To wear the same outfit every day?

FoodFann · 28/08/2023 09:02

I don’t do this, but the thought has crossed my mind. Men wear a suit every day, with a slightly different shirt and tie.

I’m not into clothes, although everyone says I look nice, I basically rotate a couple of dresses and a couple of trouser outfits for work. And casually, it’s just a couple of outfits too.

Would it be easier just to wear the same thing every day? Does anyone do this?

stevalnamechanger, no, they don’t shrink! They’re pure cotton, and I wash them at 40C. I usually buy them online from M and S, but if they don’t have my preferred v neck style, I buy from any website that does. I can’t bear synthetic fabrics (part of my autistic sensory issues) so pure cotton is a must, but I’m not fussy who the manufacturer is.

A colleague wears what looks like the same every day. I think she has multiple versions of items. Smart trousers, top, smart cardigan, ankle boots. All black, she has effortless style.

I would get bored with so little variety. I love black, but prefer a splash of colour somewhere in the mix - necklace, scarf, smart jacket/blazer or the current fave sandals which are yellow suede.

I think coming up with a formula for dressing or a capsule wardrobe of items that fit together in different permutations is good.

when I’m in a navy top wearing phase I get tired wearing same every day because I have so many of nearly same top so I would get bored by exact same outfit

You seem to be managing OK so far with just a few clothes, so I’d give it a go. It’s said they we only wear a third of our wardrobe so we might as well get rid of the rest & just wear our favorites to make us feel good.

I’ve been experimenting with the capsule for some years now, but I like new clothes. Although I manage the capsule for holidays, & have taken as few as 12 items. Life’s so much simpler not having to choose every day.

I don't do it but I'd love to. I worked in healthcare for some time and often wish we could wear scrubs all the time, or those traditional Chinese suits.
I now work in a profession where the dress code is smart casual and modest. There's quite a variation but it does seem that staff have a capsule wardrobe. You certainly notice when there's deviation. I sometimes wash a blouse that I've just worn that evening then wear it again the next day. I did used to wonder if people thought I had worn it twice but no-one cares. I think they'd notice with just one outfit though.
I knew a man that had many pairs of identical underwear. I did wonder if they were his lucky pants till I saw a pile of them, all clean and ready to go.

Helenahandkart · 28/08/2023 14:58

I used to do this. Had a work ‘uniform’ of black pinafore dress with coloured t-shirt underneath. I hated my job and didn’t feel it was worth making any effort for. There was no one there to impress. It made my day slightly easier.

It worked for Angela Merkel. I think I read she had the same (or virtually the same) suit made in about 100 different colours.

I bought same dress in different coloyrs when I found THE perfect fit.
I do the same with shoes too🙈
So I get her

Cherrysoup · 28/08/2023 15:22

At work, I wear a variation of trousers and jacket, notably 2 jackets. I’m very overweight and it’s comfortable, but I’m dropping weight rapidly so I need to buy some essentials. When I’m on holiday, I stay in yoga style trousers and a polo. I’d quite like to be cool and trendy, maybe I’ll get there when I can buy clothes in any shop.

CoreopsisEverywhere · 28/08/2023 15:24

I have a work uniform, different according to the season. I buy the same thing in two or three colours and rotate. I can’t be bothered to think about what to wear every morning, and wouldn’t wear smart work clothes outside of work.

Catusrusty · 28/08/2023 15:45

I used to wear a black suit and black shirt every single day in my last career.

I was once berated by a family member for not wearing make up to work, and also by the female head of HR no less for looking just like the men apparently. Surprised the long hair and double FF boobs weren't more of a giveaway.

So there is pressure to present in a specific way.

My overriding reaction at the time was WTF do you expect Deborah, I spend half of my time on building sites, would you prefer a mini dress and stilettos? Men can wear a single style of work outfit so why not women?

Ponoka7 · 28/08/2023 15:53

I used to wear plain black work pants and had around ten tops/shirts in deep purple/greens/pink etc. I used to love Dorothy Perkins for cheap workwear. It made life so much easier.

I do too! I wear different 'personal' clothes, but for work I have half a dozen identical cheap black jersey dresses from the same shop (there are slight differences but only because some are from older batches), and I wear them all the time.

I bought the first one and it was so perfect for purpose that I went back and got another two, then when they started looking a little tired I ordered three more a year or so later. I'm sure people think I only have one dress - I did look at the other colours but black was easiest 😀

ShadyCat · 28/08/2023 16:06

Sort of
I have (all the same style I bought in different colours)
Skirt in black, blue and grey pattern
Blouse in maroon, grey and green
Blazer in black and navy
Trousers in black
Shoes (heel t bar) black and nude
Boots (ankle) in black
Nude and black tights

Then I added
A navy short cardigan
A black long cardigan
Couple of dresses, some plain and some patterned in matching colours

So I can grab a skirt, blouse and blazer and know it all goes together or a dress and cardigan

Well, of course YANBU if it suits you, but I can't imagine wearing the same clothes every day as where I live (UK) the temperature is very different some days from others. I'd feel hot if I put jeans and socks and trainers and t-shirt and hoodie on on a hot day, but would be cold if I put shorts and a sleeveless top and sandals on another day.
Then I do different things on different days, and wear different clothes if I am attending a wedding or a party or a funeral or if I am dog walking or decorating or presenting training or giving a keynote speech or cooking or gardening etc etc.

