To switch off subtitles

Sloelydoesit · 26/08/2023 00:31

Watching a movie with my son. English language. We are native English speakers.
He had switched the subtitles on and claimed he couldn't watch it without them. Apparently this is 'a thing' and he thinks that everyone mumbles.
I have switched them off.
Anyone else here who has children in the same situation who watches TV with subtitles on?

I watch with subtitles as does o e of my children.

I guess it's a processing thing- the odd programme without them I find really hard to follow.

Yabu. What harm is it to you to he'll him hear?

Shinyandnew1 · 26/08/2023 00:33

We watch with subtitles even when the children aren’t in the room!

HerAvatar · 26/08/2023 00:34

Not kids, me! Your son is correct, everyone does mumble and 'background' music is always far too loud compared to the volume of the dialogue. It drives me mad and I need the subtitles to follow anything, I miss loads otherwise.

RicherThanYews · 26/08/2023 00:35

It's a thing, nobody can enunciate clearly. I can't watch anything without subs, it's like watching TV through a wall.

supadupapupascupa · 26/08/2023 00:36

My kids learnt to read due to subtitles. Don't underestimate them! I need them due to deafness so they are always on.

CuteSnowpeoples · 26/08/2023 00:37

I always have subtitles on as I find things hard to follow without as I have inattentive ADHD.

HirplesWithHaggis · 26/08/2023 00:38

My husband does. Partly because people do mumble a lot on modern films, (and so many are literally dark so you can't even lipread) partly because we can't have the telly up loud enough for our elderly hearing because it would disturb our ds sleeping upstairs. I am personally in two minds, I get distracted reading the subtitles and miss the nuances of facial expressions but do appreciate actually knowing what is being said.

BoohooWoohoo · 26/08/2023 00:38

Does he have TikTok by any chance ? Lots of videos are subtitled in there.

I watch with subtitles because I think that people mumble too and rewinding to re listen to things would be annoying for me- especially as I'm one of those people who would rewind too far then skip too much to get to the right place.

Totallyterrific · 26/08/2023 00:40

We always have the subtitles on if they are available. Various reasons. YADBU to turn them off just because you dont like them.

KingOfThieves · 26/08/2023 00:42

I am an adult and always use subtitles. I started when DC2 was a baby as during the night the tv would be at a low volume and baby wimpering/gurgling/winding would drown out the tv. I am not sure how I watched without them now 😂 from talking to work friends I am not abnormal

smooththecat · 26/08/2023 00:46

It’s the way they do the sound mixing now, and also because fewer than 0.01% of home systems would have the studio quality sound, dynamic range etc. that they have in the edit.

HarridanHarvestingHeldaBeans · 26/08/2023 01:06

I can't remember exactly where, but I remember reading that subtitles are really good for children's literacy . I used them for myself because I sleep very little and don't want to wake the rest of my family, but after reading about the benefits for kids, I started having them on for everything.

WeetabixTowels · 26/08/2023 01:09

I’m an adult and have spent my whole adult life watching programmes with subtitles on. Your son is right, the mumbling is a strange epidemic and I can’t watch anything without subtitles now

WanderingWitches · 26/08/2023 01:10

If he feels like he needs them on, why would you switch them off?

BellaTheDarkOverlord · 26/08/2023 01:11

We discovered the subtitles a few years ago and it’s a game changer for us. I can’t understand anything being said at all unless I use subtitles for help. I can finally watch something and know what’s going on. It’s definitely processing of some sort. I struggle irl to understanding people unless I can see their mouths to try lip read. Everything just seems like one sound to me.

FussyPud · 26/08/2023 01:11

I often grouse that I wish cinemas would have subtitles, and if I’m watching dramatic or energetic tv programming I’ll have subtitles on too - the boon it gives to my processing is massive.

unvillage · 26/08/2023 01:12

I always watch with subs, makes things a lot easier.

Gliomes · 26/08/2023 01:15

Children, no. I positively choose them but my husband can't stand them. Harsh from PP to say YADBU. They can cause difficulties for some people.

I think it's a sensory processing thing for him - he can't process that they don't line up perfectly with the spoken words.

I have them on when watching something he's not following, but we switch them off when we've chosen the programme together. When it's my stuff, the subtitles mean I can have the volume lower so it's less disturbing for him too.

PeopleAreWeird · 26/08/2023 01:21

How odd !

Why would you switch them off??

I would also book him a hearing test

merrymelodies · 26/08/2023 01:24

We also have ADHD (me and DC) and subtitles help.

Shady23 · 26/08/2023 01:28

I watch everything with subtitles, it doesn't feel right without them! My parents did so I guess it's what I grew up with?

Sometimes I've said to people "oh sorry I'll turn them off" and new friends have said "no keep them on, I watch with them as well"

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 26/08/2023 01:30

I like subtitles my dh can’t stand them. I like them due to being a little deaf. He won’t watch with them, most stuff I can follow but some I have no idea what is going on.

newnameforthisthread01 · 26/08/2023 01:31

Eurgh, subtitles are bloody annoying so I'm not surprised you turned them off

sashh · 26/08/2023 01:37

Your son is right, but I suggest a hearing test just to check.
