Inspired by some chat in my office today.

Worked in one of those horrible, sickly, neon-lit dessert type places as a sixth former. Did one shift where I came straight from sixth form and was rota'd until 10pm, didn't end up getting out til about half midnight at which point I'd missed the last bus, I was covered in batter and chocolate, it was roasting, they had Capital on which just played the same three songs over and over again, and I ended up spending half the shift hidden in the fridge in the stock room. Ended up getting paid for a full week's work and blocked the recruiter's number and the manager's number in case they came asking for it.

Agreed to do some work recently for an old manager who now has his own trucking business. Had just left the company where he was my manager a year previous, the reason being that the end client kept sending me to work from a depot that was 2.5 hours round trip away.

They're supposed to let visiting drivers leave earlier than base drivers but due to the workload I was doing a 10-12 hour shift on top of the 2.5hr round trip. On a day rate it worked out crap.

My old boss said he could put me at a depot 10 mins from my house with same company. However, upon arrival they told me I'd be travelling up to the site which was 2.5 hours round trip away.

Did the shift and said wasn't coming back next day. Wasn't worried as already had 5-6 other contractors chasing me to work for them - mixer drivers with all the necessary construction certificates are like hens teeth atm.

Two days in a big DIY chain as a teenage. Nobody spoke to me (like they’d turn away and pretend they couldn’t hear me) other than one middle aged guy and that was only because he thought it was funny to send me to the warehouse to get the wrong item for a customer so he could scream in my face. I quit and got a job elsewhere.

BruinBear96 · 23/08/2023 20:19

@Thisisnotmyname2022 no idea, sorry, I can't remember. It was about 10 years ago.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 23/08/2023 20:20

Before I started. Had ticked the 'do not contact current employer for reference prior to interview' and they phoned him up. This was not well received - nor was the 'Oh, we never pay attention to that' when I called them sharpish to ask what the heck were they thinking of. They offered me the job anyway, as they already had references from the two others I'd requested them to approach before interview.

And then 48 hours before I started, they posted a letter saying I'd been moved from the single bus, 35 minute journey to work to a 3.25 hour, multiple bus, train into London and one out on a branch service, then another bus and a twenty minute walk through unlit woodland/common/industrial estate to a desolate portacabin where I'd be working alone for 5 hours every evening.

I didn't turn up. I'd got myself down an agency - as the original boss had fired me, which was exactly why I didn't want him contacted beforehand - on the day of the letter and started the following morning.

I'm wondering about my new job tbf.

Third week and pay is good. 45 hours minimum paid and I'm currently getting away 2-3pm some days. Get a monthly bonus and overtime is £20 an hour.

However, the boss is bipolar and supposed to be an absolute nightmare. Loses his rag and literally shouts st people. Have had three depot managers quit in the past year and last was apparently reduced to tears.

He got back from holiday today and was apparently being ok compared to his usual self, which just means he was snotty and sarcastic as opposed to shouty. However, he walked straight past me and didn't even acknowledge me or introduce himself.

Everyone else is lovely and job is great if you can just ignore his occasional rant apparently. But I'm honestly not sure if I'll be able to keep my cool if he starts bellowing at me. I get on with most anybody but I have a low tolerance of arseholes tbh after dealing with a fair few in my time, and I could leave and walk into another equally paid job within two days, but not 10 mins from my house and not with such short days.

In the construction sector you expect to deal with some gruffer individuals but this guy is the fucking devil it seems.

elm26 · 23/08/2023 20:55

I had an evening job cleaning a dentist to get some extra money in, on day 5 I snapped and asked the dentist (owner) to please put his dirty tissues in the bin instead of chucking them next to it. He said "my wife would do it, in my country, women wouldn't be saying what you're saying right now" and walked off out to his car to leave.

I put the cleaning stuff away and locked up, got in my car and never went back. I had 3 missed calls and a flurry of panicked text messages the next morning when his wife (also dentist) turned up to see a dirty clinic waiting for patients. I text her back "ask your husband how he spoke to me regarding his snotty tissues" and never heard from them again.

2 weeks, luckily on a reduced notice period so had a new job within 3weeks.

SgtPercyTwentyman · 23/08/2023 21:09

Not me but DW once started a job at 9am. She was employed, she thought, as a cook. Discovered when she got there that they expected her to plan menus, order food and be responsible for budget as well. Not just for her location but for two others some miles away.
None of this had been mentioned previously.
She walked out at 9.25am.

