and I definitely wouldn't say it is a large portion! I couldn't believe. I know prices have gone up but it's only potatoes fgs.

@TenderDandelions I saw that, I think the owners had posted it in their shop window to explain them having to put prices up. I don’t think you can really moan at a fiver for a large portion of chips.

Meltinthemiddle · 31/08/2023 17:17

Can't really use the saying 'Cheap as chips' anymore!

Well it depends on what counts as a large portion.

As anyone else also that alot of restaurants have also put prices up, and reduced portions/quality of ingredients.

It's like that absolutely everywhere. Brexit, inflation and staffing problems are all contributing to rising costs.

RisingSunn · 31/08/2023 17:18

My local chip shop was explaining the price of their oil shot up because of the crisis in Ukraine. Then throw in the huge energy hikes.

Make them at home and see how much they cost you.
Include your time.
Oil
Energy cost
Potatoes

Costs of everything have gone up, chips are no exception.

You can buy bags of frozen chips or make them yourself if you're that outraged.

The price of a bag of frozen chips has risen loads too.

Georgieporgie29 · 31/08/2023 17:22

I’m getting my daughter some after her sport tonight so I’ll see how much they are here in the north west.
would love to know if @QuitMoaning chip shop is nearby as would love to support a family business

Mamai90 · 31/08/2023 17:26

That's a lot cheaper than local to me. We ordered a portion of curry chips, a chicken burger and a can of coke last night and it came to over £20 including delivery. Chips were £6.99 and burger was £8.20, I did think that was expensive but £4 odds I would consider to be very reasonable.

TheFormidableMrsC · 31/08/2023 17:29

My son and I had a rare chippy tea a few weeks ago. I nearly fell over when I ordered it. One small cod. 6 chicken nuggets. One small portion of chips to share. SEVENTEEN QUID. I'm in Hertfordshire. So that'll be the last chippy tea we have 🤷🏻‍♀️

Blueberrycreampie · 31/08/2023 17:30

Cooking them yourselves isn't a lot cheaper- frozen chips are much dearer now and electricity for the oven is probably not worth it just for chips. I suppose a deep fat fryer/air fryer would make it cheaper. I know a couple of potato farmers and believe me they are having difficulty making ends meet, and a few have given up! As others have said coats have gone through the roof for restaurants and takeaways, and hospitality in general of course. I don't mind paying a bit extra for what is essentially a treat now and again.

BackToOklahoma · 31/08/2023 17:31

Some people would moan no matter what I suppose. Costs have increased hugely as has been said on the thread, if they don’t pass that on to the customer, they won’t survive. I like to have the option of our local chip shop so I’m happy to pay.

TenderDandelions · 31/08/2023 17:33

Using the example I gave before, just the utilities costs have gone from £21,256 in 2021 to £71,007 in 2023.

If they passed on just that increase to customers in the same proportions if a large portion of chips cost £3 in 2021, it would now cost £7.02!

So, £5 and a smaller portion size seems fair to me.

Specialtoes · 31/08/2023 17:34

A cup of coffee's £3+....

Allthecatseverywhereallatonce · 31/08/2023 17:40

I was moaning about paying £4.20 in Brighton, not even a large portion but, they were the best chips I have eaten but, just shy of £20 for our family of 4 😯

PietariKontio · 31/08/2023 17:45

I have no strong opinions on the price of chips, I vaguely think they're no worse than any other COL price increases. However, I think you're BU cos I've now ordered chips via Uber, and it's obviously not my fault for having no self-control ;)

Oakbeam · 31/08/2023 17:51

It seems extortionate to me, and it makes me feel really old.

I sometimes used to buy a large portion of chips on the way home from school… 5p.

We are in Hertfordshire.

I don’t think it is us as think it would be less than £17. But, sadly, not that much less.

Unless on a delivery app, we lose 50% of everything on delivery apps (20% to Vat and 30% to the apps). One person regularly orders large chips from us and they are paying just under £10 for them after the delivery apps costs and delivery charges. We get about £3 of it. Madness.

Bonjovispjs · 31/08/2023 17:51

£11.25 for a portion of fish and chips on Brighton pier last week, I was shocked. Huge portion though, me and 2 kids had one portion between us and still didn't eat all the chips.

tigger1001 · 31/08/2023 17:54

Not just chippies. But small businesses.

Was speaking to our local butchers who was commenting about how the electric bill was crippling him. Needs to put up his prices but that will likely mean some will go elsewhere as it won't be affordable.

I think it's hugely understated how the hike in energy bills has affected businesses. And I think many have struggled along in the hot energy prices would fall more dramatically than they have but now feel they have no option but to increase their prices.

Add in the increase in costs of other things and all of a sudden things that were affordable are no longer.

Blackbyrd · 31/08/2023 17:55

It's £5.45 for a cheese and tomato toastie from Costa, £3.10 for a chocolate cookie for context. I think it's really important when funds are limited that we choose to support small local businesses who pay their taxes and are invested in the community

OnAMidnightTrainToGeorgia · 31/08/2023 17:58

We just don't do takeout anymore

At all

Can't justify the cost balanced with 'supporting small businesses'

Completely agree. I can't remember the last time I went to a Costa or any similar chain. Much rather support my local businesses.

PickoftheMix · 31/08/2023 18:12

I paid over £7 last week for 2 measly portions of chips. I see why they need to put the price up but it's all just become too unaffordable now so sadly I won't be buying them again. That goes for lots of takeaway places.

Most fish and chip shops are small family businesses, so you'll still be doing that even if your local ones are not run by @QuitMoaning
