It’s from 765 votes, where 17% say the advert should be allowed and is a useful data point.

So you're taking the 17% of people who think the misogynistic advert (it's not about racism)
should be allowed as support, even though you think that's misappropriation of the term?

Ok..................

That's not funny, really. Hmm

I don’t agree the advert is misusing the term Karen. As I posted earlier, being an Australian advert, by an Australian company, they are likely using the Australian definition which is in line with the original and intended use of Karen which is to call out entitled behaviour with racist overtones. It’s other posters that are convinced that an Australian adverts published by an Australian company must be using Karen as it is “commonly used” just by their anecdotal experience of living 5,000 miles away in the U.K.

I have yet to see a post from DeeCee that suggests any white women today are responsible for the atrocities described in the links. What I am reading is a lot of posts from women who seem seem furious that anyone dares to cite past examples of the complicity of white women in visiting terror on Black people.

It’s ironic really. The sardonic ‘oh yes, we white women are responsible for all bad things” posts on here remind me of sarcastic comments from men who sneer ‘yeah all men are rapists’ because they hate it when women point out don’t men commit sexual assaults.

MorrisZapp · 27/08/2023 12:44

Did you see my link which was an exhaustive news piece about Australian women being called Karens for 'call the manager' behaviour?

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 12:47

I'm just struggling to understand the relevance of the links to the subject of the post, in which case. Or why the need to spam the thread repeatedly with huge amounts of copypasta.

What I am reading is a lot of posts from women who seem seem furious that anyone dares to cite past examples of the complicity of white women in visiting terror on Black people.

It's not that people are denying it, they are denying that these events somehow negate women's rights in 2023 to object to being called a Karen as a way to shut them down.

I did. But that is not proof that Karen is always misused in Australia….
No word has a 100% misuse rate.

NotTerfNorCis · 27/08/2023 12:51

I just find it incredible that people think 'Karen' always means racist. Sometimes it does. But mostly it doesn't. A black woman can be a 'Karen'.

A woman can be called a Karen because a man disagrees with her about anything. During the pandemic, 'Karens' supposedly supported masks - and also refused to wear them. It all depended on who was doing the name calling.

pompomdaisy · 27/08/2023 12:54

Another way to try to make middle aged women invisible, apart from ignoring them of course. Shame on that company 😡

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 12:54

That's such a good point about the pandemic. We literally had Schrödinger's Karen, who both berated people for not wearing masks and refused to mask up.

BillaBongGirl · 27/08/2023 12:54

Karen is supposed to mean racist entitled white woman.
Thats it’s origin and intended usage.

It’s really not the problem of Black women that y’all have changed it and are misusing it.

SomeCatFromJapan · 27/08/2023 12:56

It’s really not the problem of Black women that y’all have changed it and are misusing it.

And it's really not the fault of the middle-aged women it is directed against, either. Again, take it up with those who misuse it. In the meantime, those who have it used against them in an ageist and sexist context will continue to object.

HRTQueen · 27/08/2023 12:59

AlisonDonut · 27/08/2023 12:34

Are these self proclaimed nazis [and quiet nazis] made up of middle aged women who are trying to book a doctors appointment for their kid's earache?

There are certainly some women involved two very prominent women in European politics that hold openly very right wing racist views. One is a PM. We have had our share here

but racism isn’t just about dealing with outwardly aggressive attitudes is it. If it was it would be easier to deal with easier to call out but underhand racism can be just as damaging I think is more damaging in our society and the lack of awareness people have of their own unconscious bias

have I made assumptions on people because of their ethnic background, religion, their assumed class, their education of course I have. Just thinking I treat everyone equally doesn’t mean I always have and to look at this is uncomfortable

Ereshkigalangcleg · 27/08/2023 13:00

No it isn't its origin, as multiple people have pointed out.

Was going to make this very point!

Confused Who is 'y'all'? The women on this thread? Because they're clearly not the ones misusing the word, seeing as they've spent the last 29 pages objecting to it's misuse.

ChardonnaysBeastlyCat · 27/08/2023 13:03

This is getting silly. It’s all exactly the same as yesterday.

I’m off to bake a cake or colonise a continent or two, depending on which one takes my fancy.

NotTerfNorCis · 27/08/2023 13:05

I have sympathy with people who want to use Karen to mean a racist white woman. The problem is that it just isn't used like that now. It'd be fine if that was the only thing it was used for.

As it is, I'm seeing it all over the place. Men use it for all women, young women use it for older women. There was an example on my local Facebook group yesterday. Can't remember the subject, but it was something like this:

'We need more local buses. There aren't enough for pensioners.'

'That's a you problem, Karen.'

That poster has been corrected multiple times, they are knowingly spreading false information. They know very well it was first and foremost, and remains, a white man's term.

Yip. Nobody cares what point Karen is making, they just care that she's making it.

Tessisme · 27/08/2023 13:23

You might as well try to herd cats as stop language from evolving. You can point out the 'original' meaning all you want, but words will be co-opted elsewhere, gain popularity and eventually, in years to come, nobody will remember or care about the origins. It's still relatively early days with this one, so the attempt at herding cats will continue, but ultimately will be doomed to failure. And there will still be racism. With or without ownership of the Karen word.

The two Australian men who set up the “Karen’s Diner” franchise, seem to have been unaware of the intended use of the term too.

Interestingly, the company has gone into liquidation, after reports that staff experienced sexual and physical harassment. They were also forced to sign an employee handbook, which included a waiver asking them to forgo injury pursuit.

Three workers who claim that the diners were unsafe workplaces are pursuing action against the company, but the company appears to be avoiding accountability. One ex employee, Kali Arumugam said ”Every interaction we've had with them post-employment has been met with dismissal or hostility”.

It’s hard to see how any of this could have happened in a country so clued up on the "original and intended" use of the term “Karen”.

That Karen's Diner fiasco was a multiple legal dispute waiting to happen. Two Aussie blokes huh, who knew.

RobinStrike · 27/08/2023 13:44

The term Karen is used flippantly and frequently online. On local fb pages I've seen people who complain about noise or parking instantly receive a reply "Karen" with no other epithet required. It's an instant derogatory exclamation. No one is aware of the age, race or any other profile of the person making the complaint other than they are female. People using the word as an insult are unfortunately also frequently female.
The use in the advert is insulting, disrespectful and misogynistic. If I knew who issued it I'd definitely complain to ASA.

CecilyP · 27/08/2023 13:46

Is anyone furious? More like irritated! These historic examples of racism might be relevant to another topic but they aren’t really relevant to the use of the name Karen as in insult to middle aged women, or especially in its use in an advertisement.

Agree, I live in a sleepy rural village, it used on our village FBpage frequently, always by men to shut down a woman.