So, as I say YANBU if it works for you, but I can't see how it would work for most of us.

Fisk with her brown suit

Yes 😂

SmudgeButt · 28/08/2023 16:24

I have worn black trousers to work for 20+ years. Often with a plain T and a very colourful scarf.

A few years back I found some nice colourful trousers and got 3 pairs - 1 pair lavender, 1 pale green and 1 florescent orange. Shocked people at work no end.

suckrifice · 28/08/2023 16:30

@Cherrysoup what jackets are they?

dudsville · 28/08/2023 16:38

I used to do this! I used to have to be dressed and leaving the house by 6.20 am, and i would be gone for 11 hours so i had to be comfortable. I had a narrow template made up of a top, cords, a jumper and either loafers or brogues. The top, cords and jumpers were all in colours that go together. I could be dressed in a few min.

Cherrysoup · 28/08/2023 16:38

suckrifice · 28/08/2023 16:30

@Cherrysoup what jackets are they?

Odd question! They were velvet, 4 different colours. I just sold them on ebay, bidding went a bit mad, people were paying over £30 for secondhand jackets, although they were all in excellent condition. I've gone from a 26 on top to an 18 so they were obviously too big.

Scaredycatttt · 28/08/2023 17:16

I don't wear the same thing every day but 90% of my clothes are black, so everything goes with everything and it doesn't take much thought. It also makes laundry much easier.

LadyWhistledownsPen · 28/08/2023 17:32

Oh I'm the other way. I love clothes and deciding what to wear everyday. I love midi dresses in different patterns and colours (think boho style) with knee boots in winter and I like smart black trousers with funky patterned shirts or cosy jumpers, jumper dresses, tunics and jumpsuits. I so have a slight shopping addiction but in my defence it's mostly all from Vinted.

Passthesickbagmabel · 28/08/2023 17:59

Best dressed woman I ever met had very few clothes. Dark jeans or ,navy trousers , striped or plain tee shirts ,cream aran knit hoodie or navy jumper. She had very shiny black bobbed hair and was always immaculate. She was doing a college course and was determined to go to uni as a mature student . She told me she was working as a barmaid and money was tight. I did notice she had a couple of pieces of nice jewellery ,a few scarves and a very nice ,simple leather bag. She always looked effortlessly elegant .

andrainwillmaketheflowersgrow · 28/08/2023 18:06

I kind of do this.

It's not the same outfit everyday, but I rotate between several t-shirts, several jumpers and several pairs of jeans/leggings and just mix and match depending on the weather and what my plans are.

I have a couple of dresses for really warm days and extra layers for winter but otherwise that's it. It makes things much easier!

CommonVetch · 28/08/2023 18:16

Give0fecks · 28/08/2023 13:07

@CommonVetch i would absolutely love to achieve this but I am just paralysed by indecision and lack of imagination to creating a capsule wardrobe. I have looked online but haven’t found ideas that suit my (lack of) style - I change outfits a million times in the morning if something doesn’t “feel right” eg too hot, too cold, too tight.

I had this issue. I really had a think about what I liked, what fit right and why, and how I felt wearing the clothes that fit me best. Then I bought only cuts/styles/colours like the best of the lot. I realised that I would buy something on a whim, or in an emergency, or from a charity shop, or in a sale, and feel obligated to wear it because it was there. But now I have everything I need and I don't have to think about matching anything. Navy or white. I have 1 red jumper and 1 purple jumper, but I'll probably get rid this winter and replace with 2 navy jumpers. I prefer to keep my wardrobe decisions as simple as possible.

SpringIntoChaos · 28/08/2023 18:20

I don't do this, but a woman I used to work with wore the same navy blue trousers and white, flowery shirt EVERY SINGLE DAY that I worked there. And I worked there for three years. She was the same age as me (early 50s at the time) so not really old, but she was a single woman and never married, with no children, so maybe just a bit 'set' in her ways? In winter she added a navy cardigan and in summer she unbuttoned the top button and removed the cardigan, but other than that, it was literally the same outfit. She may have had multiple copies of them, but they were the exact same.

Never saw her outside work so I don't know if she owned 'other' sorts of clothes...I'm rather hoping she had a 'best' blouse that was a jazzier variation of the white with blue flowers...maybe with pink flowers instead? 🥰

magicalkitty · 28/08/2023 18:24

I worked with a woman who literally wore the same outfit every day. It wasn't every day colours either. It wasn't a particularly fashion forward workplace, but she was seen as a bit militant and odd (not just the clothes but that added to it). We all wondered if it was literally the same garments or if she has a wardrobe full of the exact same clothes.

I think it's ok to do if you change the colours even if it's the same top/blouse, but the exact same is weird imo.
