People who find others full of themselves / arrogant

I'm very intrigued if you often find people arrogant / full of themselves and what causes you to think that of them ?

I sometimes find people a bit boastful/ full of themselves / occasionally arrogant, but I don't feel that way about people often.

A few people I know seem to find people arrogant and boastful a lot and I sometimes wonder why that is.

People who 'tell it like it is' generally don't like it when others tell them how it is. That's my observation.

This could be the strapline for Mumsnet…!

Layinwait · 31/08/2023 16:59

Not at all. Most people in my life and that I come in to contact with are generally very modest

Layinwait · 31/08/2023 16:59

Often “tell it like it is” is a euphemism for being nasty and bitchy

Ha ha

Most people are OK, which makes the arrogant/entitled ones stand out more so we notice them more perhaps?

Choccyp1g · 31/08/2023 17:09

In my experience from several hobby groups, the second most annoying person is the most vocally annoyed by the most annoying person.

Hotitalian · 31/08/2023 17:10

This!

HappyCamperTent · 31/08/2023 17:11

There’s a woman in work who will quite happily tell everyone that she is better than them… with a little tinkly laugh like she’s joking. But she’s not. She’s a twat

Oh god, this.

I'm arrogant as all hell, but I'm not confrontational because I don't think it's worth my time (next level arrogance, that is!). People who want to be king or queen of the dunghill and fight for it don't realise that they ruin it for the rest of us.

But in general, I'd rather have robust self-esteem than not. My sister and I went through MH crises at the same time. Except her low self-esteem meant suicidal ideation, and my arrogance meant that I knew that I damn well deserved better treatment, and the time to heal myself.

JanesBlond · 31/08/2023 17:18

I wonder if people who are a bit sensitive about their own circumstances are more likely to find others boastful, whereas those that are more secure (eg financially/romantically) wouldn’t notice passing mentions of things as much? Likewise perhaps confidence is more likely to be perceived as arrogance by those who are less confident themselves?

MsMarple · 31/08/2023 17:19

Sometimes people notice and are really annoyed by traits in others that they have themselves.

Other people might let those same things wash over them and not be bothered as much.

AnImaginaryCat · 31/08/2023 17:21

In my observation people who seem to find a high number of people "arrogant" are actually, for want of a better description, actually jealous or envious in some way of the so called arrogant person.

Obviously arrogant people exist and express it in the way they speak or act exist. However, when a person finds a lot of people arrogant, the assessment of their arrogance seems to be based on them having things or being able to do something.

Is that makes sense 😁.

Layinwait · 31/08/2023 17:21

@thecatsthecats you are confusing confidence and self belief… with arrogance

Verv · 31/08/2023 17:22

Thinking about it, I don't come across them very often.
I think most people are normal to modest, even those I've come across who could spend my years wage on a fortnights holiday.

Id probably question if those who came across that type regularly might be being a bit on the oversensitive/looking to complain side.

Tapasita · 31/08/2023 17:36

Because some people just love love love the sound of their own voice. Particularly at work. Particularly in meetings where they can regurgitate their opinion again and again (not that everyone else hasn’t heard it a thousand times over.) Not only are people like this terribly boring but they embarrassingly lack self-awareness and I spend a lot of time cringing for them as they (once again) take centre stage. Mostly men (all levels) but sometimes women in very high positions.

Just shut up, no-one marks you

Tapasita · 31/08/2023 17:41

I will also add their propensity to speak endlessly means they never listen. So they are wilfully deaf. But that doesn’t matter because they fucking know everything anyway - can you guess these folk irritate the hell out of me????

TorroFerney · 31/08/2023 17:41

I worked with one. It was very much because most people are not that I (and others) found it so jarring.

There’s a theory that you are most offended or critical of things you wish you could do/qualities you’d like to have so you may be right .

I'd say that's them being a twat rather than being full of themselves or arrogant Grin

A few years ago there was a poster on a forum I used and I found her so bossy and opinionated, even though she knew what she was talking about. She annoyed the hell out of me until one day I realised that she reminded me of me. I laughed my head off and we got on really well after that. Sometimes what's annoying in someone is actually an aspect of ourselves.

ReginaRegina · 31/08/2023 18:05

Indeed!

hylian · 31/08/2023 18:11

I've never met anyone I liked who was described as someone who 'tells it like it is'.

In my experience that means they are gobby and opinionated, and share their unsolicited opinions with everyone.

No one 'tells it like it is' - we only have our own perspective and subjective opinions on the world.
