To move from Cornwall to Manchester?

I live in Cornwall and always have. I'm 26 and have a shared ownership 2 bedroom flat. I feel that I don't want to stay down here forever and I quite like the idea of moving to a big city (I'm a teacher so I can work anywhere) and starting a fresh, especially after an abusive relationship.

I've never been to Manchester, but I've been in a relationship with a Mancunian and love the accent, how welcoming they are etc. also you can get SO much more house for your money! I could trade my shared ownership flat for a 3 bed semi-detached!

Pros? Cons? Anyone who lives in Manchester who can recommend any specific areas to consider and what might make it a good move for a 26yo female.

Thanks!

Op you need to follow lifeinmanchester on tik tok, it's such a fun account! There's also a women's running group in Manchester that anyone can join, if it's your sort of thing can be a great way to get to know new people in an area. I can't remember the name off the top of my head but will find it!

I'm slightly further south but know a couple of people from Cornwall who have made the move and don't regret it.

South Manchester Is cosmopolitan and has a massive student population ,popular and safer but expensive,Didsbury Chorlton Withington Fallowfield , look to the suburbs especially Stockport, Edgley Hazel Grove heaton moor u will get a 2/3 bed here fr 200k easily also pretty vibrant and safe areas with little poverty and within 10 mins to Didsbury Chorlton and a 20 min drive to the countryside (Peak district) the opposite way 20 mins to city centre .Gorton is pretty rough would avoid / good luck u will soon pick up the lingo ya know what a mean are kid😊

OP look at Stockport, SK postcodes - I’d say you’d still want £250-300k to find something but it’s wonderful here. Born and raised, feel free to DM me for any questions.

Cons: the weather.
No sea.

Pros: house prices
diversity

Noopnoop · 29/09/2023 21:27

I'd steer away from Gorton and the M18/M13 postcode. Also, houses are going for way over asking. I know someone that just sold their house for 40k above asking. Renting might also be an issue in South Manchester. In my area, there are only 8 places available for rent.

Hi all,

Please can I have some advice? If you were a solo, 26yo old woman wanting to move to Manchester. Where would you look at moving to? Some things to consider:

  • I'm a teacher so needs to be decent schools around
  • I don't necessarily need to be in the middle of Manchester
  • I like somewhere with plenty going on but also not keen on mega busy roads with loads of traffic
  • somewhere I will feel safe

Thanks so much!

Would you need a teaching job first? Also do you drive? You don’t want to confine yourself to one area by getting a house first.

I did my teacher training in Manchester and I didn’t have a car and it used to take me hours to get across the city to the different placements. I lived in Levenshulme at the time and it was easy to get to Stockport but difficult to get to Middleton for example. I won’t recommend anywhere as it was a long time ago and I’m sure some places have changed a lot.

Chorlton/Didsbury possibly Withington or Levenshulme - but the first two are expensive if you’re not renting with someone

Fionafaorta · 30/12/2023 20:36

I live in Chorlton, want to swap? 😂😂

Was this before the trams? Very accessible now.

I think that’s pretty much impossible in Manchester!
