To move from Cornwall to Manchester?

I live in Cornwall and always have. I'm 26 and have a shared ownership 2 bedroom flat. I feel that I don't want to stay down here forever and I quite like the idea of moving to a big city (I'm a teacher so I can work anywhere) and starting a fresh, especially after an abusive relationship.

I've never been to Manchester, but I've been in a relationship with a Mancunian and love the accent, how welcoming they are etc. also you can get SO much more house for your money! I could trade my shared ownership flat for a 3 bed semi-detached!

Pros? Cons? Anyone who lives in Manchester who can recommend any specific areas to consider and what might make it a good move for a 26yo female.

Thanks!

Personally, I think you'd be foolish to move to somewhere you've never visited. Surely you'd want to spend time there to see what areas you like? You might hate it.

Areas depend very much on your budget. South Manchester is expensive, so it would probably be out of your budget. Prestwich is reasonably priced and has a good community.

Go for it. But I would sell up and rent fkr a shirt while until you work out where you may want to live. Manchester is a great place for young people.

CurlyTop1980 · 26/08/2023 11:36

How about somewhere a bit more "local" like Nottingham or Birmingham which is closer. I love Birmingham

CurlyTop1980 · 26/08/2023 11:37

Although I also love Manchester. Its great! Go for it!

Alargeoneplease89 · 26/08/2023 11:38

Cons: weather!

Pros: friendly, affordable, diverse, everywhere seems close (Liverpool, Chester, York, Sheffield)

I moved from Suffolk to outside of Manchester and love it.

Traffic....different sort of beauty, you might miss the sea?

IndiganDop · 26/08/2023 11:41

Where are you looking in Manchester that you can buy a 3 bed semi? Can you give examples of areas? There are some areas I would I would not recommend to an "incomer"!

totaketheplunge · 26/08/2023 11:56

Thanks guys. Yes, I'm planning to go up for 3 days in October!

Here is the link to one I love: www.rightmove.co.uk/properties/135573242

Not sure on the area? A house like that in Cornwall would be over 400k...

YANBU to move and work somewhere different, but wouldn’t leap into property purchase!

Restlessinthenorth · 26/08/2023 11:59

I was in Manchester last night. It's bloody great. If I was younger without commitments I'd move there in a flash. Go for it!

totaketheplunge · 26/08/2023 11:59

The thing is because I have shared ownership I can't rent mine out so I have no choice but to sell and buy elsewhere

Do it!! Cornwall isn't the place to settle anymore. Its going down the shitter and has very few opportunities.

We're hoping to move away ASAP too. And so are most of my colleagues! 😁 most are looking at the SE and Newcastle.

Good luck!!

We had a shared ownership near Truro once and a whole queue of people wanting to buy it. Was bloody brilliant. You'll sell it in no time.

Take an umbrella

YukoandHiro · 26/08/2023 12:02

I lived in Manchester for 5 years. I loved it. Incredibly welcoming. Didn't want to leave but had to for work.

Cornishmary · 26/08/2023 12:03

OP you got me looking at Manchester now 😂

YukoandHiro · 26/08/2023 12:03

But you need to do some research on areas... Gorton isn't the best!

CommonVetch · 26/08/2023 12:06

Sell up, rent for a year, really get to know the area. You'll still be in a strong position to buy.

IndiganDop · 26/08/2023 12:14

Yes, that area is not the best...
If you are looking at around 300k you'd be better off looking at Burnage, Reddish, Heaton Chapel, maybe Urmston or Flixton or Timperley. Levenshulme if you like vibrant but a bit grubby.

Generally avoid East and North Mcr if you aren't a local born and bred.

IndiganDop · 26/08/2023 12:15

Sorry just saw 200k was your price. You won't get a 3 bed semi in a decent area for that. You could try Eccles or Monton maybe?

Bichonmum · 26/08/2023 12:17

Agree, a lot of nice places can have parts that aren't very nice.

You might be best renting for a bit until you get a feel for the area you want to live.

cryinglaughing · 26/08/2023 12:22

I moved alone when I was 29 to a place I visited for a day....and that was only to find a rental to move to.
Turned out great and 25+ years later, I am still in the general area, not far from Manchester.
Love it, love the people, absolutely no regrets.

Go for it!!

CountTo10 · 26/08/2023 12:24

Love love Manchester and have lived here for 30 years plus. I would advise looking for somewhere with good Metro link. Bury, Didsbury, Charlton, Altrincham. All good places to live.

SlipperyLizard · 26/08/2023 12:28

I think Cornwall to Gorton would be a bit of a culture shock! My DH moved from the Lancashire countryside to Hulme (next door to Moss Side) and it really depressed him.

I’d choose a smaller property in a nicer area than a bigger place somewhere you might not enjoy living.

dunroamingfornow · 26/08/2023 12:28

Manchester's fab but you'll probably need closer to £300k for a 3 bed semi in a decent area. Have you considered what school you might work at? Commuting can be hellish, depending on what time you need to travel and where from with lots of traffic and trains often cancelled. It's a great place to live though.
