To wonder why people blame lockdown when talking about weight gain

Apple41 · 23/08/2023 22:20

Always been overweight however I lost weight during lockdown due to having time to excerise and cook well. I keep seeing people blame lockdown for their weight being higher and don't get it. Obviously gyms were closed but so were restuarants.

The circumstances allowing bit is the most important part of that post.

You're right that there were legally no time limits in England, but what the legislation said is only one part of the story. Some people were functionally prevented from getting out.

Some of the stories on here of Lockdown are horrendous and cant imagine the mental and physical toll that must have taken. I consider myself lucky we were keyworkers and led fairly normal lives, went to our jobs, kids could go to school a few days a week and Covid never worried us from day one.

I also haven’t disagreed that some people couldn’t get out due to their circumstances, but those sitting on the sofa thinking they were some kind of superhero, really weren’t.

PinkCherryBlossoms · 24/08/2023 13:02

Well obviously no, sitting on the sofa didn't make you a superhero, but that's a given. The point is though that actually, some people effectively were locked up. Even if the law didn't say they had to be.

Well lets hope the government is one day held accountable for the absolute scandal it was.

I have absolutely no confidence in that ever happening.

Me neither but one can hope!

WhalePolo · 24/08/2023 21:09

I was supporting someone during lockdown who was extremely vulnerable. Widowed, cancer diagnosis and otherwise alone. She found ways to cope and was an inspiration.

I think we were faced with an emergency situation. Many of us are used to over consumption and an individualistic lifestyle.

I remember thinking about Maslow’s hierarchy if needs early on in the pandemic and to strip back to the very, very basics in order to get by on a day to day basis.

I’m sorry, but if you compare - on a global scale - to what we were able to access - we were not comparatively worse off.

We are able to live a relatively normal life now - and I have a strong sense of hope now that are global scientific knowledge will combat whatever mutation comes next.

That people can’t have - at least a modicum of gratitude for that is quite baffling to me.

Tinybrother · 24/08/2023 21:48

Yes, I can see how you would find that baffling.

EsmeSusanOgg · 24/08/2023 21:54

Working from home and looking after a toddler. While only being allowed to leave the house once a day for exercise. Not tons.of weight gain, but enough. Couldn't really get in my steps (at pace) chasing after a 1 year old.

EsmeSusanOgg · 24/08/2023 21:57

In Wales - we had very strict rules on daily exercise. DH and I both key workers - but able to mostly work from home, which meant we couldn't access childcare. It was exhausting. Really busy work days, and looking after a toddler.

Runningshorts · 24/08/2023 22:20

I lost loads of weight in 2020 through having covid (the nasty version), but have since become overweight because it wasted my muscles and fucked my thyroid up Confused

There was no emergency situation.

Rebranded flu isn't an emergency.

There was no emergency until TPTB pretended there was one.

Honestly this is such nonsense. I never stayed at home. I was out and about all the time and I went to the supermarket every day.

NO-ONE GOT SICK.

None of the supermarket workers, none of my neighbours.

Where was this "pandemic" when there was no evidence of it?

Where was this "pandemic" when there was no evidence of it?

So because you didn't see anyone with the virus, including yourself, it doesn't exist?

What a weird post. I know plenty of people who got sick. I know people who died. I was sick for over a month with it. My friend who was a healthy 40 year old got it in 2020. It attacked her organs so severely that she's still in a wheelchair.

I didn't say the virus didn't exist.

Why would you deliberately misrepresent what I said?

The virus was spreading since autunm 2019, loads of people were really ill, especially over Christmas 2019.

It spread like wildfire and was OVER by the time we locked down in March 2020.

It was a flu-like respiratory virus, nothing special about it, just a normal flu season.

It was NOT a pandemic in any way, shape or form.

Yabu. Surely as an overweight person you understand that there are complexities around weight gain?

Love to hear your definition of a pandemic then

OCaptain · 26/08/2023 10:07

@EmilyBrontesGhost

NO-ONE GOT SICK.

I find this statement difficult to believe. It would have been much more credible to state that some of the people you know had inconsequential colds, tiny sniffles, the odd sneeze or two. Instead you say there was no sickness at all?

MrsDBaddiel · 26/08/2023 10:14

I didn’t know anyone who got it in the first wave but ds got it in summer 2021. He lost his sense of taste and smell completely for about 2 weeks. Food and drink are a big deal to him, the impact it had on his mental state was frightening and I was really scared it might not come back. Covid at that stage wasn’t “just a cold” it was a freaky unknown quantity that affected lots of people in lots of different ways. It’s easy to look back now and wonder why we didn’t question the ludicrous and confusing restrictions but we genuinely didn’t know what we were dealing with.

Some people don't live in reality.

You can't reason with those people.

ElTingo · 26/08/2023 15:07

I was working front line in the nhs (very active job) whilst home schooling kids when I got home. I put on about 2 Stone which I haven't lost unfortunately.

More sitting in the evening ( I would have gone swimming), less opportunity to go out at weekends - we would be out in the parks/ playgrounds. We have about a month solid we didn't go out for walks as at least one person in the house had covid.

I struggled with back pain from lack of exercise and tight muscles.

Lingfield01 · 26/08/2023 16:57

People were depressed, bored and losing hope. Your smugness probably didn’t help either.

Ambi · 02/09/2023 17:50

OP never came back then. Start a goady thread then piss off, nice.

Ambi · 02/09/2023 17:51

Obviously jogging around and sucking on a lettuce leaf rather than sat back with popcorn 🍿 😉
