliberately. What I’m saying is that these are now being cut off drink bottles by myself and many others clearly from this post. It is now more difficult to get these lids to attach. Therefore it is now more likely that I will dispose of them separately thus negating the point of introducing these nightmare lids in the first place.

Also from a customer service point of view. Big brands like Coke need to understand that customers vote with their feet and we are now shopping with Pepsi more often. They can’t do things that deliberately irritate their customers all in the name of the environment. If they really cared about the environment they’d stop using single use plastic entirely. However all they do is put on a show by doing a bare minimum action which every customer notices hence increasing their perceived ‘green’ standing within society.

What would you propose they use instead of 'single use plastic' ?, the plastic in plastic bottles like these is PET and can be recycled.
Companies can only do so much then it comes down to the consumer and governments to do the rest, we also have to look at this globally not just on a local basis (by local I mean Europe as a continent) . Recycling facilities vary massively by country. You might not see huge amounts of plastic our and beaches and in our oceans here but some areas of Asia have huge issues with this. 80% of plastic is not recycled currently, this needs to change.
If you would like to read more about plastics and recyclability then the Ellen McArthur foundation is a good source.

To the poster whose council doesn't take black/dark plastics - this was because manufacturers needed to add optical brighteners to the plastic which then cause problems at the reutlingen facilities but there is a solution to this now and most manufacturers should be making dark plastic that way now

Truemilk · 02/09/2023 19:11

I yank them straight off
