How big a salary jump would you need to move?

I’m on just under £52k. Been with the company for nearly six years. I’m bored with, but also comfortable in, my job. I have a great relationship with my boss and I know she, and the company, need me.

I’m in process for a new job. I wouldn’t have applied for anything, but I got headhunted and have been offered a big pay rise.

Moving means giving up a good relationship with my boss, the goodwill I’ve built up in the company and super-flexible working arrangements (I only do a day a week in the office). How much would you want the pay rise to be to take the new job?

Anything over 10k

roses2 · 25/08/2023 20:37

What are the extra costs you'll incur due to more commuting, wrap around childcare etc?

If you're happy but bored I'd move for 10% increase on top of the additional extra costs.

Don't forget pension and bonus will also be higher due to the higher base pay.

Mum2jenny · 25/08/2023 20:39

68k but I don’t know why that’d be my choice

Curiosity101 · 25/08/2023 20:42

More than 10% - probably anywhere upwards from £60k

But it depends on lots of other factors. So long as you're happy with the overall package... £60k

Lasttimehonest · 25/08/2023 20:44

£15k for me

No children. At the moment, the new job would be fully remote, but that is likely to change, so it’s a factor.

If they have headhunted you, hope you have made your demands plain. Flexible working, one day in the office etc, otherwise you need to factor in a cost of the loss of these activities to make it worth your while

TravellingJack · 25/08/2023 20:53

I'm in this situation, almost exactly! How strange Confused

In my case it was an application though, not headhunted, so less leverage. The increase will be almost 35%, but I'll lose child benefit and have to be in the office more and it's further away... but even factoring all of that in, it's still worth it! It's a job I didn't expect to get as I didn't think I was good enough but thought 'well a man in my position would apply for it so fuck it why not' and here I am. It does mean more/harder work, but whilst I like my current job, I am bored and getting lazy, so a (big) change is probably a good thing...

BlackberryCrumbs · 25/08/2023 20:55

Anything over about £10k ish.

I have a similarly flexible, good job. I'd want a solid minimum £500 a month net increase before I'd move.

blueshoes · 25/08/2023 20:56

20-30% more

babbi · 25/08/2023 20:56

No less than £15 k ..

Pinkea · 25/08/2023 20:57

I’m on 37k, fully remote, fully flexible (I can do my own hours as long as I attend some mandatory meetings), 9 day fortnight, nice team, friendly boss. I reckon it would need to be at least 60k for me to consider it right now! I know others in my field on 50+

But I have got 3 young kids, so you can’t really buy this type of flexibility.

Butterflyfluff · 25/08/2023 21:01

As soon as you earn just over £50k you have to factor in you lose 42% in tax and NI on any additional income - that makes a massive difference to what’s ‘worth it’

Chatterbait · 25/08/2023 21:11

This is almost exactly my position!

20% or more I think.
Good luck with decision

anythingbutlillies · 25/08/2023 21:18

20% min but would also include the flexibility/ WFH / whatever as part of your negotiations.

Wakeywake · 25/08/2023 21:22

I aim for at least 15-20% increase on the overall package with each job move.

SystemSeven · 25/08/2023 21:26

Ask for 70K and see what happens.

Wallywobbles · 25/08/2023 21:41

25k

user1471434829 · 25/08/2023 21:44

Honestly I'd have to weigh up the new terms vs the flexibility I had. I could earn probably 10-15k, going for a big step up but I earn enough (62k for 33 hours a week) that it's completely not worth it! Life is for living not trying to earn loads and be miserable!

NineToFiveish · 25/08/2023 21:47

I am about to start a new role, fully remote, and it's allowing us to move house next summer. It is a 30% pay increase.

But this is a length of a piece of string question, isn't it?

Teateaandmoretea · 25/08/2023 21:48

At my age I’d be looking at the pension contributions 😂😂. My company double what I put in so in the future (not so far off) it will make a bigger difference than a few quid salary. I also am used to 30 days AL.

Pebblepaint · 25/08/2023 21:49

I've never taken the job just for the money. It's always predominantly something else, a move away from somewhere I was bored, and opportunity to do something that excited me or something that worked better for family life or my aspirational lifestyle.

This is really valuable advice 🙂 I don’t want to assume money is everything!

The goodwill you’ve built up doesn’t pay the bills. Factor in an extra holiday a year, how much more you’d want per month for the hassle of being the new kid and see what the numbers say. It’s cost us £8k for an extra holiday & I’d want £500 pm minimum to move, so it’d be £15k minimum for me.
i have recently moved though for £12k and I can feel the benefit (I immediately reduced hours)
