...to think teachers DO get paid over the holidays?

It doesn't make sense to me.

Some people say teachers don't get paid over the holidays. They are paid, they say, for 40 weeks, but their money is aggregated over 52 weeks and paid monthly.

What does that even mean? How is it (practically) any different to being paid (less per week) for 52 weeks?

Budgets. Typing while making a coffee. In school. Where I've been all day, in my holidays. Was also in 3 days last week and the one before, dealing with exam stuff. Just love the long holidays 😂

My mother is a teacher.
They get paid for the days they work but the money is spread over the year.
And of course like every employee they are entitled to a min statutory holiday allowance as well which they are forced to take during school holiday times.
So no they don't get paid for holidays (accept the stat ones they would be entitled too if working another over job)

Yes I don’t doubt there are other professions that work over time for free - maybe into their lunch hour or a bit longer after their 5pm finish. But 12 days in a 6 week period. That’s without any additional work done before school, lunch, evenings, weekends and other half term breaks. I think if I calculated my actual working hours over the year against my wage I would be paid below minimum wage!!

A reply to much up thread Teachers are not paid hourly.

I am. It's on my wage slip (or electronic equivalent).

I have worked in a few countries and it's pretty much the same. You work up holiday pay. If you only work less than a while year, eg half term of the summer term, you won't get paid for the whole summer holiday, if even you are carrying on to next year. I know!

TBF, it can occasionally benefit teachers- if you e.g. take up a maternity post and start at an odd time, you'd still get paid during the next school holiday, which you might not if you had 2 weeks holiday booked, say, 2 months into starting a different new job. But that's true whether you're part time or full time.

As a supply teacher you might start at the beginning of September, and finish at the end of July, and not get paid at all for the 6 week holidays.

I am paid to work directed hours of 1265 hours over an academic year spread over 195 days.
That is what my salary is for ,195 days plus legal holiday entitlement. So I think that's 28 days?

If my hours/days were to increase my salary would also need to increase to reflect this.

My salary is paid split into 12 equal monthly payments.

So no I do not receive extra "paid" holidays.
It really is not that hard to understand.

Because a full time equivalent job (i.e. 48 weeks + 4 weeks paid hol) with similar responsibilities and workload as an average classroom teacher would earn significantly more than £30/£40 k. It's only considerable as a justifiable salary if its only renumeration for 39 weeks.

It depends where you live though. If you're in Cornwall where the average salary is £31k then a starting salary of £28k, soon rising to over £30k seems quite good. Whereas if you're in London where the average salary is £52k and the London weighting doesn't nearly cover the cost of additional living and travel costs then it's not great.

@fuckityfuckityfuckfuck they used to, but no more. There is no certain progression any more for doctors to get into a speciality position and they can end up on £19 for quite a while as an F3. Even if they get speciality training they won't earn more than £55,000 for another 6 years. And when they finally make consultant, if they do, they will earn £66,000. After potentially 13+ years out of Uni. Gone are the days of a massive guaranteed income and pension.
It's why so many are leaving abroad. Rotational training sucks, the pay sucks, the NHS management sucks. V v sad.

No, but you don't get to choose to sacrifice your holiday for more money in most other jobs. It's not unique to teachers.

Looking at my job contract, I am contracted to work 1725 hours a year - my daily hours x the days I have to work. I work many more hours than this without overtime etc.

Teachers are contracted to work 1265 hours a year (and I know work many more hours on top).

But why do you need to constantly explain the holiday thing all the time. You have an annual salary. It's just pedantics to bang on about the holiday when every other person in a professional job just gets an annual salary, the same as you. And is expected to work out of their contracted hours, again, like you. You really aren't as hard done by as you (generic you, not you personally) seem to think!

It’s not teachers banging on about holidays , it is people who aren’t teachers who bang on about holidays.

Parttime teachers get 100% of the holidays off, but only 80% (or whatever) of the pay.
Same as them having their PPA and pension contributions reduced.

Teachers get paid IN the holidays, but not FOR the holidays.

They are paid for 195 days work per year.

These days happen in term time.

