and I definitely wouldn't say it is a large portion! I couldn't believe. I know prices have gone up but it's only potatoes fgs.

I'd love some hot chips now to ward off this drizzle

Ooh me too! 😋😋. I'd like to get them from @QuitMoaning 's family chippy too - sounds like they are doing heroic work to keep a valuable local service /local employer on the road against dreadful odds.

FcukTheDay · 31/08/2023 16:47

5.50 here for a large portion. To be fair, it is actually a large portion that will feed my four children with an accompiment.

People pay more for a coffee!

This is a great point. I paid £4 for a brownie the other day!

JSmithIloveyou · 31/08/2023 16:50

Between £1.30 and £3 here in Yorkshire.

Your starting point is £3.90 because 79p goes straight to the Government for VAT.

Now work.out cost of potato, lactating, oil, power to cook, wages, and the overheads to be covered rent, rates, staff wages, water, insurances etc

Then perhaps there will be a little left over for the owner to live.on for kindly taking his time saving you time because you can't be borthered to cook.

Lactating?

No milk in our product. I know it is autocorrect but I genuinely don’t know what you meant 🤣

Thank you for mentioning VAT. Most people forget that 20% of almost everything in our shop goes to the government in VAT.

Takoneko · 31/08/2023 16:51

Local chippies are clearly struggling. Costs have gone up, but there’s also the impact of the drop off in sales volumes. There used to be queues around the block for the local chippy on a Friday night when I was a kid. That’s just not the case now. There’s so much competition out there. I don’t begrudge paying the prices at our chippy because I know it’s tough for them, and it’s still considerably cheaper than any other local takeaway option apart from the ubiquitous North London chicken shops.

Also, was that the price paid walking into a chippy or was it ordered from a delivery app? If it’s a delivery app, you have to remember that prices on apps are higher because the app takes a portion of the food price as well as the delivery and service fees.

Ohmylovejune · 31/08/2023 16:52

The lactating was packaging!

🥰
We employ 8 people so we need to keep the business going or that is 8 more people out of work.

coxesorangepippin · 31/08/2023 16:53

Doesn't seem too bad

How many did it feed

Idratherbepaddleboarding · 31/08/2023 16:57

I’m gutted that we can’t afford to support our local chippy anymore as the owner is lovely but we just can’t afford it.

CherryMaDeara · 31/08/2023 16:58

QuitMoaning · 31/08/2023 16:35

This!

I am fed up of people having a go at Fish and chip shops. Just for clarity our energy bill has gone from £7,000 per year to £28,000 per year. Potatoes from £8 to £20, fish prices have trebled.
We know of four local shops about to hand back their keys as they just cannot make it work.
We are lucky I have an unconnected job as my partner has cut his salary down to minimum (and working 90 hours a week atm) to ensure the business continues and staff are paid.
it is not profiteering, it is genuinely scary. We hope to limp along for a few years and then get out of the trade.
it was always a staple meal, now it is becoming a luxury but we have now choice. 😢

It’s madness to limp along. Get out now!

Motnight · 31/08/2023 16:58

We pay £5 for a very large portion of chips that feeds 2 greedy adults with some left over.

tigger1001 · 31/08/2023 17:00

Ohmylovejune · 31/08/2023 16:45

Lactating???? Lol

Obviously it's not reasonable to adjust costs for that!

Packaging

This made me giggle 😂😂

Knew it was a typo but couldn't figure out what it was supposed to be

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 31/08/2023 17:01

I watched something the other day where a woman was mugged for her chips, by seagulls on Brighton beach. She had paid £8 per portion for them, so the seagulls got £16 quids worth of chips!

TenderDandelions · 31/08/2023 17:02

There's a picture doing the rounds on social media of a Scottish chip shop explaining their price rises with the following comparisons:

  • gas cost 2021 - £3,746
  • gas cost 2023 - £19,997
  • electricity cost 2021 - £7,510
  • electricity cost 2023 - £28,010
  • cooking oil cost 2021 - £10,000
  • cooking oil cost 2023 - £23,000

Be grateful for £4.69!

Our local chippy is £4.85 for medium chips and £5.85 for large. Medium is perfect for me, but I have no idea how DH devours the large portion - it fills a 12 inch dinner plate!

Hufflepods · 31/08/2023 17:03

Seems reasonable for a large portion really. I wouldn’t expect it for much less than a £5.

andymary · 31/08/2023 17:05

It's not just the chips... £4.50 for a Pukka Pie or Pastie at ours!

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 31/08/2023 17:07

32 quid for fish and chips and 2 cans in Brixham, miniscule portions too and not particularly nice either.

Janieforever · 31/08/2023 17:09

If you wanted just potatoes op you bought the wrong thing, you can buy them much cheaper.

cooked chips though involve someone being paid to buy them, take the delivery, storage, peeling them, chipping them, oil, cooking them, salt and vinegar, wrapping, someone to cook, someone to serve, the shop rent and taxes, the utlilites, the salaries for all of them inc any manager.

and once they add all that up, they need to work out how much they need to sell them for, based on average sales, to pay all the bills and make a small profit. Hopefully.

unlikelychump · 31/08/2023 17:09

And now we are having chips!

DinnaeFashYersel · 31/08/2023 17:09

£4 where I live in Scotland. (It's a huge portion mind)

Like others have said it's

Chips
Oil
Rent
Rates
Wages
NI
Light
Heat
Cleaning supplies
Maintenance
Equipment
Insurance
Website
Bank charges
And lots of other things too

ZeusandClio · 31/08/2023 17:10

£6.20 here for large chips 🥴, Hampshire chippy. Huge portion, delicious, family business. So much better than cooking them myself and so much nicer!

Djmaggie · 31/08/2023 17:12

I was shocked until I read some of the other replies. £2.10 in our local chippy (NW city)

BlueBlubbaWhale · 31/08/2023 17:14

Process are crazy atm. I wonder if we will see a return to more people making meals, puddings, cakes etc from scratch?

Meltinthemiddle · 31/08/2023 17:14

It's crazy! This is a local takeaway. It fed two of us but that was only because I brought a chicken curry and rice from the Chinese to go with it (can't remove the price of that before you ask!) On its own probability would have fed one adult. I was just shocked for something that used to be a cheap takeaway. Same as I am shocked by the price of bread, milk and baked beans!

As anyone else also that alot of restaurants have also put prices up, and reduced portions/quality of ingredients.
