I hate the word 'stink'. What words do you hate for no real reason?

I dunno if it's just because I dislike it so much, but 'stink' or 'stinky' or 'stinking' seems to be written regularly on different posts. I hate it and no idea why really it's just a word Grin

It's not even like it evokes an unpleasant memory, like of an awful odour or something. I have no logical reason for my not liking the word. Maybe just the way the k looks kind of sharp at the end, and abruptly finishes the word? And of course it does mean and unpleasant thing, whereas the word 'slink' does not necessarily...See, I told you it made no sense.

Also, belly. Again I can't really say why I don't like this word. I don't have such a violent dislike as in I don't mind other people using it, but would never use it myself.

What words do you hate for totally illogical reasons?

Veggie as in "are you a veggie"

How hard is it to say vegetarian?

Vegetarian has far too many syllables. Veggie is fine.

I don't really understand this thread. People must be in a constant state of irritation.

Chums
Bubbles when referring to champagne.
The phrase "on the regular". Just saw it on another thread and was immediately biased against their AIBU.

Oh god, “poppy,” I forgot that once. Such a bloody stupid sounding word. Can’t believe there are people who use it as a name!

A grown adult describing something as stinky makes me feel sick.

@Dinnerlady12

Yes, especially if they say it about blue cheese! It actually affects my enjoyment of the cheese if somebody says that!

Like yeah the cheese might be pungent but please don't say that s word in relation to the beautiful cheese, it's not fair Grin

Theres a cheese called Stinking Bishop

I also don’t like the term staycation when referring to holidays taken in this country. It is still a holiday if you go away and stay somewhere. In any case, relatively few people went abroad for their holidays when l was a child. If we went away at all, most of us had a holiday in this country.

I think many of the phrases to which we object are originally American in origin and have crept over here, gotten being the worst offender. Passed is another as is the childish train station. What is wrong with the correct term of railway station?I However, there are plenty of bad examples from this side of the Atlantic too. Hubby and belly have been mentioned a lot. I don’t like the word poo, either, as it sounds childish.

Offer - as in everything you give to a baby / young toddler is offered. Offer the breast. Offer the nipple. Offer some water.
Small. EVERYTHING on MN is small. A small treat, a small glass of wine, a small portion (boak) a small amount of alcohol. A small gift. A small gathering. A small about it ice cream. Unclench and indulge ffs!

I need time to prepare / process.
Yawwwwn.

GrandHighPoohbah · 28/08/2023 11:34

Percolate. Especially when used for ideas, as in "Let that percolate for a moment". So pompous.

AffIt · 28/08/2023 11:35

I cannot abide the word 'tasty': it literally makes my hackles rise and I have absolutely no idea why.

DemelzaandRoss · 28/08/2023 11:38

Turd.
