Has anyone just quit a job before?

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 09:09

What are/were the ramifications of doing so?

Im waiting for my wages to be paid in tomorrow and I’m quitting.

AIBU for worrying about repercussions?? What can they do?

Do you mean you don’t intend to work your notice?

Tell them you’re joining a competitor, and they will
possibly put you on garden leave. Or do you have holiday you can use instead of working notice?

Good luck

Hecate01 · 30/08/2023 09:12

Go on the sick for the duration of your notice period.

Rachie1973 · 30/08/2023 09:12

Nope. But I’m thinking about it. I love my job but so many complications at home now I feel overwhelmed at my responsibilities. I might work notice and go.

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 09:24

I don’t even know what my notice period is as I’m still on probation and the handbook only says the notice period for after probation.

Only once. Walked out during a shift. The relief was palpable.

No real ramifications. They did try to tell me I owed them £23 for the time not worked (no week in hand) but I helpfully pointed out that they owed me £600 accrued holiday pay.

BookishBabe · 30/08/2023 09:38

I did.
They made me miserable, I cried every day and I couldn't cope anymore.
I had a few days off with stress and when I returned they'd planned a meeting with me and 6 mangers. Definitely overkill!
I quickly wrote my resignation and handed it in at the start of the meeting. I was also on probation as it was a newish job.
They accepted my resignation right there and then, told me they didn't want me to work my notice, and gor security to escort me out the building and told me not to look at anyone or speak to anyone.

It was a minimum wage job in a call centre.

namechanger563 · 30/08/2023 09:44

I was buying a house and so had to wait until it completed, which was also on pay day. I took time off for my house move so left my work laptop/phone etc in the desk draw and called in as soon as I could. It was such an awful toxic place, I couldn't do another day there.

I didn't have another job lined up but did get something quite quickly.

PinkCherryBlossoms · 30/08/2023 09:46

I did but I was temping so not the same.

What is it you're worried about in particular OP?

Magenta65 · 30/08/2023 09:48

My DP did, no repercussions as in a probation period etc. paid up his wages and he left but don’t expect a reference

minipie · 30/08/2023 09:48

If you’re on probation then there probably isn’t a notice period (for them or you) or not much of one, do you have a contract which spells this out?

The main ramification is that you will need to explain why you stayed such a short time to future potential employers, who might think it looks flakey.

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 09:49

I don’t know really I’ve just never quit a job before. I want to quit right now but worried they will hold my pay so I’m hanging on till tomorrow but I’m just so done.

Taketurn · 30/08/2023 09:50

If you're on probation, there isn't a notice period. Just let your manager know that you don't intend to continue.

Allschoolsareartschools · 30/08/2023 09:51

Dd did. Call centre for a large high street store, she lasted 8 days then went in & spoke to a supervisor & handed in her resignation. They were pretty nice about it & she left immediately. It just wasn't for her.
She got a new job almost immediately afterwards & went from strength to strength. Sometimes it just doesn't work out in a job & it's best to cut your losses. Be honest & tell them you're going though.

CornishGem1975 · 30/08/2023 09:51

I quit, it was a shit job, bad management. I say 'quit', I handed my notice in and was willing to work it but they didn't want me to and then said they were speaking to their lawyers? It was a start-up run by kids basically. Nothing happened. I applied for other jobs straightaway, had an interview with a week and got the job. Best thing I ever did.

Funkyslippers · 30/08/2023 09:52

Yes I did. I couldn't stay and be bullied any more. I went off sick then wrote a letter to the manager resigning and explained my reasons. He wrote back and was very kind about it. Nothing else happened, I think I was probably on probation

Like as punishment you mean? Tell them you're shopping them to HMRC for breaching NMW laws if they do. Should concentrate their minds a bit.

Whichwhatnow · 30/08/2023 09:57

The only time I've quit was an absolutely horrific job with an awful culture. I clearly didn't fit in there (because I'm not a backstabbing arse 😆). I just put my notice in after three months and they waved me off with three months of gardening leave. I don't think anyone wants to keep working with someone who clearly hates working there do they?

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 09:59

I’m working from home and they’re still making life hell. I just really can’t afford to not get paid so I’m really anxious about not just telling them to get fucked right this second.

I walked out of my weekend job at 18 and they rang my mum and told her 🤣

Like others have said, just call in sick tomorrow, you’ve eaten a dodgy prawn sandwich which will then turn into flu, by which time next pay check will be due and paid!

VeridicalVagabond · 30/08/2023 10:04

I walked out of my old management job after being absolutely sick of the appalling way I was treated. Literally threw my keys at my boss and left mid shift.

Emailed my notice in as soon as I got home, plus a huge complaint about my boss and his behaviour, then went on the sick for my notice period. Nothing happened, I still got paid.

I didn't have a job to go to but I'd just had enough.

What is it you're worried about?

Hecate01 · 30/08/2023 10:04

If you are still on probation it's normally a weeks notice. A good dose of the flu/covid will see you out for a week.

FunkyMonks · 30/08/2023 10:08

I did just before my maternity leave was due to finish informed HR I wouldn't be returning I did rightfully have to pay back some of the maternity pay but that was nothing in comparison for finally getting the relief and happiness in knowing I was never going back to that toxic environment ever again.

TheSkull · 30/08/2023 10:13

Walked out of loads in the past. All high profile public sector jobs. No regrets. Things always work out

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 10:20

I probably will have to pay some holiday back? As I’ve only been there 2 months. I don’t know I’m so stressed I can’t even think right.
