Idiot husband poured fat down the sink

DH accidentally (genuine accident) poured a pan of fat, approximately a litre, down the sink. It was only after he'd poured a significant amount that he realised (it was a dump rather than a slow pour). Is there anything we can do to mitigate it? So far we've poured litre after litre of boiling water down the sink and most of a bottle of fairy liquid. Anything else? He feels so stupid!

Just run the hot tap for a while and it will clear it out?

Blobblobblob · 19/08/2023 20:41

You're probably going to have to take the u bend off and clean it out.

Sorry, no you won't - he will.

Get on YouTube if he's not sure how.

HermioneWeasley · 19/08/2023 20:41

I’d do a few caps of washing soda crystals washed down with a kettle of boiling water each

Ponoka7 · 19/08/2023 20:41

Soda crystals and boiling water. Then a sink unblocked next week.

ThreeLittleDots · 19/08/2023 20:44

What you've done already is fine, don't worry.

Xrays · 19/08/2023 20:46

It might be absolutely fine. I regularly pour the odd bit of fat down the sink. Never had any issues. I Chuck a bit of fairy and hot water down after it and every so often if the plug seems blocked I get some Mr Muscle unblocker and pour that down it. I’ve yet to have to call anyone out to fix it or whatever after about 25 years of doing it.

BMW6 · 19/08/2023 20:47

Soda crystals and run the hot tap for 5 minutes at least.

Screamingabdabz · 19/08/2023 20:49

Another vote for soda crystals then buy one of those sink unplugger chemicals from any supermarket. Leave overnight.

anotheranotheranotheranother · 19/08/2023 20:51

I would just run the hot tap for a while and chuck some fairy liquid in it every now and then

For all those people who put a little bit of oil down the sink https://amp.theguardian.com/environment/2019/oct/29/bus-sized-fatberg-cleared-from-london-sewer

This is partially my concern - it's not something we'd ever normally do. The pan was on the side waiting for the oil to be transferred to a container for disposal.

Thanks for the advice.

You shouldn't pour any fat down the sink.

Well fine at your end but you do realise that your little bits of fat join up with other people's to make gigantic fatbergs that some poor fucker has to chip away at to clear the blockage a long way from your house?

Please don't put ANY fat down your sink. Keep an empty screw top jar next to your sink and pour all fat into it. When full screw on the lid and put into your bin. Wipe whatever has been used for cooking out with kitchen roll before washing.

junebirthdaygirl · 19/08/2023 20:53

Buy Mr Muscle drain blocker next time in supermarket and all will be fine. Handy to keep one at handy for such events.

BaroldandNedmund · 19/08/2023 21:09

I may be wrong about this but oil that’s liquid at room temperature won’t suddenly set and clog the drain. Isn’t it just fats such as lard that are liquid when hot and then set solid at room temperature. Either way it’ll be fine.

WILTYjim · 19/08/2023 21:12

A LITRE!!! Wtf do you cook with a litre of oil that your manchild doesn’t recognise?

Mr Muscle unblocker is FULL OF POISONOUS CHEMICALS wtf!
Hot water and simple detergent will do but I would take the ubend off and clean it as well.

Startyabastard · 19/08/2023 21:20

Yes to soda crystals but try caustic soda also.

LadyMacbethWasMisunderstood · 19/08/2023 21:27

This is all so dispiriting regarding the use of chemicals and the lack of awareness of environmental issues.

CatsOnTheChair · 19/08/2023 21:30

Oil that is liquid at room tempeerature? It's probably gone to stick on some wipes someone else has flushed, and there isn't much else you can do.

Oil that is solid at room temp? Get the u-bend off.

Fats shouldn't go down sinks. You know this. It was a mistake. To those saying you do it: stop it right now.

bellac11 · 19/08/2023 21:31

I thought the odd bit of oil was ok, not hard fats like butter/lard/meat fats though?

Absolutelynotfornow · 19/08/2023 21:35

Your husband is not an idiot..he made a poor judgement! Just pour boiling water and soda down the drain.

Isn't it just. Get it down your sink, no bother to you, but could be someone else's major problem.

So many asshats on here.

HundredMilesAnHour · 19/08/2023 21:37

I live in a gated development and we have 2 sets of neighbours (tenants) who insist on pouring ghee down their sinks on a regular basis. This blocks the drains for the building and we have spent a small fortune paying for the drains to be repeatedly unblocked. This cost gets charged back to all us flat owners in our service charges. The tenants have been told to stop and they're refusing. One actually said "we got into trouble for doing this in our last flat too." 😡🙄 Their landlords are about to get some very big bills if it happens again.

Yep.
