To switch off subtitles

Sloelydoesit · 26/08/2023 00:31

Watching a movie with my son. English language. We are native English speakers.
He had switched the subtitles on and claimed he couldn't watch it without them. Apparently this is 'a thing' and he thinks that everyone mumbles.
I have switched them off.
Anyone else here who has children in the same situation who watches TV with subtitles on?

I Hope you switched them back on for him. Seems… odd to switch them off because you think you know him better than he does?!

JenniferBarkley · 26/08/2023 07:03

I love subtitles, no hearing issues but I've used them since the ceefax/Teletext days.

I turn them off for comedy as they can run the punchline of jokes but always use them for drama so I don't miss anything.

I also find it helps with learning the names of characters in a new show.

YouAreBeingUnbearable · 26/08/2023 07:05

You sound like my Mum. Anything she didn’t understand? Rubbish. You’re making it up. It’s not important. She needed to be in control at all times, even when it was something that didn’t affect her.

I’m in my 40s now and we have almost no relationship. Also, I still watch everything with subtitles as I miss loads without them. Some people just process written word more quickly/easily than spoken word.

Elfandwellbeing · 26/08/2023 07:14

Subtitles are great. I use them a lot.
My teens use them to watch tv late at night thinking I do not know they are up :-)
YABU … just enjoy a film together, times are changing and there will be plenty of new stuff that you have never used of seen that you consider as pointless, but then what ?? You alienate your child because you think things they value are pointless??

GreenMarigold · 26/08/2023 07:18

I’ve in my 40s and have used subtitles since I was a child. I can listen to the radio perfectly fine but I just can’t follow dialogue on tv without the help of subtitles.

Redbrickrebel · 26/08/2023 07:20

I disengaged from far too many films and TV dramas due to not being able to 'pick' the words out of the dialogue. It was never a volume thing, simply a range or processing issue.

Subtitles mean I can now enjoy most TV , and it's a relief to know I'm not the only one who needs them to actually appreciate what is happening.

The brain does a funny thing with them anyway, once you have watched with subs for a even a short amount of time, you feel you aren't and are just hearing what is spoken, if that makes any sense.

UntidyFairy · 26/08/2023 07:27

I always have subtitles on, I'm glad to hear so many people agree that sound clarity is so bad nowadays. My adult dd used to say having the subtitles was annoying, but since she's had her own house she agrees that without them you miss too much of the conversation.

Why have scenes of intense, whispered conversation, and then put soaring music on top of it? And it's often in dimmed light so you can't see their lips move.
Listening to plays or anything else on the radio is absolutely fine and I have no difficulty hearing. So it's not my ears. And YABU.

Yes this.

Just leave the subtitles on for him. You sound controlling and closed minded.

I started using subtitles a few years ago- I went to have my hearing checked and it was fine. Audiologist asked me if I had recently moved into a more open plan home - I had - right around the time I started having trouble hearing the TV. Mystery solved - apparently he sees it all the time.

mymeatballsmymeatballs · 26/08/2023 07:44

I'm 36 and I've had the subtitles on for as long as I can remember. My mum does it too so I guess I've just copied her since childhood. My DH isn't bothered but has got used to them now. I refuse to watch something without them tbh, it's just so hard to follow without having the volume blasting.

Paradise90 · 26/08/2023 07:55

My mum didn't let me have subtitles as a child, always turned them off. I could never follow anything and didn't enjoy watching programmes or films. As an adult I've been diagnosed with severe bilateral hearing loss. I did need them, I really couldn't hear well enough to understand the TV. Maybe it would br a good idea for him to have a hearing test?

OldTinHat · 26/08/2023 07:57

When my DS was still at home, he always had to watch TV with the subtitles on. I didn't get it at first but now I can't watch anything or make sense of it without them.

Timetogonocontact · 26/08/2023 08:02

Does it work really impact you having them on? Surely if he is saying he needs them to help hear you can cope with this.

gabsdot45 · 26/08/2023 08:03

I like to have subtitles on. My hearing is ok but I struggle with mumbling too.
Dh hates them so if they're off he has to put up with me asking "what did they say" constantly

towriteyoumustlive · 26/08/2023 08:04

I love subtitles.