FettleOfKish · 23/08/2023 21:14

I did just short of 6 weeks in the events team in a fancy hotel and then sent a 9am Monday morning emailing detailing why I wouldn't be going back (bullying, management incompetence, unavoidable damage to my good reputation in the very small local area/industry)

DH once lasted 2/3 of a night porter shift. Same hotel as it happens, before we knew each other Grin

Mine wasn't on the job, but in the middle of the interview process. Applied for a job when I was 18, way more money than what I was on and it said flexible hours but you could work up to 40+, I didn't even really understand what the job was actually about, as they used quite a bit of jargon and it said no experience necessary, training on the job, so I thought f*k it, I'll apply and learn on the job (if i get it). Got an email to say could I come for the interview!!!!!!! Brilliant!!! That's the first step......this was during the Winter, must add this. I turned up into the city centre, dressed as smart as I could, standard white top, black trousers, and some black comfy ballet like shoes (no grip) no socks. Waited around with another group of people then we all got called into a room. They asked us all to join into groups of four with another member of staff......they were going to 'take us out onto the field to give us first hand experience of the job' drove us to a village on the outskirts of the city and it was f**ing door to door 'would you like to switch your broadband' people. I was fuming, absolutely freezing as this village was covered in snow and I'd got these stupid non grip ballet pumps on, after about 2 houses, they asked us if we were still interested in the job, ibtold them flatly NO, I need to get back to the city so I can get back home, they told me they were actually out on a job and I'd have to get the bus, I asked them where the bus stop was and they said they hadn't got a clue. I eventually found it after asking random people walking round where I could get one into the city. I had just about enough money to get me there too, as I only had a return ticket. WORST INTERVIEW EVER!!!!!!

I had a similar experience... Went for an "interview" and then we all went on a train paired up with a "long timer"... It was door knocking getting people to switch gas and electric. I was absolutely astounded when the person I was with stuck their foot in the door of an elderly vulnerable man trying to force him to switch. After a couple of hours we were to head back to the office to finalise the "interview"... Thankfully they had paid for a return train ticket to the area we had been, I hopped on the train a d just headed straight back home.

ValentinaTheVampire · 23/08/2023 21:20

The quickest I ever did that was when temping. I was meant to do a week but said goodbye at the end of the day (I think they knew as they started really trying to be nice to me), told them exactly where I was with the work they'd given me, walked to the temp agency and told them I wasn't going back. It was awful.

The quickest I said it in a permanent job was three days in. I told them immediately and worked a couple more weeks and then left. Longest three weeks of my life and a huge mistake going there in the first place. Couldn't go back to my old job and ended up unemployed for a couple of months. Luckily landed on my feet and got a pretty good job later and I'm still there

Well, I've not even spoken to the guy yet but I'm on a three month probation so I imagine it won't work out well if I have a barney with him. Apparently he doesn't hold grudges and the guys who've been there a while can give it back to him, but no two ways about it he's a horrid individual.

However, he's usually at the office rather than the plant where I work so most days I won't see him. I'm also out at customer sites for most of my day. But 100% he will find some petty reason to moan at some point is what I've been told.

It's a tough one. I always like to make my own judgement on people but literally every single person has told me he's a nightmare to deal with. The job is perfect for me but it's pretty much against my principles to let anybody speak to me like I know this guy will at some point.

For example, the plant manager is a young guy in his 20s who is really good and doing a job most people don't get until their late 30s at least, probs their 40s in most cases. He's on about £50k and works like an absolute trojan but apparently the boss had a meltdown the other week and told him in a meeting in front of everyone that he wasn't worth £20k! I'm just not sure I can deal with that type of individual tbh.

apric0t · 23/08/2023 22:19

Worked in a call Centre selling double glazing, on day two I opened my front door to leave home to go to work and it was raining, so I phoned and quit the job, it just wasn't worth it 😂

MountMumanddad · 23/08/2023 22:23

I worked for Wilko’s straight out of Uni because I needed the money - it was in their call centre, primarily taking orders over the phone. Completely awful. Management were absolutely shit, people were abusive over the phone, all the staff there were just miserable. It was genuinely the most depressing environment I’ve ever stepped foot in. By the end I was arguing back with rude customers, and / or hanging up. Not the job for me! I stuck it out for a month and they seemed baffled when I handed in my notice.

