Inspired by some chat in my office today.

Worked in one of those horrible, sickly, neon-lit dessert type places as a sixth former. Did one shift where I came straight from sixth form and was rota'd until 10pm, didn't end up getting out til about half midnight at which point I'd missed the last bus, I was covered in batter and chocolate, it was roasting, they had Capital on which just played the same three songs over and over again, and I ended up spending half the shift hidden in the fridge in the stock room. Ended up getting paid for a full week's work and blocked the recruiter's number and the manager's number in case they came asking for it.

Babysitting, The dad was an arrogant twunt of a RAF Officer. He stood there barking orders at me ( i was a mum of 3 in my late 20s) told him to do one and walked out the door, had been there less than 5 minutes.

SauronsArsehole · 23/08/2023 18:47

2.5ht shift as a cleaner. The temp in the building was 29c by the time I left but was hotter prior and the store cupboard had 35c temp recorded.

I was sweating so much it took two days and rehydration solution to stop the all over muscle aches and no they weren’t the kind from hard work. I was aching and sore joints all over. Fuck that.

Paulisexcluded · 23/08/2023 18:56

Vacuuming marks and Spencer at 6am when I was a student. Lasted 1 day. So ashamed of this now.

I got a job as an accounts assistant in a hotel. I was working alongside the finance manager in what was a tiny store room with no windows and we had to keep the door locked. I lasted 4 hours.

Oh my goodness 😩I wouldn't have coped either....

Eachpeachpears · 23/08/2023 19:00

Lasted a week and a half as a career. I may have stuck it out a bit if my daughter hadn't got sick but I witnessed all sorts there, care plans stating a 2 to one ratio but doing toilet runs alone etc. Just not ok. Then my daughter got sick with pneumonia which turned to sepsis and they told me while I was in hospital with her that I needed to be there for training. One very strongly worded email sent from the critical care department waiting area and I was out of there. (Dd was ok thank God)

Wotrewelookinat · 23/08/2023 19:00

Not me but DD. Got a job with Card Factory…communication, hours and pay were crap. Didn’t even make it to the first shift as she got a job in Tesco instead who were paying more than the minimum wage for a 17yr old and a much better job all round.

I worked as a nanny for 2 days. The first day she gave me cash and I thought fine maybe she hasn't set up the PAYE yet. Second day she promised to be back in time for me to pick my DS up from preschool. She wasn't but fortunately there was other adults in the house I could leave him with. She tried to set up a third day and I said it wasn't working. I felt bad because I'm a people pleaser but I couldn't hack it. The house was filthy and they had no respect for me or my time

Thisisnotmyname2022 · 23/08/2023 19:06

Sounds familiar! Shop didn’t begin with M by any chance?

HennyPenny1234 · 23/08/2023 19:09

Less than ten minutes, literally walked straight out without telling anybody

SpeedbirdSquawker · 23/08/2023 19:14

When I was in my early 20s I had been doing temp admin for an agency. They sent me to an insolvency company to work the reception. The woman who greeted me didn't smile. She was so unfriendly, as was the majority of the office. No sooner as I took my coat off had I put it back on again and was out of there. I can't cope with unfriendly people.

fyn · 23/08/2023 19:16

One day in a customer support type role temping between jobs as I had a three month gap between leaving one and starting another.

I was put with a bank of six people all about my age, early 20s. Nobody would show me what to do, they spent 90% of time talking about what drugs they’d been doing and then sent me to the canteen on my own for lunch while they all ate at my desk. The whole thing was bizarre and I can’t think how I’d offended them, not my sort of people at all so did not return.

MrsDBaddiel · 23/08/2023 19:18

45 minutes in a high end independent furniture store. The guy who was supposed to be “training” me (to be obsequious to snobby customers) was a racist, anti semitic cunt. I lost count of the times he said “p**i” in less than an hour. I said I was going to the toilet but walked straight out and never returned.

I worked for 1 day in a school uniform shop during the summer holidays when I was 16 or 17. One of the other people who worked there - she was a bit older than me, I think she'd worked there the summer before too - was awful. She was rude, condescending and confrontational about everything. I'd started work the same day as one of my friends, who put something on the wrong hanger and this girl lost the plot over it. She shouted at my friend, humiliated her in front of the shop, went on and on and on about such a silly, simple mistake made on day 1 that my friend cried. So I never went back as I never wanted to see the nasty cow again.