My hearing picks up everything so I find it hard to focus on one voice if there is background noise. They DO sound like they mumble and I'm glad it's not me.

If they're facing the screen I lip-read but the subtitles mean I don't miss anything.

DH hates them and refuses to watch it with subtitles so they have to stay off.

It's been shown to be beneficial to kids to have subtitles on and read them.

GuinnessBird · 26/08/2023 08:06

My husband is deaf so we always have subtitles on, even if I'm watching something that he's not.

I don't understand why you turned them off, do you always think that your opinion is the most important?

Merrow · 26/08/2023 08:08

I grew up with subtitles as my mum had hearing problems, had a brief break from them, then ended up with a DP with hearing problems. I think I'd struggle without them now! And they're supposed to be helpful for children learning to read so I don't turn them off for DS1.

They're occasionally annoying in their placement, and if it's live TV we turn them off because they can't keep up and DP finds it less frustrating just to miss some things.

SprinkleOfSunak · 26/08/2023 08:09

When I lived with my parents we used to always have the television turned up loudly, and the only time we used subtitles would be if I was watching a foreign language film.

My Husband couldn’t believe how loudly I used to turn the tv up when we first started dating, and would always turn it down and say how it drives him mad. He used to always watch with subtitles, and sometimes not even have the sound on at all! It took me some getting used to, and I always insist the sound is still on, but now I cannot stand the tv being turned up loudly, it feels like an assault on my ears, and I feel overwhelmed and get a headache (like when I’m at my parents’ house).

My parents are not deaf, but cannot follow a programme, and don’t even try (I’ve seen them) unless it’s at high volume. They say everything is boring at lower volumes and there’s no point watching, and they detest substitutes - say they get in the way. They really panic if they’ve accidentally switched them on!

I can’t enjoy anything without subtitles. I feel like I miss so much without them. I didn’t realise how much I relied on them until one day I was watching a programme that didn’t have them. I turned it up and could hear all the words, but just couldn’t enjoy it.

steff13 · 26/08/2023 06:55

If someone says they need them, it's a bit of a dick move to turn them off.

I agree

KingOfThieves · 26/08/2023 00:42

I am an adult and always use subtitles. I started when DC2 was a baby as during the night the tv would be at a low volume and baby wimpering/gurgling/winding would drown out the tv. I am not sure how I watched without them now 😂 from talking to work friends I am not abnormal

Me too... for the same reasons!

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/08/2023 08:12

I use subtitles. I'm semi deaf

People do mumble and background noise /music is so loud. No need for that

Dh gets annoyed sometimes

I think as my dad is deaf I grew up with subtitles so o can listen and read at same time if need be

I do struggle with some programmes as mumble and miss the plot

WeWereInParis · 26/08/2023 08:14

I agree with him about the mumbling. We often turn off programmes because of it - DH has extremely poor eyesight even with glasses (he's not allowed to drive), and he just can't read the subtitles without sitting on the floor. It's annoying because there are quite a few programmes where we can't hear the talking properly.

FreshStart12345 · 26/08/2023 08:15

YABVVU

I started using subtitles when dd was a toddler as she would always pick the noisest toys to play with whilst I was watching hollyoakes. That was around 17/18years ago now and I can't watch tv without the subtitles.
It's great that when someone interrupts you still know what's going on.

Blondeshavemorefun · 26/08/2023 08:15

I do find sunny sometimes how they get words wrong and think they didn't say that

Wonder who writes the subtitles

Do they not get them from the script

My 6yr also likes them and will read them

Or when singing songs on you tube /films

Can be educational and help with kids reading

Takoneko · 26/08/2023 08:17

I don’t always have them on for watching tv to but often put them on for watching a movie. I would not dream of switching them off if another person said they needed them though.

It is also a thing now, not just with kids. Dialogue in movies is becoming harder to hear clearly.

Actor Pete Davidson saying something, while the on-screen caption reads as a line of question marks.

Why we all need subtitles now

It’s not you — TV dialogue has gotten harder to hear.

Spectre8 · 26/08/2023 08:17

To be a le to hear what is being said, means the volume on my TV would be so high if would piss of my neighbours (terraced house) so i use subtitles for this reason. Perhaps id they also didn't mumble or muffle their lines it would be easier to hear.

Only place I cant watch something and hear whats being said is the cinema
