I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

How can CAVEAT not be mentioned?

IfICantHaveYou · 27/08/2023 19:56

Also, the word FART!

alongtimeagoandfaraway · 27/08/2023 19:57

I dislike the word ‘posh’. It seems to me to be the vocabulary of envy. Things can be expensive, or tasteful, or traditional etc but ‘posh’ is very othering and I perceive it as saying more about the world view of the person using the word than whatever they are talking about.

Shadowchaser · 27/08/2023 19:57

Meal 🤮

bananaboats · 27/08/2023 19:59

Glad to see a few mentions of poorly already! Not sure why it just gives me the rage!

Poorly pronounced Pauly is tolerable, but some people I know pronounce it poo-er-ly and that makes me think of diarrhoea etc 🤢

CaptainJackSparrow85 · 27/08/2023 20:02

I clicked on the thread intending to say ‘meal’ and ‘supper’ thinking I was really original. I see I’m not.

Sittingonthefence83 · 27/08/2023 20:02

NotMadeOfStone · 27/08/2023 20:05

When people add 'ass' to words, like 'grown-ass adult'.

WTF?!

Pottedpalm · 27/08/2023 20:07

So many of us hate ‘meal’
A lot of these words are to do with food/eating.

'bloods' as a plural.

It is blood.

'Youse' as a plural. It is You (although I understand many European languages have a plural version of You which makes Youse in English less nonsensical'

'Et' as a past tense of ate.

That is the full extent of my irritation. Anything else i dion't care about.

Pamper (horrible sticky-sounding word, used by grown women who are undergoing cosmetic treatments and feel the need to justify it)
Poorly (I want to scream when I hear this word. Just so embarrassingly wimpy, whiny and babyish. It’s like seeing an adult coughing like a toddler with their tongue sticking out to try and get sympathy)

LyricalGangsta · 27/08/2023 20:32

Bunch when used to describe a lot of items
"I did a bunch of jobs"

LyricalGangsta · 27/08/2023 20:33

" I have a bunch of stools you can borrow"

Mumma.

Makes me think of mediaeval minstrel shows.

God yes and this. My mother called her mother 'Mumma'. It annoyed me hugely because her mother was violent and alcoholic and got her children taken off her regularly fir beating them and on more than one occasion strapping them to the radiator while she went out to drink.

My mother calling her 'Mumma' used to make me feel nauseous. She was no mother and she deserved no cutesy nickname.
