Idiot husband poured fat down the sink

FatBurger · 19/08/2023 20:39

DH accidentally (genuine accident) poured a pan of fat, approximately a litre, down the sink. It was only after he'd poured a significant amount that he realised (it was a dump rather than a slow pour). Is there anything we can do to mitigate it? So far we've poured litre after litre of boiling water down the sink and most of a bottle of fairy liquid. Anything else? He feels so stupid!

It’s oil op it will remain liquid and be fine

Oneweektogo2023 · 19/08/2023 23:47

Dishwasher tablets and biological laundry detergent and bleach.

Dishwasher tablets and biological laundry detergent and bleach.

Bloody hell not together, unless you want op to kill herself, never ever mix bleach with detergents unless you want to poison yourself, it's one thing when it's done in a washing machine, quite another in an open environment ( open drain in this case) where you effectively produce something similar to mustard gas.
a litre of cooking oil won't just disperse on its own just because it's a fluid! Whilst water will be able to pass under the oil, other matter like bits toilet roll will start to cling to it, causing a gradual build up over time.
However the washing up liquid and hot water will probably disperse it sufficiently enough. If you need to use caustic soda, follow the instructions carefully it's highly corrosive, and don't use it with any other chemicals.

vipersnest1 · 20/08/2023 00:10

@FatBurger, 'Oil.

And no, the sink isn't blocked. I'm more worried about the pipes further down the line. Never put any oil or fat down the drain usually!'
So flush down some bio soap powder or liquid. It's all you can do for now.

NewName122 · 20/08/2023 00:12

Done this multiple times, not had an issue in 14+ years.

Bouncyball23 · 20/08/2023 00:15

Xrays · 19/08/2023 20:46

It might be absolutely fine. I regularly pour the odd bit of fat down the sink. Never had any issues. I Chuck a bit of fairy and hot water down after it and every so often if the plug seems blocked I get some Mr Muscle unblocker and pour that down it. I’ve yet to have to call anyone out to fix it or whatever after about 25 years of doing it.

This is the reason sewers are clogged with fat!!! Doesn't effect my sink so not my problem right?
Stop being so bloody lazy and Dispose of fat the correct way!!!

Can you please stop now? Thanks

A LITRE!!! Wtf do you cook with a litre of oil that your manchild doesn’t recognise?

And how could he pour it by mistake??

Come on!

You might not have had an issue, but it’ll be causing issues for others. Inconsiderate and lazy.

We experienced the disgustingness of a backed up drain when moving in as previous occupiers and people further up the street did what you did.

Barfvader · 20/08/2023 06:36

Absolutelynotfornow · 19/08/2023 21:35

Your husband is not an idiot..he made a poor judgement! Just pour boiling water and soda down the drain.

I agree. Op said it was a genuine accident. I'd hate if my husband went on the Internet and called me an idiot for making a mistake (which happens a lot). Anyway, sounds like the situation will be fine. Just keep flushing it out with detergent and water.

TheAOEAztec · 20/08/2023 06:40

He's not a man child.

Tbh that was not an unexpected post conaideting you started post with "idiot".

It will be fine once. Everyone makes mistakes like that. Let it go now

ZeldaWillTellYourFortune · 20/08/2023 01:03

And how could he pour it by mistake??

Come on!

Quite! Why did he not wonder why you would leave a full pan of water on the side? Why once he had poured the first little bit did he not realise it was oil? It may be pale in colour but would have a yellow tinge and a rather viscous quality that water simply doesn’t have!

Daffodilsandtuplips · 20/08/2023 07:42

Soda crystals and boiling water should clear it.

StarlightLady · 20/08/2023 07:49

“If it aint broke don’t fix it!”. I wouldn’t do anything more than you have done, assuming the waste water is still flowing. If it isn’t then as others have said, soda crystals (they can discolour some sinks though) or Drain Unblocker.

Your husband is another matter. He clearly is broke and deserves a severe talking to. Possibly a smacked bottom 😂.

I do exactly the same as this. Never had a issue.

once every other month I buy drain unblocker and use it on my bath for hair and kitchen sink too for anything left in there.

But why do you do this? Have you not heard about fatbergs?

HelpMeGetThrough · 20/08/2023 07:58

It'll be fine, I've done it before and boshed down some seriously hot water behind it.

Never had a problem.

FairylightsandHygge · 20/08/2023 08:25

All the people saying they do this regularly and it's fine are hurting my brain. How are people so ignorant and selfish?

Think about the water which you will eventually drink as tap water. Think about all the creatures in the sea. In my house I try to clean with the minimum amount of chemical and toxic substances for this very reason and there are people blithely pouring whole bottles of toxic poisons down their drains because they're too lazy or ignorant to dispose of fats probably.

In our house we regularly cook chicken in the oven and I pour all the hot liquid into a large Yogurt pot. When it's hot chicken fat is liquid but it congeals to a jelly like substance when it cools. This is then disposed of in the bin. Imagine if that hot liquid was poured down the sink. It would turn into lumps of fat when in the drain and water system once it cooled.

Please, please deal with all fats by disposing in the bin.

The cavalier treatment of the environment is appalling. All of you who think it's no big deal, your children will reap the consequences.

lightinthebox · 21/08/2023 06:52

It’s attitudes like we see here why water companies get away with polluting our water systems to the point they’re unsafe.

Tiespin · 21/08/2023 06:56

When I have a bit of fat left in a pan I put a slice of bread in to soak it up then give it to the birds to eat in th3 garden

Flopsythebunny · 21/08/2023 07:04

Deathbyfluffy · 19/08/2023 23:08

So it’s vegetable oil and not animal fat?
it’ll be fine - it’s a none issue as it’ll remain liquid (as it has in the pan) and not suddenly turn solid in the drain.

It will remain liquid until the temperature drops in winter and it gets mixed in with wet wipes

AccountCreateUsername · 21/08/2023 07:11

FatBurger · 19/08/2023 23:04

He's not a man child. He was loading the dishwasher and mistook the large, cold pan of liquid (a black pan too so no discernable colour to the oil) for water and dumped it out in to the sink (which is large and deep so dumping liquid is our go to).

I cooked onion bhajees on Wednesday, chips Thursday and donuts Friday. None of which DH was present for. I deep fry once a year roughly so a pan of oil is not a regular occurrence in our house!

I know I’m missing the point but bhajees THEN chips THEN donuts 😱 OP do you wash pans before glassware?

EveSix · 21/08/2023 07:28

We should all be very mindful of the amount of detergent and household chemicals we use. 'Household chemicals' make extremely toxic substances sound less dangerous, but they remain profoundly harmful to aquatic life once they enter watercourses, which they inevitably do. Use sparingly, if at all, and ideally, look for natural, non-harmful alternatives.

Please do not, as a PP professes to do, carry out a monthly routine unblocking of all sinks using a chemical. Just clean dregs and hairs manually after each use. Fit one of those little sink-hole-sieves which sits on top of the hole and prevents solids from entering the pipe.

God god it's not all about you. Have you really not seen any articles about fatbergs. The public system is blocked up with massive build up of kitchen fat and wet wipes.
