To be a bit disappointed I wasn't informed of results?

Pizzahut345 · 28/08/2023 14:08

I worked as a sessional A level teacher in a 6th form college until May 2023, for one academic year. Due to low subject intake for September 2023 I wouldn't be needed (but would be kept on the books). I handed in my notice in May as I ended up finding a permanent salaried job (this one was a 0 hours contract)
They understood and I left after the students' final day before exams.
My email account was deactivated a few days after, but I still had the teachers' address on my personal email.
Obviously results day has been and gone but I've no way of knowing how my former students did. I emailed the teachers but sadly they never replied.
It did hurt a bit, but that's how it is sometimes. Maybe it's a safeguarding thing? But I'm a recent member of staff not some random stranger, they couldn't even send a generic 'students did well' polite email.
Anyway, not sure if I'm being unreasonable, it would have been nice to know since I taught them for a year, but never mind.

I think as a courtesy they could let you know the results (but not appended to names of course). And if they’re busy they should be able to respond to an email request from you asking the same. I’m a data protection solicitor and can’t see any issues with this (unless of course it was a tiny class and you could somehow deduce who was who). I also used to be a university tutor who cared a lot about my students so I understand why you’d want to know how they got on (albeit you won’t be able to find out on an individual level if you’re no longer staff).

@Bellyblueboy

if it had just been the safeguarding element, then of course I expect to sign it, show Id, have a valid reason for being there - all of that but it was more the response from the reception team - it wasn’t just the protocols ( which I am 100% behind) it was more the shock that you have worked with these people all year, sat next to them in the staff room, supported them and then like a switch they treat you with a kind of hostility - it’s hard to explain how it affects you. It’s the removal of any sense of being a colleague when you see the person I guess

chopc · 28/08/2023 15:35

The OP taught these students. There is a genuine reason she would like access to their results. It doesn't automatically mean it would be a breach of GDPR rules to release the results.

@Pizzahut345 at the next school, perhaps write that into the contract - that if you leave under the same circumstance, you may be informed of results?

Well obviously there is no excuse for rudeness.

A school receptionist who can’t be civil to school guests should perhaps consider a career change.

SLT here.
This is a known scenario to me.
Is the same Subject Lead working at that place?
I'd contact them, assuming you had a decent working relationship, and explain exactly what you have said here (maybe briefer!). If your contract went well, they will probably be delighted to hear from you.
The question they will be able to answer is "did my cohort reach their target grades?"
Never mind people going on about gdpr on here, that's a bit histrionic tbh. As a short term zero hours teacher you need a professional portfolio and constant updates to your referees, and a simple factual statement on your cohort's achievement is something you need for your career, for applications and interviews. eg "In my last post 100% of my cohort achieved their target grades, plus two of them exceeded by a few points".
You probably don't get performance managed as a temp teacher, but that does not mean you have no right to gauge your performance in terms of results.
Frame it that way, as a professional query rather than a "fond attachment" and choose the right person who can give you a professional answer, and I don't see any problem with your question whatsoever.

Also, they might remember this level of interest and keep you on their books for future placements, who knows!

Beautiful3 · 28/08/2023 15:57

They wouldn't be allowed to tell you.

You’ve no right to students information after you leave the school. It’s the same as a teacher can’t just call up the office and ask about students they’ve taught too.

Technically this may be true but I’ve moved on from schools and been told results by colleagues/head of department. I wouldn’t have thought this was unusual.

Pizzahut345 · 28/08/2023 16:54

Thank you. As far as I know it's the same subject leader though who knows.
That's a good point regarding my professional portfolio, it would help a lot!
Anyway will see

But definitely a breach so I wouldn't ne broadcasting it

Perfect answer, I wish you were on my SLT!
If the OP had been paid until the end of the academic year there would be no issue about having the results, why is it suddenly wrong that having taught them for a year she might want to know the outcome?

I’d be unimpressed if a teacher who had no need to know my child’s results was given them.

But why would I have no need to know? I was their teacher 😂

What exactly do you need to know? You’ve said yourself it’s curiousity, that’s not a need!

No point debating it. It's really not a crime for a teacher to want to know how the students did that they taught all year! Would it be better if I didn't care. Anyway as I said no point debating any further.

Sorry I see you’ve said it’d be nice to know, that’s still not a need.

Pizzahut345 · 28/08/2023 19:05

I don't know, maybe, just maybe, I want to know if they achieved their target grades that I predicted? Whether I have helped them work hard enough? Am I doing well as a teacher? Wild, I know 😂
