Post office panic

BaaCode · 29/08/2023 18:53

Last year, my husband bought me an expensive laptop from Amazon.
A couple of days ago, it decided to die a death.
He contacted Amazon and they said to return it for a full refund, using the returns label they will send him.
Printed the label off, packaged up the parcel and went to the post office to send it back.
The post office scanned the label and told me that my husband would get either an email or a text as proof of postage. It's my husband's Amazon account.
Now, several hours later, he's had no email or text to say it's been posted, he's checked junk mail, his Amazon account and nothing.
Now I'm panicking.
Would I be unreasonable to go back to the post office tomorrow morning and demand proof of postage? Would they even be able to do this? It's a small quiet post office, rather than a large busy one. Although they don't know me, I use it often so I'm sure the assistant would remember me.
I'm panicking in case the parcel doesn't reach Amazon and I've no proof of postage.
Has anyone else had this situation?
Help please 🙏

Didn't they give you a receipt at the post office???

Natureswick · 29/08/2023 18:56

Can you use the details on the label you had to print to track the parcel? This will tell you if its been scanned into the system.
I wouldn't panic just yet but go back to the post office tomorrow to ask if you want to.

The return label will be attached to an email somewhere. Or in your Amazon account. Open it on the screen and look for the tracking code. You may be able to track it through the Royal Mail website.

No, he just said that an email or text will be sent as proof of postage.
I thought it was a bit odd, but in my defence I've never returned anything to Amazon, so I took it as normal.

Oh, that's a good idea, I'll try that.
Thank you.

Should I wait until say, the end of the trading day tomorrow to see if I get the same email?
God, I can't believe how stupid I am sometimes.

If you saw it being scanned you've nothing to worry about. Amazon will already know it's in the system. Just let the computers talk to each other, you'll get your refund automatically soon.

BarbieKew · 29/08/2023 19:01

Don’t panic, pretty sure it doesn’t show on Amazon’s system until it leaves the post office or parcel shop. Amazon scan it upon collection and it should show on your account then.

BaaCode · 29/08/2023 19:05

@KrisAkabusi and @BarbieKew
Thank you, I feel a little more happy now you've said that.
Maybe the email will arrive once the postie has collected the parcels from the post office.
I'll try the returns label code just the same too as someone upthread said.
God, I'm chewing my way through polo mints at a rate of knots here in my panic

I've returned things to Amazon several times and through multiple post offices, I have always been given a paper receipt from the postoffice and then received a separate one from Amazon very shortly after. In cases where I've requested the refund as credit I've had the refund within 2 hours of dropping it off at the post office

KrisAkabusi · 29/08/2023 19:14

I don't understand why you're obsessed with getting a receipt. It has been scanned so it's in the system. Amazon themselves will now have confirmation of that. You don't actually need to do anything.

Silverdogblue · 29/08/2023 19:15

Does demanding usually get you your way?

BaaCode · 29/08/2023 19:18

@KrisAkabusi I know it's daft, but I'm just worried that it will go missing and I've no proof of postage. It's just me panicking.

@Silverdogblue no. Perhaps demand was too strong a word.

Thank you. This is where I'm panicking because they didn't give me a receipt and there hasn't been an email from Amazon yet.
I posted it around 13.30 this afternoon.

Sounds dodgy to me. You should have been given a receipt anyway. I'd go back tomorrow. If they deny it ask for cctv evidence.

Usually when I return Amazon stuff once I've dropped it off I get an email immediately.

And I'm running out of polo mints!

I hate this paperless system that is becoming more and more common.

If his email is a gmail account tell him to check his promotions folder as that is where these things tend to go to now in my experience.

snalapaj · 29/08/2023 19:42

Yes 'demand' away

Because sadly some companies unless you can provide a paper receipt will not accept that you returned it even if it has been scanned.

I returned two quite pricy items of clothing to a major chain using the tracked postage label they emailed me. It was scanned by the Post Office and they gave me a receipt which I thought I had put away safely. Which I didn't get my refund I emailed them but they claimed they hadn't it and to send me a copy of my postal receipt. Couldn't find it but was able to see a copy of the tracking label email in my inbox, tracked that and it was delivered. They still requested paper receipt of postage. Thankfully found it in my desk drawer in work a week later. Sent it in and refund issued within 3 hours

Jibo · 29/08/2023 20:13

It's possibke that with high value items like this, Amazon have to receive and check it before confirming receipt. Otherwise you could send them back a brick in a box. Don't panic yet.

Natureswick · 29/08/2023 21:59

Have you used the tracking number on the label to track it yet?

GuinnessBird · 29/08/2023 22:01

What does it say when you click on returns within your Amazon account?

User174398521 · 29/08/2023 22:13

If it was a small post office the collection may have been very early so it missed it, sometimes you don't get notifications until it's collected (this is with other retailers so Amazon may be the same). I would give it until tomorrow afternoon as it will be collected by then.

rainbowunicorn · 29/08/2023 22:17

Have you actually checked messages in the amazon account or tried tracking it?
I think you are getting in a state over nothing to be honest. I doubt the man in the post office has stolen your parcel.
