I saw this movie when I was 18 and did not get it. I am now a 35 year old mother and this movie is really speaking to me. Is this a sign I am now very very old in spirit?

It's a great film whenever you watch it.

Thedogscollar · 27/08/2023 21:16

I'm 60 and I watched it again today. It makes you sit up and look at your life that's for sure.
It's a great film and Pauline Collins is absolutely superb as Shirley.

wildthingsinthenight · 27/08/2023 21:17

I love it!

mnahmnah · 27/08/2023 21:27

Well it shouldn’t be any indication of being really really old - she was only meant to be 42!

ssd · 27/08/2023 21:31

I taped it

Showing my age thereSmile

HRTQueen · 27/08/2023 21:38

I think many of us can relate to losing part of ourselves once we have a family and that time just seems to fly by so quickly

Its a brilliant film Pauline Collins is fantastic

LadyWhineglass · 27/08/2023 21:45

Bstard bloody Brexit means we can do a Shirley now if we wanted to.

LindorDoubleChoc · 27/08/2023 21:45

What is the AIBU here?

It's a film I would watch again. Full of cliches but also some lovely scenery!

LadyWhineglass · 27/08/2023 21:46

Can’t, I mean.

deClutterBugz · 27/08/2023 21:46

I’ve loved it since I first saw it at 18, I think I was born middle-aged.

You mean can't, rather than can, surely?

BIossomtoes · 27/08/2023 21:50

It’s a fabulous film, whatever your age.

senua · 27/08/2023 21:52

I'm never been overly keen on Shirley Valentine, which was written by Willy Russell.
It always felt like mansplaining.

Chowtime · 27/08/2023 21:53

Joanna Lumley plays her part great too (as always).

Chowtime · 27/08/2023 21:54

Where can I watch this for free? No netflix or amazon prime.

I’m on Amazon Prime.

Loving it very much! I might head off to Greece for two weeks and leave my family to deal with it.

Me too. I think I was first called middle aged at 19.

kitchendhshshdhd · 27/08/2023 22:00

DrFoxtrot · 27/08/2023 22:06

DrManhattan · 27/08/2023 22:08

Its a great story

Zanatdy · 27/08/2023 22:08

Always loved it but yeah you do get it when you’re older. Great film

Goingtobee · 27/08/2023 22:10

Missing point of thread but every time I watch it I remember how nice the sauce was that lives on the kitchen table - HP all sauce, it was lush! But yes, the film definitely resonates more the older you get.

pepino · 27/08/2023 22:22

Shirley valentine and educating Rita are two of my favourite films.