Hibernatalie · 23/08/2023 22:39

3 hours in a call centre. Didn't even stay until the end of the shift to get paid.

shibhon · 23/08/2023 22:39

About 5 days. Working as a temp for an oil company. It was a long term contract and they'd had so many problems finding the right person. I got the job. It was many years ago and crap pay btw (probably £7.50 per hour)
I was told that there was a meeting in one of their other offices about 250 miles away the next week and I would be attending.
I was expected to sit in a car with a man driving his car down there.
I asked about the payment for being away overnight (for two nights) and was told I would be staying in a hotel. They considered that the payment.

I ended up being taken infront of HR and being asked if the job was for me. She explained that engineers (probably on £400 a day at that time) didn't get paid for being away from home.
She couldn't see why I should.
I remember the agency I worked through had NO IDEA what was going on and were furious with the very well known company.
Oh yes, Marathon Oil. I remember you well.

When I left school at 16,I got a job in a nursery-39 hours a week for £30.90 a week mid nineties

I've never,in my life since worked in such a bitchy, nasty, snotty, smug environment

They had their favourite kids and the rest just got ignored-I don't mean looked over, they where ignored all day

They'd stand and bitch about anyone-the parents,kids,staff-even if the other person was in earshot-everyone was fair game

You could have cut that atmosphere with a blunt knife

I was going home in tears every night-it was that bad

I'd been there about 3 weeks,when I was left with 20+ 2/3 year old kids-all by myself

The manager walked in and started screaming at me because I was on my own-the other 2 women that where meant to be in the room with me had nipped out for a fag qnd where stood watching and smirking at me through the window

This was my fault I was on my own apparently and she finished off her rant with 'and you need to brush your fucking hair-your a fucking state!'

I walked past her,got my coat and bag and walked out with her chasing me down the road, still screaming at me

I lost her 5/6 streets away-god knows who was looking after the kids in that room

My mother tried to make me go back to say sorry for leaving them in the shit but I refused and got another nanny job within 3 days

I heard many years later, the owner ended up bankrupt about a year after I left

Mylovelygreendress · 23/08/2023 22:46

In the 1970s on holiday from Uni I was offered a job with a night club. First shift, arrived and manager took me to collect my uniform. Not quite a Bunny Girl but similar idea . He stood as I went to try it on . I said I was feeling awkward but he stood so I handed back the uniform and left .
Including “ interview” ( ie looking me up and down) approx 1 hour.
My mother thought I over reacted!!

ThreeLittleDots · 23/08/2023 22:46

About an hour or two in Millets. Was like that scene in friends with all the coat hangers mangled up together in a cupboard and I had to sort them out. Made up an emergency and left.

Sickofchangingmyfuckingusername · 23/08/2023 22:50

Back, back in the day. Off from uni for summer holidays and got a temporary job in a casino as a cleaner 5am-7am. It all sounded fine, posh city address and allowed me to waitress later in the day. There for 10 mins- never been in a casino, but they look grotty in the dawn light.

First job was clean the big ashtrays, hoover carpet and them do the toilets. Go to first ashtray to discover cigar butts and phlegm gobs. That, and the thoughts of what I might find in the loos was enough to send me out of the door. ‘I knew you wouldn’t last long’ said the manager. Too right mate. Back in bed 20 mins later!

SweetLorele · 23/08/2023 22:54

An Oxfam Originals shop when I was a teenager. I loved vintage clothes and thought it would be a cool place to volunteer. On my first shift I was told how to spot shoplifters, and then how to sort the clothes. In a bag of clothes was a beautiful, designer cashmere coat in camel. Even at age 18 I knew that was a classic piece. I was told no one would buy such a thing and to put it in the bag that went "for rags." I couldn't believe a charity could be so wasteful so off I went.

thinkkook · 23/08/2023 22:59

Homeless drop-in place. They made me cook bacon and I'm vegan.

Staff were stood around slagging off the service users then being all pally to their faces.

Walked out at lunch time and never went back.

I could see EXACTLY where this was going as I was reading it. Same thing happened to me, only I was wearing heels and they brought me to a hilly town in winter. I was supposed to be shadowing an account manager at a marketing firm for the day.

Many years ago, summer holiday job in a pie factory. One day was enough.