But their salary (to make things easier for the Local Authority) is divided into 12 equal monthly segments.

In fact, their salary could be divided into (approximately) 9 months, and then be unpaid for (approximately) 3 months as this would better reflect their contracted hours.

The average (mean) salary in London is skewed heavily by the monster salaries people take home in the City etc. The median salary in London is £32,988 a year (£2,749 per month), so a teacher's starting salary (could be at 22) is close to that.

I used to be a payroll manager, not in education. I paid staff who took six weeks off in the summer and two at Easter and then used their paid holidays for the other school holidays. So we reduced their pay by 8 weeks so take their annual salary, divide it by 52 and then multiply it by 44, so they were paid for 44 weeks a year but we paid it in 12 payments. So yes they got money in the bank once a month like everyone else but they collected less money, equivalent to 8 weeks wages over the year. So they weren't paid for the summer and Easter holidays but they did actually get money in the bank. I hope that makes sense.

You are not only paid to work directed hours. You are paid to carry out the responsibilities of your role, including but not limited to directed time of up to 1265 hours. The STPCD is very clear that you are expected to work hours in addition to directed time.

Yes and no. Our contracts are weird. Teachers are paid for holidays, but can’t be required to work in them. We are salaried workers and our salary covers pay our 195 working days, our statutory holiday entitlement and any other reasonable hours needed to do our jobs at a time and place of our choosing.

Teaching unions have different advice for supply teachers to ensure they get paid whatever portion they are due of their statutory holiday entitlement of 5.6 weeks, but that’s not relevant for teachers employed directly in schools because we have a contract that agreed a certain amount of pay for a certain number of days and a certain amount of holiday.

People who say things like “I’ve been marking in my unpaid holiday” are wrong. Pay for marking is part of the “any other hours” bit that we are paid for.

However, people who say things like “There’s too many school holidays, they should be cut down” are also wrong if they think that can be done without a renegotiation of teacher contracts and salaries. Teachers could reasonably expect the annual salary to rise if their working days increased. A reasonable salary for 195 working days is different to a reasonable salary for say 220 working days.

But it's somewhat irrelevant what the contracted hours are because that applies to everyone

I take a job on £30k per annum. It comes with 30 days leave so a straight 6 weeks.

I get paid £2500 per month (regardless of how many hours I work in that month or I am on holiday)

My contract states 40 hours but generally I do 42/43 for the 46 weeks I am at work.

As a teacher, I am contracted to 32.5 ish hour working week for 39 weeks.

I receive £2500 per month. Regardless of whether I am teaching/ prepping/ or sitting at home on hols.

I get that it's done to even out payments but that fact remains that whether you are teaching, prepping or sitting on a sun lounger in Benidorm in august you are still getting that £2500 in your salary each month so whilst you are on holiday you are still receiving payment.

My example above, that individual would be contracted to work 1840 hours in the 46 weeks they are at work; that's 50% more than a teacher for the same amount of money each month.

I worked in a construction / design role and it was the same 37.5hrs a week plus whatever needed to get the job done.
My partner works in the same industry (design consultant) he gets paid for any additional hours.
I worked in a different firm for a while I got TOIL for additional hours.

You then realize the firms that don't pay you for your additional hours or at a minimum TOIL are the ones you don't work for.

People should get paid for the hours they work, unless they are taking the mick

It’s parents who always go on about school holidays because they are fed up having to actually look after their own children and plan childcare. The point is that they don’t get paid for these holidays, they get an annual salary split across 12 months. If people want the kids in school more then they will need to be paid more. Same stories spouted out all the time about teachers. Teacher strike for pay- ‘ffs I couldn’t do the job but what a cheek with all the holidays they get. As if the kids need more time off when they are constantly off for holidays.’

As far as I’m aware most jobs get 4 weeks paid holiday entitlement. Yes there are other jobs that have the same set up but then they don’t have a whole bunch of people complaining that they dared take a 4 week holiday in the summer.

Erm, not many people with 4 weeks paid holiday take a 4 week summer holiday! That 4 weeks off has to last the whole year!
