I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Tasty. Loathe it.

Me too. I especially hate it when used to describe something sweet.

Yes, if it's sandwiches and cake. Not for a main hot meal!

Have to disagree on all those, unless you are addressing a toddler.

When people say they are 'cross' about something.

Can't really explain it. It just feels like it barely qualifies as an emotion to me.

Harrysarseinthedogbowl · 31/08/2023 21:41

'Bits and bobs' (I heard someone the other day saying 'bibs and bobs' which is even more irritating).

Super as an adverb - super anxious, super upset etc

Drained, when referring to drinks, as in "she drained her coffee cup". Bleurgh.

CruCru · 02/09/2023 16:02

I hate “refresh”. Mainly because I used to go out with someone who would ask me to “please refresh my water”.

I also hate “pop”. I think it’s because it’s used when someone wants you to do something that is inconvenient but doesn’t want to acknowledge that it is. “Why don’t you pop over here?” / “Can you just pop round with your ladder?”

Re kids - I see what you mean about goats but it isn’t euphemistic or offensive. John Lewis has a kids’ section on their website. I once overheard a woman telling her child (in a rather look-at-me way) that it was “children, not kids!” after someone else had said “Kids! Go and sit down”.

CruCru · 02/09/2023 16:06

Smiled - “What would you like?” smiled Katy. Ugh, horrid.

Mooed - there’s a Times columnist who, when she doesn’t like someone, describes them saying things as “mooing” them. It’s a shame because I might like her stuff but this is quite irritating. It’s the first thing I look for when she has a column.

Ooh I was reading a very low brow "chick-lit" book where everyone grinned .

"D'you fancy a drink" I grinned at Matthew
"Oh yes" he grinned

Not asked /replied/queried . Grinned ..

Surreptitiously ... a housemate at uni who had delusions of grandeur would try and shoehorn it into random sentences all the time, still irritates me 🤷🏼‍♀️

Holibobs

Grope

Cheeky (when in the context of pizza hut or nandos or a glass of prosecco)._I hate all this apologetic, self justifying language about food "oh, I really shouldn't ." Eat it. Don't eat it. But stop with the cringey " naughty me, I'm eating a treat" kind of language.

Boak! Yes I have also found it in those short story magazines like Take a Break Fiction, Women's Weekly etc. It's so cringey. I know I'm not a expecting Doestoevsky or Proust when I'm reading one of those but even so...

Grown women using baby words. Eg, “yummy”, “hubby”, “swimming cossie”, “choccy biccy” 🤮🤮🤮

I see your fondle and raise it to heavy petting! 🤢

Also, agree with a PP that calling a burger a patty is an abomination.

A man once said to me that he'd like 'to explore my body'.

🤢🤢🤢

Explore is now verboten.

'Agency'

Yes, I tend to read it as meaning wanking, which often confuses me.
