Don't want to go to my local village pub anymore

David87 · 26/08/2023 11:39

Told mate if he wants to meet for a drink I'd rather head into our nearest biggest town.

I'm sick of visiting my local village pubs..

Sausage fests.

They're all the same.. same middle aged blokes with beer guts, leathery skin from decades of smoking and alcohol abuse.

They all sit around the bar spouting the same ol cringe banter and low brow humour.

Crap innuendos and sinpery to the bar staff women who probably hate their jobs and the customers

I was sat in there the other day and I just wanted to leave. £5 a pint to be surrounded by simpleton pleb blokes who are in there everyday.

I'm a 37 yo guy I might be turning into a grumpy old git.

But @David87 if you’re 37 then you were born in 86 or 85…

Ah come on let's not be cunts.

I get it, there's a few pubs near me that I would walk past to get to the decent one ( and I'm in zone 3!)
Last time I went to one of the more 'lively' pubs round my way they were running a raffle for someone's (used, '80s) microwave. Strip lighting and sticky floors and people all too ready for a fight. I had enough of that in the Medway in the 90s to last me a lifetime.

Equally where my parents live there's one pub that has a nice garden so is great for the summer. But in the winter when you're all forced inside you realise just how gammon-y the regulars are. It's a bit depressing.

You don't need to be on the pull to want a bit of variety with your pint.

Mysterian · 26/08/2023 12:30

The OP never said anything about pulling.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 26/08/2023 12:35

I wouldn't be seen dead in any of my local pubs for the same reason......it's an hours train ride for me to find anywhere decent that I'm happy to spend my time and.money in 😬

WildCherryBlossom · 26/08/2023 12:36

You're lucky to have a village pub. Ours shut down. I miss it and the old geezers in it too.

PutinSmellsPassItOn · 26/08/2023 12:37

And I think some posters are a bit confused.....sausagefest AKA sausage festival. Everything seems to be a.festival these days 🙄

BitOutOfPractice · 26/08/2023 12:45

God I love my local. But then I live in a small city with 20+ bars within a 10 minute walk. I am indeed blessed.

BitOutOfPractice · 26/08/2023 12:45

Pubs not bars. There’s many many more bars.

Either German (Oktoberfest) theme, with large steins of lager and sausages. Or a venue that is mostly men. Let's face it most pubs and clubs fall into the latter

wizzywig · 26/08/2023 12:49

@David87 @LadyOfTheCanyon god I understand you both so well

countdowntonap · 26/08/2023 13:57

@David87 *In actually love my local wetherspoons.

More 'cosmopolitan' crowd, loads of tourists and visitors go for food and drinks and I can get a pint for £2.*

Actually agree with this. I live near a tourist town and our Wetherspoons has a great mix of people in it. Our local village pub…not so much.

CruCru · 26/08/2023 14:02

Actual I sort of know what you mean. I also suspect that men may often be on the receiving end of “banter” more than women. That sort of thing gets old pretty fast.

BrioNotBiro · 26/08/2023 14:06

Jeez, they're all village gastropubs round my way and charge £30 for a main course . I'd love one with leathery old geezers.

Richmondgal · 26/08/2023 14:11

David87 · 26/08/2023 12:14

That's why I posted here.. I thought women would relate more to it than me.

I love my local with loads of non pc banter and piss taking where people are not pretending to be offended by everything
if you don’t like it go to bar where kid’s drink
no one makes you go there

neonjumper · 26/08/2023 14:12

There are 5 local pubs within a half a mile walk to me ... and they are pretty much as you describe . The one that isn't is more a gastropub and charges £9 for a small wine .

Funnily enough OH and I were talking about a local that is rebranding itself ... it looks great but it's the same old clients ... just as you describe ... and that's not for me .

People might scoff at Wetherspoons ( a bit like they used at-a Greggs) but I'd rather go there ... the younger folk round here have started to go there since the lockdown ended .

Decent drink at a decent price and good food !

DyslexicPoster · 26/08/2023 14:19

Do you have to interact with everyone at the bar? I rarely go to the local pub, but if I bump into the pervy rector or one of the PTA leaders it's a quick smile, hello, how are you? Walk off with my drink. I feel no urge to let the perv pinch my arse or talk about the school fair.

Just either avoid the pub or don't engage. Is there just one table? Or village is tiny but we don't all know everyone enought to sit and chat all night

Itick8outof10boxes · 26/08/2023 14:30

One thing you soon learn about MN David, on aibu it's a race to the bottom for bitchiness and bat shittery, although most posters are okay.

dottiedodah · 26/08/2023 14:38

I hear you David! In our local (small town) there is a definite whiff of the Regulars ,people like you describe. With the distinct feeling of unfriendliness towards those who arent.I think thats why places like Spoons ,and the Lounge chain are so popular, a good mix of people ,a nice atmosphere and cheap drinks!

Spambod · 26/08/2023 14:52

You are obviously far too young and cool for the village pub. Best get your parents to drop you off in town with mate in tow

I think you’re having a laugh.

Devonshirelass · 26/08/2023 14:59

I can’t believe you are getting such a hard time! Your post made me laugh and laugh!

TerrorOwls · 26/08/2023 15:08

Broaden your horizons David. Unfurl those wings and fly.

MissingMoominMamma · 26/08/2023 15:13

I getcha- it’s like that here too.

Luckily the buses are £2 for any journey here, so we nip into either one of the local cities.

PragmaticWench · 26/08/2023 15:14

David is so much nicer than Dave.

Do you have to interact with the leathery old locals? In ours they tend to congregate near the bar but the tables further away are safe.
