I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Adults exclaiming yummy when a plate of food is put in front of them. OH said it the other day. I nearly resorted to physical violence.
Kids. My friend talks about her kid daughter. She's 50!.

"Caress" and "fondle". My XH used to like to use these words when pawing at me against my wishes. I still shudder. "Ravish" is beyond the pale.

"Nutty" used to describe the flavour of any food that is not an actual nut.

Fondle 🤢

TheNameItIsAChangin · 27/08/2023 22:17

I see your fondle and raise it to heavy petting! 🤢

Also, agree with a PP that calling a burger a patty is an abomination.

bongopow · 27/08/2023 22:21

Agree with belly and picky bits.

Also:

Snog

What about a combination?

Heavy pattying to describe the way people wrestle a large burger into their mouth, with ketchup and toppings oozing and bursting out of the confines of the bun?

😂 🍔 Those over-stacked burgers cry out for the use of a knife and fork, for dignity’s sake if nothing else!

Nodeepdiving · 27/08/2023 22:28

YY to this! I have a colleague who is forever off to the shops to "pick up some bits", can't stand it! You're off to the supermarket to get some shopping, no need to be so fucking twee about it!

Pottering, eurgh! Again, why the need to be all cutesy and twee about just being at home?

DH used to say "a thing of" to describe the container food/ drink is sold in, so "a thing of milk", "a thing of pasta". Really irritated me and it must've been clear as I haven't noticed him doing it for ages😅

Tinks15 · 27/08/2023 22:28

‘Babe/s’
‘hun’
’moist’
’banz’
‘hubby’
’wifey’

All of them 🤮

KnobbingtonKnobberson · 27/08/2023 22:28

I love the word moist.

I hate this new thing where people refer to themselves as a 'boy mom' or a 'girl dad'. Please desist, it makes my bottom crinkle in embarrassment for you.

Nodeepdiving · 27/08/2023 22:29

Ooh, and smashed or crushed for foods that have just been mashed or ground. I mean, wtf are you doing with that poor avocado, flinging it at a wall???

Needcoffeeimmediatley · 27/08/2023 22:30

Moist (obviously)
Runny, as in describing something as being runny in consistency Envy
Menstruation - horrible horrible horrible

Moist

It's so weird how I know a good few people who hate this word

Violinist64 · 27/08/2023 22:34

I don’t like the amount of swearing but other words/phrases I cannot bear are the ick, it gives me the rage, meh and my bad. I’m afraid l also get irritated every time I see would of/could of/should of. It is also amazing how many people do not know the difference between lose and loose too.

michalwave · 27/08/2023 22:35

Have we had nom yet? Double points for nom nom.

michalwave · 27/08/2023 22:36

Sorry, there were no noms on first few pages but see loads now 🤣

TheNameItIsAChangin · 27/08/2023 22:36

Pottering - ugh! But I do think in the discomfort stakes it is ‘trumped’ (another word I hate) by its close relation, pootling.

I’m going to have a pootle to the shops. Just no!

natura · 27/08/2023 22:37

Another one who hates 'poorly'. Grow up.

See also: 'selfish' and 'greedy'.

Childish words for childish concepts.

If you live in a Roald Dahl novel you can get away with it – if not...
