to not have DD keep ordering McDelivery every day?

Shoebills · 19/08/2023 13:45

DD is 17 and has a job, so it is her money but all she has done this summer hols is order McDonald's to the house. What happened to McDonald's being cheap? Her orders are always £15 odd and she still eats breakfast and dinner with that. I just think it's unhealthy and the biggest waste of money. Would it be unreasonable to say she can't keep ordering it to the house?

There are clearly a lot of parents of non teens who think that it’s possible to ban a 17 year old from having McDonalds.

I agree it’s grossly unhealthy but the truth is that if you ban it from the house she’ll just get it on her way home from work.

Yes I would express an opinion on how much money she’s spending on junk food, but that’s as far as you can go.

The reality is that at 18 she could be going to uni and spending the first year of her uni life living on beer and pot noodle, and everyone would just view that as a right of passage.

Exactly this.

She's 17, she legally has capacity to make decisions about her own health, and she's spending money that she's earned at her job. In addition to that, it's the summer holidays. It sounds like it's all a bit of a novelty and it'll more than likely settle down/stop once school/college starts again in a couple of weeks. In my experience, the more you say about it then the more of a battle you're going to make it and banning it isn't going to stop her from having it.

Just don't do her any tea when she's had a McDonald's and then you're not wasting additional food that she doesn't need.

Cupcakekiller · 19/08/2023 17:46

Does she have a weight problem? If not, I'd leave her to it. DS17 eats a diet composed of 95% crap food but he's a healthy weight, plays football a few times a week so I leave him to it. I remind him about looking after his teeth but he's almost an adult and there's a lot worse he could be doing than eating junk food.

Coyoacan · 19/08/2023 17:43

What the heck is the problem with drugs? It would also be her money, wouldn't it?

Drugs are illegal, burgers aren't.

dottiedodah · 19/08/2023 17:49

I think there are bigger hills to die on TBH. She will probably get sick of them eventually I expect. I would let this go.She is working and paying for it .

GEC44 · 19/08/2023 17:50

McD's is full of salt. To have it EVERY DAY is asking for health problems and weight gain. Not a good habit to have.

I'd be having a serious talk with her about the health risks and also teaching her to make nutritious meals. Easier said than done I know.

Make her watch Supersize Me.

This. I’d be amazed if she still wants MCD every day after watching that.

It’s her money. Let her waste it

I know this approach is meant with the idea of learning the consequences from your own mistakes but my parents were like this and when I got a small inheritance of £1,000 they gave me zero advice on good reasons to save it etc, absolutely nothing. Looking back, honestly, I bloody wish they had. I've never been good with money management and could've done with the guidance

AlfietheSchnauzer · 19/08/2023 18:15

aSofaNearYou · 19/08/2023 14:04

There are no McDonald's meals that cost £15 so if she's only ordering for herself she must be getting loads.

The latest promotional large meal is £9.89 where I live. Add on delivery fees & that cheeky service fee they hide on and you've hit £15 without even so much as a McFlurry added on

panko · 19/08/2023 18:17

That's awful. Is she overweight?

wheresthesungone · 19/08/2023 18:21

At 16 I had to pay rent, I know times have changed but it put me in good stead for adult life.
Maybe it's time to have an intervention and get her to see what money she's wasting vs what she could be doing with that money.

Totally agree. My youngest is 18 - works, drives and owns a car, pays a bit of board (peppercorn rent really just to teach him life isn't free!), works out daily at the gym - and stuffs himself with takeaways (and did so from the age of 17!) He knows they're not good for him so no point me nagging. He once had a delivery from The Little Dessert Shop - probably 2000 calories worth of zero nutrition and I said 'what a waste of money'. He asked if I'd rather he spent it on cocaine!

Similarly, I smothered my kids in Factor 50 when they were little and, even when abroad with us at 16/17 it was a strict rule to slap it on at regular intervals! However, none of them gave a shit once they were old enough to look after their own skin health and nothing I said mattered. As soon as they actually experienced sun burn though they realised I was right! My eldest son took 10 bottles when he went to a Mexico recently and now knows I speak sense!

My older 3 all now eat really well, they run their own homes and barely drink - none of them smoke. They have to realise themselves and they DO if you just back off. Anyone who eats a Maccies daily will eventually get sick of the sluggish feeling, the empty bank account and the thick waistline. Advise them, yes, but don't nag - it'll have the opposite effect.

It's difficult to 'stop' parenting. You have to sit back at some point and watch them make mistakes. You never ever stop sorry worrying about them but as long as you've tried to guide and support them that's all you can possibly do.

Sheepsheepie · 19/08/2023 18:29

It’s her money so it might backfire confronting her. I would ask for a contribution to the house but pop it in a bank account for her instead.

AlfietheSchnauzer · 19/08/2023 18:34

CommonVetch · 19/08/2023 15:10

It's disgusting non-food rubbish and I wouldn't be pleased either. But it is her money, so I'd try to compromise and ask that it isn't sent to the house.

My first job was at McDonald's, and I would recognise people who came in for all 3 meals when my shifts overlapped breakfast/lunch or lunch/dinner in the week. I couldn't understand the appeal even then!

It's disgusting non-food rubbish

It's not the healthiest no, but to say it's not food and/or 'rubbish' is simply wrong. The chicken is all 100% breast from their own poultry on their own farms, the milk & eggs are all organic, the beef is 100% British or Irish from their own cattle, the potatoes are all Maris piper (& one other variety I can't remember the name of!) and having worked there myself, their cleanliness rules are so strict it was frankly, eye opening. Every night the cookers, fryers & all surfaces in the kitchen are quite literally taken apart, scrubbed & sterilised- yes genuinely! Every 10 mins hands are washed no matter what area you're in. The Manager used to say to us that THIS is how the Big Mac always tastes the same no matter where you get it from - good food quality & strict standards.
I learnt so much about food hygiene and quality control from McDonalds. None of which I've ever forgotten - so much so that 23 years later, my mum still laughs at me for how strict I am about food hygiene!

Most of those on here, bashing McDonalds would likely be more than happy to have a Chinese/Indian from the local takeaway yet you've no clue what goes in that shite!

This is all 100% true - the fries are made by McCain at Scarborough!

StarDolphins · 19/08/2023 21:28

It would annoy me & irritate me (£15😱) but other than pass comment that it’s unhealthy & a total waste of money, I wouldn’t ban it. I would feel too controlling.

Very true & it’s far superior to Aldi chicken. That is rubbish.

Talk to her about your concerns.
You can't stop her because it's her money she earnt so...
I agree it's a terrible waste of money..
But when you waste money does someone come and put a stop to it? Of course not if it's your money you earn... I guess you just eventually learn. But you don't learn if you aren't left to make your own choices.

When I was an 18 year old student I got pissed every other day of the week.

I totally agree - it's not healthy and is annoying BUT it's her money and in the grand scheme, there are much bigger things to worry about. Explain to her your view - she can choose to take it, or not.

She will learn eventually/get completely sick of it.

I agree with this.

Because only fat people have disordered eating or are greedy 🙄🙄🙄

Somewhereovertherainbowweighapie · 20/08/2023 00:35

It might just be the novelty of being able to order what she wants. If she keeps spending every penny she earns I would start changing board. Make it 20% of what she earns and save it for her.

thecatinthetwat · 20/08/2023 00:42

I used to get a meal allowance through work, I used it to get a McDonald’s every day. After a couple of months I finally became sick of it. It took a while but she’ll get there too. It seems controlling to stop her because of your own preferences.
