to not have DD keep ordering McDelivery every day?

DD is 17 and has a job, so it is her money but all she has done this summer hols is order McDonald's to the house. What happened to McDonald's being cheap? Her orders are always £15 odd and she still eats breakfast and dinner with that. I just think it's unhealthy and the biggest waste of money. Would it be unreasonable to say she can't keep ordering it to the house?

It's £4 delivery on Uber Eats so a large meal, some cheese bites and delivery would be about that

Yeah, that's what I was qualifying as loads! Especially every day.

The most expensive large meal on the app is just under £10 (most are less so you'd need to add cheese bites to get it up to that) so with £4 delivery, yes that's around £15, but that's a concerning thing to be ordering every single day. A smaller order might be less of a concern.

I think some are over reacting a lot.

Lots of families I know have a weekly takeout, just because it happens to be McDonald's seems to make it an issue.

Lots of 18 year olds go clubbing every week that's probably more harmful plus they'd probably get a kebab or something after.

NeedTheSeaside · 19/08/2023 14:32

I agree it's not the healthiest lunch to be having every day & that it adds up quickly

id definitely talk her her about both the food & the cost over time.

however, she's 17, it's her own money banning her from using her own money to order her own food to her own house seems a pretty direct route to alienating her. Why do you want her to feel like it's YOUR home, not hers?

It's every day, not every week. I'd think nothing of it if it was every week.

squeakyckeanteef · 19/08/2023 14:34

When I first moved out I ordered take aways constantly. There's something fun and novel about it to a teen. I don't anymore, maybe just have a word with her about it and suggest that you do a family take away night once a week rather than her order McDonald's every day and eating by herself.

Weekly McDonald’s is still too much imo. Maybe once a month.

topshotta · 19/08/2023 14:37

It's her money from her job so she can spend her hard earned money on whatever she wants she'll get bored of it eventually anyway

Frankly I'd rather a 17 year old we're spending their money on clubbing rather than daily McDonalds. At least they're out socialising with their mates, rather than sitting home alone shovelling in unhealthy junk food.

Cowlover89 · 19/08/2023 14:47

Could be worse. Could be spending her money on fags or drugs.

Dolores87 · 19/08/2023 14:50

She is 17. Its her money. Id probably try and talk to her about better spending habits and health but I wouldnt ban it.

Ghilli · 19/08/2023 14:51

Does she care about the environment? If she does (or claims to) then that might be an angle to take.

LlynTegid · 19/08/2023 14:52

I am with you OP. I'd not want an overweight unhealthy child or young adult.

rookiemere · 19/08/2023 14:58

The trouble is it becomes ingrained as a habit very quickly.
My mid twenties nephew has a decent job and lives at home with low digs, but because he pays for daily junk food he never has money to do anything exciting like go on holiday and is quite overweight.

What will you do if you end up with one - send it back?

MatildaTheCat · 19/08/2023 15:04

Or crack cocaine or heroin or international drug smuggling. It’s not a race to the bottom.

Daily Macdonalds is hugely unhealthy and will be impacting her health. Agree with making her watch Supersize Me and some info on UPF. Try to get her onboard to thinking about being strong and healthy rather than just guilting her. We’ve all been massively tricked by the food industry.

Missingmyusername · 19/08/2023 15:04

Wsmi · 19/08/2023 14:00

Of all the things to ban your kids from doing, this is what you would pick?

Have you watched Supersize me? Christ yes, would ban my child from eating a McDonald’s every day. £15 worth?! That’s a lot of food.

CommonVetch · 19/08/2023 15:10

It's disgusting non-food rubbish and I wouldn't be pleased either. But it is her money, so I'd try to compromise and ask that it isn't sent to the house.

My first job was at McDonald's, and I would recognise people who came in for all 3 meals when my shifts overlapped breakfast/lunch or lunch/dinner in the week. I couldn't understand the appeal even then!

Notcontent · 19/08/2023 15:14

Leaving aside the waste of money, she is setting herself up for potentially problems with her weight and illness in the future. The problem is that is she is eating like that every day, she is teaching her brain and body to crave that kind of junk and it will just get worse.

I would try to get her to read about UPF.

Lilithlogic · 19/08/2023 15:19

Is she paying rent? If not and you don't need it maybe you could and save it for her. A little less spare cash may cut the McDonald's down.

bryceQ · 19/08/2023 15:20

Also can't imagine the calories daily of £15 worth of macdonalds, must be thousands?

Belladonna56 · 19/08/2023 15:20

For me it is wouldn't be about the money, but I'd be concerned about the health aspects. By eating the junk food she's missing out on fruit and vegetables, unless she's eating a Mumsnet massive salad for lunch.
But in that case she wouldn't be hungry enough for the Mcdelivery. (Great expressions, btw).

SouthLondonMum22 · 19/08/2023 15:22

I think it's fine to have a chat with her about it but ultimately, she's 17 and she should be able to spend her money on what she likes.

I think it's unreasonable to tell her what she can and can't spend her own money on but I get your concern. Not only would I be worried for her health, but I'd also be annoyed that you're subsidising her to waste her money this way. Stop subsidising her. Charge her proper board/rent and see if she still wants to spend nearly £600/month on takeaways!
Tell her you allowed her to stay for free/cheap so she could afford some experiences/learn to drive/holiday/clothes etc whilst young. You're not subsidising her weight gain/laziness/health problems. Time for a board increase.

JudgeRudy · 19/08/2023 15:25

aSofaNearYou · 19/08/2023 14:04

There are no McDonald's meals that cost £15 so if she's only ordering for herself she must be getting loads.

They'll be a charge for delivery though but yes, that's a lot

RunningFromInsanity · 19/08/2023 15:27

If she’s got money to waste on McDs, she probably needs to be upping her rent/bill contribution.
Not many adults can afford McDs every day and pay all living expenses so she’s obviously getting something subsided (phone bill, clothes, food, car etc?)