Sorry thought I quoted.. did this shop begin with an M?

NotMadeOfStone · 23/08/2023 19:22

Worked at an insurance place for one day.

Nobody spoke a single word the entire 9 hours I was there. Utter silence for 9 hours, I thought I had gone deaf!

spuddel · 23/08/2023 19:30

Oh too many! Worst was working for a photographer, my long term relationship had just ended and I was really upset but carried on. Owner kept banging on about doing a photo shoot as I was 'very photogenic'. He tried to ply me with wine and then lunged at me. Married with young kids. I left there and then after reading him the riot act and getting what I was owed.

Favouritefruits · 23/08/2023 19:31

Three days in a curiosity shop aged 17, honestly the staff where just as curious as the products they sold it was so creepy, I for £3 an hour I’m surprised I lasted three days!

ElFupacabra · 23/08/2023 19:40

A few hours. I was 18 maybe. It was a company providing something for elderly people (I can’t quite remember it was like assisted living so electricity or some sort of service). There was a lot of data gaps so they wanted me to call them up and get the missing info, expect 99% of it was just their sexuality. I asked why they needed that information and was just barked at about diversity monitoring or some such bullshit. I phoned about 5 people, most of them could barely understand me they were so deaf or confused. The rest of the time I fake called my own mobile for the rest of the time and pretended to talk / leave messages or had fake conversations with myself 😂. Left at lunch time and didn’t go back it was horrendous.

Oh god I’ve had this too, soul destroying. I was in an office with 3 people like this, if they wanted me to do something (I was admin) they would email me, but not even raise their head over their desk to say a word about it or anything. I lasted a few weeks as it was only temp but christ it was horrendous.

WonderingWanda · 23/08/2023 19:47

An hour and 15 mins into a trial shift at a small call centre trying to flog double glazing when I was at uni. We were cold calling from the phone book and had to read the most appalling script so I was just getting hung up on instantly. I was supposed to do the whole 3hrs to get paid and I just couldn't stand it. Tried making up my own script which was better but got a bollocking for it.

bonzaitree · 23/08/2023 19:48

I thought I got my dream job after qualifying. I was so excited. Left after three weeks lol! And 2 of them were over Xmas.

ladygindiva · 23/08/2023 20:00

Day two, slimy boss commented on my arse; when I gave him a disapproving look he said " if you don't want people to comment on your arse don't wear such clingy trousers" ... I fetched my coat and fucked off there and then. I then had a massive snotty teary anxiety attack at home, but he doesn't know that. My exit was slick.

MissKittyFantastico84 · 23/08/2023 20:01

I interviewed at Wagamamas while I was at uni. The manager was so rude and abrupt and made it so so shit. Like, when you're here, you're ON and we expect you to work FAST and you MUST commit to X hours a week and X at weekends or we'll have a problem. At the end of the interview, she asked how much I wanted to work there, and I just told her that I didn't anymore.

Then I got a bar job in a posh part of town. The staff were total posers and I was told I should feel good that I got hired because 'they only hire fit people'. They didn't let me work behind the bar, only serve food, which meant I was often just stood by the side of the bar by the ketchup bottles. I got a job at Oceana after three shifts and didn't even go in to get my last pay packet.

Oceana was the most fun ever!

Spanielsarepainless · 23/08/2023 20:05

Two days. I had worked in a highly specialised retail environment but after a disastrous takeover I ended up in a high street bookshop. They weren't interested in using my specialist skills and I left after day two.

Hadalifeonce · 23/08/2023 20:08

Started a new job this year, sat with the outgoing person, she was lovely, but realised within about 6 hours that the company was not actually very good. So went in the next day to say that I wouldn't be staying.

HorribleNecktie · 23/08/2023 20:08

Mine was half a day in a temp job for a garage when I was about 19. They had a room full of paper files in no order that they wanted to transfer to one of those ancient beige computers with the black screen and green text. They didn’t train me in how the data should be entered so I just guessed. The room smelt like petrol and it was dark and boiling hot.

Worst bit was there was also no desk or proper office chair! The computer was balanced on a plank of 2x4 across a bunch of bricks, about 50cm off the ground. The chair was a metal fold out one which was higher than the desk! After a few hours my back was agony, so I fucked off for lunch and never came back.
