I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Also hate supper. Detest the word moniker as well, ugly and horrible journalist-speak.

Oh yes, there are quite a few journo ones now I think of it : uptick, revellers, blaze, scorcher....

Armpit, or just the word 'pit' when being using in reference to armpit 🤦🏻‍♀️

FoxtrotOscarFoxtrotOscar · 27/08/2023 18:58

Sucks, as in "that sucks". I think it's an abomination. Just horrible.

Get in my belly. Referring to eating food
Moist

Sweltering. DH is overweight and describes every day in the summer as "sweltering" and it drives me mad because 1( it's not, he's just chubby 2) he insists on putting fans and air con on even if I'm freezing because its "sweltering" and 2)he doesn't seem to know any other words

@TestingTestingWonTooFree me too! I hate ‘poorly’. Makes me think “just get over it, you’re not ill.”

I also hate ‘goofy’. Especially when people say it in reference to themselves. “I’m so goofy!” Shoot. Me. Now.

Armpit, or just the word 'pit' when being using in reference to armpit 🤦🏻‍♀️

In dressmaking it’s referred to as the armscye which I dislike intensely.

I also hate ‘oxter’ which means the same.
Funny because I have nothing against armpits themselves.

Comfy is worst of all.

Hate the sound but not necessarily meaning.

AmazingSnakeHead · 27/08/2023 19:12

Bliss. I hate it, with a passion, it actually sends shivers down my spine and makes me feel ill. I'm not sure why, I think it's the hissssss sound and that it sounds like "blister", contrasted with the meaning that is completely opposite.

I also really hate the word "pokey" as in "a small pokey room" no idea why, I just hate the sound and the look of it.

Incidentally, I used to think that the people who claimed to hate the word "moist" were just copying Lily How I Met Your Mother but now I realise that actually, the show got this from reality. It's so weird how that word it so universally hated, to me it conjures nice competing wet earth imaginary.

AmazingSnakeHead · 27/08/2023 19:14

Also "cosy", especially when it's metaphorical, e.g. a cosy book, a cosy film, a cosy chat. I can just about tolerate cosy nook or cosy armchair.

I hate the word slum as it conjures horrible images of poor people in times gone by who lived in awful conditions . Even worse the word is making a comeback to describe some of todays housing and some LL .

guzzleandstuff · 27/08/2023 19:15

Meal, filling, picky, poorly (just say ill or sick or unwell - especially for adults!), "passed" for died, teeth, - and lots more! (It must be me..😁)

I'll add oxter to that list. It makes me shudder.
