How big a salary jump would you need to move?

I’m on just under £52k. Been with the company for nearly six years. I’m bored with, but also comfortable in, my job. I have a great relationship with my boss and I know she, and the company, need me.

I’m in process for a new job. I wouldn’t have applied for anything, but I got headhunted and have been offered a big pay rise.

Moving means giving up a good relationship with my boss, the goodwill I’ve built up in the company and super-flexible working arrangements (I only do a day a week in the office). How much would you want the pay rise to be to take the new job?

I’ve just moved for 10% on my basic, 3 days more holiday, death in service which I don’t have and a far far better pension plus a much bigger organisation so a realistic prospect of significant promotions

Honestly I was on around the same as you in a job I really liked with a great team etc and got offered approximately 25K more to move. Been in the job a few months and although it’s no more hard work, the culture is horrendous and it’s really toxic so I’m looking to move on soon probably. I’m a bit worried about getting a salary match but to be honest I might well take a slight cut and even more stress / longer hours for a better environment!

It’s industry dependent etc but I’d shoot for about 35-40% increase

I don’t want to assume money is everything!

You don't always move for money but if you move, make sure the money is worth it.

Women should not be shy to shoot for more pay. My reasoning is that work takes me away from my family. So for every hour I am away from my family, I am going to squeeze every drop from my employer.

I work in the public sector, 30-40% just isn’t going to happen. You need to understand your sector. Realistically for a sideways move you’ll not get - massive payrise. For a big promotion yes, you may

Unless they were offering the same flexibility I currently get an awful lot. I gave a SEN child and probably only still have a job (part time) as my work are very flexible and understanding, for which I ignore that they pay me less than market rate.

PeloMom · 25/08/2023 22:21

@whathappenedtosummer23 that's what I mean it’s industry dependant. In my industry for a lateral move outside the company I can expect anything from 30-60% while internal promotion is only 10%. There’s no enough info to give an educated opinion.

At least 20% increase on base salary.

My current role is really quite comfortable, so anything new would have to be in "too good to turn down" category to make a move worthwhile for me.
