Has anyone just quit a job before?

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 09:09

What are/were the ramifications of doing so?

Im waiting for my wages to be paid in tomorrow and I’m quitting.

AIBU for worrying about repercussions?? What can they do?

Once. Walked out and had to endure the finance director screaming at me down the phone that evening, but the sheer relief that I wasn't going back there and being stuck in an office with someone who said 'fuck'every other word made up for it. Nor would I have to sit there fielding her IMs, then the emails when I didn't leap to answer the IMs and then the calls when I hadn't answered IMs and emails because I was trying to do my work.

Should've got the message when she interrupted the interview to take calls and then said 'well, do you want the job or not?'

MrsRoxkwell · 30/08/2023 11:04

I have 2 job interviews on Friday so I’m going to call in sick anyway. Tempted to hand my notice in right now aaaaggh.

I quit, it was a shit job, bad management. I say 'quit', I handed my notice in and was willing to work it but they didn't want me to and then said they were speaking to their lawyers? It was a start-up run by kids basically. Nothing happened. I applied for other jobs straightaway, had an interview with a week and got the job. Best thing I ever did.

What on earth did they think their lawyers would be doing about you leaving their employment? Catch you in a large net and bring you back? 😂

CornishGem1975 · 30/08/2023 11:09

Haha maybe @Mmhmmn I don't know, I think they thought I was in some sort of breach of contract. How dare I leave!

I probably will have to pay some holiday back? As I’ve only been there 2 months. I don’t know I’m so stressed I can’t even think right.

If you've taken more holiday than you're entitled to pro rata for the time that you've worked, they can ask you to repay that.

Pragmatically, if you've taken a full year's worth on annual leave and only been employed for a couple of months, they might, but if it's only a day or so they could decide the admin involved is more hassle than the sum they'd get back.

ManchesterLu · 30/08/2023 11:27

Don't just quit, hand in your notice and then get signed off sick with stress. Ultimately the same result but looks better on record.

lastminutewednesday · 30/08/2023 11:48

Just hand in your notice. They have to pay you-and it will already have been processed anyway. Then you can be sick or not for the weeks notice period-but as a manager when someone hands in their notice during probation it's more of a surprise if they show up for their last week tbh.

lastminutewednesday · 30/08/2023 11:49

If you have taken holiday whilst there more than you've acfried they may well ask for it to be paid back. But they probably won't have time to take it out of this pay packet.

Minfilia · 30/08/2023 12:15

Just give them a weeks notice then self certify as sick for the week.

Strictly speaking it's a breach of most employment contracts to just quit without notice. In theory they can sue for the extra costs the breach incurs. In practice it's pointless.

EvilElsa · 30/08/2023 12:33

I did, but it was constructive dismissal as the owner was awful, a bully and was treating me in a way that meant I just couldn't work. I'd worked there for over 3 years and he just got worse and worse and on my last day before I quit our relationship had broken down to such a degree we didn't say one word to each other. I worked out my shift, put my keys in a drawer and sent an email when I got home stating I wouldn't be returning. I was backed by ACAS and won a case against him.

DoloresOnTheDottedLine · 30/08/2023 12:40

Why not hand in your notice immmediately - they will still pay you tomorrow (the payments will be set up to go already and you can’t not pay someone just because they’ve handed in notice). You’ll feel better for having taken some action right now. You can then see what tomorrow brings - if they expect you to work notice and are still being awful, then you can either refuse to work notice or come down with the flu….
You could spend this afternoon just writing your handover so you’re ready to drop everything and run depending on how they behave from now onwards.

greyhairnomore · 30/08/2023 14:09

Yes. I finished a horrendous night shift and phoned my boss and said I wasn't going back.
Nothing happened.

greyhairnomore · 30/08/2023 14:09

Actually she asked me to go in for a chat but I said no.

Whatafustercluck · 30/08/2023 14:12

I did this recently (mid August) but did everything I could to secure a financial settlement which included 3 months PILON. I'd had enough. I was off sick for over a month earlier this year but in truth had been very unhappy for a while.

Anyway, the settlement figure gives me a cushion for a few months. I don't think I'd have just quit with no safety net while I find a new job.

Whatafustercluck · 30/08/2023 14:14

Yeah, should have said that my employer paid me off because they knew I could have them for constructive dismissal and breach of contract.

PumpkinPie2016 · 30/08/2023 14:15

I did but I was only 17 at the time. It was a waitressing job in a hotel.
Not my first job but the only one I left in this manner.
The owner/manager was an arse and I just got sick of him. Just told him one day that he was an idiot and I was going and not coming back. He had the nerve to ask how much notice I was giving - just told him none.

I just don't put it on my CV. But that may be different if you have been there longer/it would leave a gap. I was a student so it didn't really matter.

Probably not my finest hour but in my defence, he was a twat.

Maddy70 · 30/08/2023 14:23

I have twice once my boss offered me a huge increase in salary to come back
The other time they didn't pay me my last month's salary in lue of notice. Fair enough

Timetoflower22 · 30/08/2023 16:01

I did. Walked out of recruitment in a toxic environment with a horrendous boss. Walked out and told them where to stick it

lenalemonade · 30/08/2023 17:13

Once and the psychopath who owned the company went crazy ,threatened to sue me ,chucked stuff around his office like a giant toddler having a tantrum .I initiallly froze then ran out and drove round the corner where I cried for about an hour before I drove home .
Bizarrely ,he texted me next day to offer me a massive pay rise and money to treat myself to a weeks holiday before I returned if we could draw a line under the whole episode !-that would be a no !!
Point is ,bad as it was -when I think about it now I burst out laughing when I think of my shocked face witnessing this 6 foot idiot destroying his own office 😂
